✧ He entered Madinah and found a man with people gathered around him. He said: Who is this? They said: Abu Hurayrah. I drew near to him until I sat in front of him while he was speaking to the people. When he became silent and was alone, I said to him: I ask you by a right and by a right that you narrate to me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, which you understood and knew. Abu Hurayrah said: I will do so; I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me, which I understood and knew. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed once, and we remained a little while. Then he recovered and said: I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me in this house, with no one else present except me and him. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed violently, then recovered and wiped his face and said: I will do so; I will narrate to you a hadith the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me while I and he were in this house, with no one else present except me and him. Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed violently, then fell forward on his face, and I supported him for a long time. Then he recovered and said: The Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me that God, Blessed and Exalted, on the Day of Resurrection will descend to His servants to judge between them, while every nation is kneeling [396]. The first one He will call is a man who collected the Quran, a man who was killed in the cause of God, and a man of great wealth. God will say to the reciter: Did I not teach you what I revealed to My Messenger? He will say: Yes, O Lord. He will say: Then what did you do with what you knew? He will say: I used to stand with it during the hours of the night and the hours of the day. God will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is a reciter, and that was said. Then the wealthy man will be brought, and God will say to him: Did I not grant you abundance until I left you in need of no one? He will say: Yes, O Lord. He will say: Then what did you do with what I gave you? He will say: I used to maintain family ties and give charity. God will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God, Exalted, will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is generous, and that was said. Then the one killed in the cause of God will be brought, and God will say to him: In what were you killed? He will say: I was commanded to fight in Your cause, so I fought until I was killed. God, Exalted, will say to him: You have lied. The angels will say to him: You have lied. God will say: Rather, you wanted it to be said that so-and-so is brave, and that was said. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ struck my knee and said: “O Abu Hurayrah, those three are the first of God's creation with whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection.” Al-Walid Abu Uthman said: Uqbah b. Muslim informed me that Shufayy is the one who entered upon Muawiyah and told him this. Abu Uthman said: Al-Ala b. Abi Hakim narrated to me that he was a swordsman for Muawiyah, and a man entered upon him and told him this from Abu Hurayrah. Muawiyah said: If this is done to those, then what about the rest of the people? Then Muawiyah wept bitterly until we thought he would perish, and we said: This man has brought us evil. Then Muawiyah recovered, wiped his face, and said: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth: {Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornment, We will repay them fully for their deeds therein, and they will not be deprived therein. Those are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire; and vain is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do} [Hud 16].
