حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَعْدًا ؓ، يَقُولُ:
" لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا وَرَقُ الشَّجَرِ، حَتَّى يَضَعَ أَحَدُنَا كَمَا تَضَعُ الشَّاةُ، فَأَصْبَحَتْ بَنُو أَسَدٍ تُعَزِّرُنِي عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، لَقَدْ خَسِرْتُ إِذًا وَضَلَّ سَعْيِي
Translation

✧ We saw ourselves with the Messenger of God ﷺ when we had no food except the leaves of trees, until one of us would defecate as a sheep does. Then the Banū Asad came to chastise me for Islam. I have then surely lost and my effort has gone astray.
