✧ Umar used to ask the Emigrants about this verse: "When the help of Allah and the victory come, and you see the people" ([al-Nasr 110:1–2](https://quran.islamunlocked.com/quran:110:1-2)): "Concerning what was it revealed?" Some of them said, "Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ, when he saw the people entering Islam and becoming firm in the religion, to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness." Umar said, "Should I not make you marvel at Ibn Abbas? O Ibn Abbas, why do you not speak?" He said, "It informed him when he would die." He said, "‘When the help of Allah and the victory come, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds’ ([al-Nasr 110:1–2](https://quran.islamunlocked.com/quran:110:1-2))—that is your sign of death." He said, "You have spoken the truth. By Him in whose hand is my soul, I understood nothing from it except what you understood."

✧ We were all with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not one of us absent. Fatimah came walking, and by Allah her gait was exactly like the gait of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, until she reached him. He said: “Welcome to my daughter.” He seated her on his right or his left, then he whispered something to her and she wept bitterly. Then he whispered something else and she laughed. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up, I said to her: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ singled you out for whispering among us and then you wept. Tell me what he said to you.” She said: “I would not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, I said to her: “I ask you by the right I have over you, what did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whisper to you?” She said: “Now yes. He whispered to me the first time and said: ‘Jibril used to review the Qur'an with me once every year, and he reviewed it with me twice this year. I do not think that the appointed time is far. So fear Allah and be patient.’ So I wept. Then he said to me: ‘O Fatimah, are you not pleased that you are the mistress of the women of this community, or the mistress of the women of the worlds?’ So I laughed.”

Call for me your father and your brother, so that I may write a document for Abu Bakr, for I fear that someone will say something and someone will wish for something, but Allah and the believers will not accept anyone but Abu Bakr.”

A'isha said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said after he entered her house and his pain intensified, 'Pour over me from seven water-skins whose mouths have not been untied, so that I may give my final instructions to the people.' A'isha said: So we seated him in a washtub belonging to Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and then we began to pour water on him from those water-skins until he gestured to us with his hand, 'You have done it.' ✧ Regarding the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: The Prophet ﷺ became heavy and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Put water for me in the washtub.' We did, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ghusl. Then he tried to get up but fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said, 'Have the people prayed?' We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Put water for me in the washtub.' She said: The people were gathered in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the Isha prayer. She said: So he sent a messenger to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr said, and he was a tender-hearted man, 'O Umar, lead the people in prayer.' Umar said to him, 'You are more entitled to that.' She said: So Abu Bakr led the people in prayer during those days.

He came while Abu Bakr was praying, and sat beside him. Abu Bakr began to move back, but he held him until he finished the prayer. When the Prophet ﷺ died, Umar said: “No one should speak of his death, or I will strike him with this sword of mine.” So they kept silent. They were an unlettered people, with no prophet among them before him. They said: “O Salim, go to the companion of the Prophet ﷺ and call him.” So I went out and found Abu Bakr standing in the mosque. Abu Bakr said: “Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died?” I said: “Umar says: No one should speak of his death, or I will strike him with this sword of mine.” He placed his hand on my arms, then walked until he entered. They made way for him until he reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he leaned over him until his face almost touched the face of the Prophet ﷺ, until it became clear to him that he had died. Then Abu Bakr said: {Indeed, you are to die, and indeed they are to die} [Az-Zumar: 30]. They said: “O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died?” He said: “Yes.” They realized that it was as he said. They said: “O companion of the Prophet ﷺ, shall we pray over the Prophet ﷺ?” He said: “Yes.” They said: “How should prayer be performed over him?” He said: “A group enters, says takbir, supplicates, then leaves, and others come.” They said: “O companion of the Prophet ﷺ, shall the Prophet ﷺ be buried?” He said: “Yes.” They said: “Where should he be buried?” He said: “In the place where Allah took his soul, for He did not take his soul except in a good place.” They realized that it was as he said. Then Abu Bakr said: “Your companion is with you.” Abu Bakr left, and the Muhajirun gathered and consulted among themselves. Then they said: “Let us go to our brothers from the Ansar, for they have a share in this matter.” They went to the Ansar, and the Ansar said: “From us an amir, and from you an amir.” Umar said: “Two swords in one sheath cannot work.” Then he took Abu Bakr’s hand and said: “Who has these three? {When he said to his companion} [At-Tawbah: 40], who is his companion? {When they were in the cave} [At-Tawbah: 40], who were the two? {Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us} [At-Tawbah: 40], with whom?” Then he pledged allegiance to him, and said: “Give allegiance.” And the people gave the best and most beautiful allegiance.
