44. Dream Interpretation

  1. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8174Sahih

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ who said: "In the latter times, the dream of the believer will hardly be false. The most truthful of them in dreams are the most truthful of them in speech. Dreams are of three kinds: a good dream is glad tidings from Allah, Exalted is He; a dream that a man talks to himself; and a dream causing grief from Satan. So if any of you sees a dream that he dislikes, he should not tell anyone about it, but he should get up and pray. The dream of the believer is one of forty-six parts of prophethood." Abu Hurayrah said, "The fetter pleases me and I dislike the shackle; the fetter is steadfastness in religion."

  2. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8175Sahih

✧ "The dream of the believer is one of forty-six parts of prophethood, and it is on the wing of a bird as long as it is not related. When it is related, it occurs."

  3. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8176Sahih

✧ When he finished the morning prayer, he would say, "Has any of you seen a dream tonight? Indeed, nothing of prophethood will remain after me except the true dream."

  4. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8177Sahih

✧ "Indeed, the dream occurs according to how it is interpreted. The example of that is like a man who raises his foot and waits until he puts it down. So if any of you sees a dream, he should not tell it except to a sincere advisor or a scholar."

  5. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8178Sahih

✧ "Indeed, messengerhood and prophethood have ceased, so there is no messenger after me and no prophet." He said, "That distressed the people." So he said, "But there are the glad tidings." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the glad tidings?" He said, "The dream of a Muslim man, which is one of the parts of prophethood."

  6. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8179Sahih

✧ I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about His saying, Exalted is He: {For them are good tidings in the worldly life} [Yunus 64]. He said, "It is the righteous dream that the believer sees or is seen for him."

✧ "When one of you sees a dream he likes, it is from Allah, the Exalted. Let him praise Allah for it and tell what he saw. When he sees other than that, something he dislikes, it is from Satan. Let him seek refuge in Allah from its evil and not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him."

He said, 'Listen, may your ear hear, and understand, may your heart understand. Your example and the example of your community is like a king who took a house, then built a room in it, then placed a feast in it, then sent a messenger to invite people to his food. Some answered the messenger and some left him. Allah is the king, the house is Islam, the room is Paradise, and you, O Muhammad, are a messenger. Whoever answers you enters Paradise and eats from it.'"

  16. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8189Sahih

Then I saw dislike in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

✧ I was sitting in the mosque when a man entered and they said, "This is a man from the people of Paradise." So, he prayed and then left. I followed him and said, "Indeed, the people said this and that about you." He said, "It is not appropriate for anyone to lie or speak about something he does not know. And I will tell you why. I had a dream and I narrated it to the Prophet ﷺ. I saw as if I was in a green garden, and he mentioned its vastness and greenery. In the middle of the garden, there was an iron pillar. Then, a man came to me and said, 'Climb.' I said, 'I'm not able to climb.' He brought a podium from behind me and said, 'Climb.' I said, 'I'm not able to climb.' So, he helped me climb along with my clothes. When I reached the top of the pillar, there was a handle, and I inserted my hand into it. It felt like I became the owner of the ring, and indeed, the ring was in my hand. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'As for the garden, it is the garden of Islam, and as for the pillar, it is the pillar of Islam, and as for the handle, you have held onto the firmest handle of Islam until you die.'"

✧ Shayban the Jew came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Muhammad, do you know the stars that Yusuf saw prostrating to him?” The Prophet ﷺ remained silent until Jibril ﷺ came to him and informed him of what the Jew had asked. Then the Prophet ﷺ met the Jew and said, “O Jew, will you swear by Allah to me that if I tell you, you will become Muslim?” He said, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The stars are Hadathan, al-Tariq, al-Dhabbal, Qabis, al-ʿUdan, al-Faliq, al-Nush, al-Qaruh, Dhu al-Kanafan, Dhu al-Faraʿ, and al-Waththab. Yusuf saw them surrounding the regions of the sky, prostrating to him. He related it to his father, and his father said to him: ‘This is a matter that will be dispersed, but Allah will gather it, if He wills, later.’”

The one who does not wake before reaching the Throne—that is the dream that comes true. And the one who wakes before reaching the Throne—that is the dream that is false.’” A rejected hadith.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, “Has any of you seen a dream?” He said, “Then whoever wished would relate it to him. One morning he said: ‘Last night two angels came to me. One of them sat at my head and the other at my feet. The one at my feet said to the one at my head: Give the example of this man and his community. He said: His example and that of his community is like a people traveling who reached the edge of a vast desert, but they did not have enough provisions to cross the desert or to return. While they were in that state, a man came to them with combed hair, wearing a striped cloak, and said: What do you think? If I bring you to lush meadows and abundant watering places, will you follow me? They said: Yes. So he set off with them and brought them to lush meadows and abundant watering places. They ate, drank, and grew fat. Then he said to them: Did I not find you in that condition and say to you: If I bring you to lush meadows and abundant watering places, will you follow me? They said: Yes. He said: Ahead of you are meadows lusher than these and watering places more abundant than these, so follow me. One group said: By Allah, he has spoken the truth; we will surely follow. Another group said: We are content with this; we will stay here.’”
