✧ Now then, the world has announced its departure and turned away, and nothing remains of it except the dregs like the dregs of a vessel that its owner pours out. And you will move from it to an abode that has no end, so move with the best of what you have. For it has been mentioned to us that a stone is thrown from the edge of Hell and falls in it for seventy years without reaching its bottom. By Allah, it will surely be filled. Are you amazed? And it has been mentioned to us that the distance between two of the gates of Paradise is a journey of forty years, and a day will surely come upon it when it is crowded with throngs. I have seen myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we had no food except tree leaves until the corners of our mouths became sore. I picked up a striped cloak and split it between myself and Sa'd b. Malik; I used half of it as a waist-wrapper and he used half as a waist-wrapper. Today none of us remains alive except that he has become a ruler over one of the cities. I seek refuge in Allah from being great in my own eyes and small in the sight of Allah. No prophethood has ever existed except that it eventually turned into kingship. You will surely be tested, or you will surely experience the rulers after me.

✧ Abu Hurayrah used to say: "By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, I used to press my liver against the ground from hunger, and I used to tie a stone on my belly from hunger. One day I sat on their path from which they came out. Abu Bakr passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. I only asked him so that he would satisfy me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then ʿUmar passed by me, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. I only asked him so that he would satisfy me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Abu al-Qasim ﷺ passed by me and smiled when he saw me. He knew what was in my soul and what was on my face. Then he said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Follow.' And he went on, so I followed him. He entered and asked permission, so he permitted me, and I entered. He found milk in a bowl and said, 'From where is this milk?' They said, 'So-and-so or so-and-so gave it to you as a gift.' He said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Go to the people of the Suffah and call them for me.'" He said: "The people of the Suffah were the guests of Islam: they had no family, no wealth, and no one to depend on. When charity came to him, he would send it to them and not take anything from it. When a gift came to him, he would send for them and take some of it and share it with them. That saddened me, and I said, 'What is this milk to the people of the Suffah? I am more entitled to get a drink from this milk to strengthen myself with it. When they come, he will order me, and I will be the one to give it to them. What can reach me of this milk?' There was no escape from obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ [391]. I went to them and called them, and they came and asked permission, and he permitted them. They took their seats in the house. He said, 'O Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Take it and give it to them.' He said: 'I took the bowl and began giving it to a man, and he would drink until he was satisfied, then return the bowl to me. I would give it to another man, and he would drink until he was satisfied, then return the bowl to me, until I reached the Prophet ﷺ, and all the people had been satisfied. He took the bowl and placed it on his hand, looked at me, and smiled. He said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'It remains for me and you.' I said, 'You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Sit and drink.' So I sat and drank. He said, 'Drink.' So I drank. He kept saying, 'Drink,' until I said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I find no passage for it.' He said, 'Show me.' So I gave him the bowl. He praised Allah, mentioned Allah's name, and drank the remainder."

✧ He entered Madinah and found a man with people gathered around him. He said: Who is this? They said: Abu Hurayrah. I drew near to him until I sat in front of him while he was speaking to the people. When he became silent and was alone, I said to him: I ask you by a right and by a right that you narrate to me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, which you understood and knew. Abu Hurayrah said: I will do so; I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me, which I understood and knew. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed once, and we remained a little while. Then he recovered and said: I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me in this house, with no one else present except me and him. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed violently, then recovered and wiped his face and said: I will do so; I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me while I and he were in this house, with no one else present except me and him. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed violently, then fell forward on his face, and I supported him for a long time. Then he recovered and said: The Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me that God, Blessed and Exalted, on the Day of Resurrection will descend to His servants to judge between them, while every nation is kneeling [396]. The first one He will call is a man who collected the Quran, a man who was killed in the cause of God, and a man of great wealth. God will say to the reciter: Did I not teach you what I revealed to My Messenger? He will say: Yes, O Lord. He will say: Then what did you do with what you knew? He will say: I used to stand with it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day. God will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is a reciter, and that was said. Then the wealthy man will be brought, and God will say to him: Did I not grant you abundance until I left you in need of no one? He will say: Yes, O Lord. He will say: Then what did you do with what I gave you? He will say: I used to maintain family ties and give charity. God will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God, Exalted, will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is generous, and that was said. Then the one killed in the cause of God will be brought, and God will say to him: In what were you killed? He will say: I was commanded to fight in Your cause, so I fought until I was killed. God, Exalted, will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is brave, and that was said. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ struck my knee and said: “O Abu Hurayrah, those three are the first of God's creation with whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Walid Abu Uthman said: Uqbah b. Muslim informed me that Shufayy is the one who entered upon Muawiyah and told him this. Abu Uthman said: Al-Ala b. Abi Hakim narrated to me that he was a swordsman for Muawiyah, and a man entered upon him and told him this from Abu Hurayrah. Muawiyah said: If this is done to those, then what about the rest of the people? Then Muawiyah wept bitterly until we thought he would perish, and we said: This man has brought us evil. Then Muawiyah recovered, wiped his face, and said: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth: {Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornment, We will repay them fully for their deeds therein, and they will not be deprived therein. Those are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire; and vain is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do} [Hud 16].

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “A man who had never done any good said: When I die, burn me and scatter half of me on land and half in the sea. By God, if God gets hold of me, He will punish me with a punishment with which He has never punished anyone in the worlds. So God commanded the sea, and it gathered what was in it, and commanded the land, and it gathered what was in it. Then He said: Why did you do that? He said: Out of fear of You, and You know best. So He forgave him.”

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “Three men went out walking, and rain overtook them. They entered a cave in a mountain, and a rock rolled down and blocked them. He said: They said to each other: Call upon God by the best deed you have done. One of them said: O God, I had elderly parents, and I would go out and graze, then return and milk, then bring the milk to my parents, and they would drink. Then I would give drink to the children, my family, and my wife. One night I was delayed, and when I came, they were asleep. I disliked waking them, while the children were crying at my feet. That remained my habit and theirs until dawn broke. O God, if You know that I did that seeking Your face, then make an opening for us through which we can see the sky. He said: So it was opened for them [398]. The second said: O God, if You know that I loved a woman from my cousins as intensely as a man loves women, and she said: You will not get that from her until you give her a hundred dinars. I worked to obtain it until I gathered it. When I sat between her legs, she said: Fear God and do not break the seal except by its right. So I got up and left her. If You know that I did that seeking Your face, then make an opening for us. He said: So two-thirds of it was opened for them. The third said: O God, if You know that I hired a worker for a measure of corn, and I gave him his wages, but he refused to take it. I took that measure, sowed it, and from it I bought cattle and their herder. Then he came and said: O servant of God, give me my right. I said: Go to those cattle and their herder, for they are yours. He said: Are you mocking me? I said: I am not mocking you; they are yours. O God, if You know that I did that seeking Your face, then make an opening for us. So it was fully opened for them.”

They will be given to drink from the extract of the people of the Fire, the pus of the people of Hell.”
