✧ Abu Hurayrah used to say: "By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, I used to press my liver against the ground from hunger, and I used to tie a stone on my belly from hunger. One day I sat on their path from which they came out. Abu Bakr passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. I only asked him so that he would satisfy me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then ʿUmar passed by me, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. I only asked him so that he would satisfy me, but he passed by and did not do so. Then Abu al-Qasim ﷺ passed by me and smiled when he saw me. He knew what was in my soul and what was on my face. Then he said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Follow.' And he went on, so I followed him. He entered and asked permission, so he permitted me, and I entered. He found milk in a bowl and said, 'From where is this milk?' They said, 'So-and-so or so-and-so gave it to you as a gift.' He said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Go to the people of the Suffah and call them for me.'" He said: "The people of the Suffah were the guests of Islam: they had no family, no wealth, and no one to depend on. When charity came to him, he would send it to them and not take anything from it. When a gift came to him, he would send for them and take some of it and share it with them. That saddened me, and I said, 'What is this milk to the people of the Suffah? I am more entitled to get a drink from this milk to strengthen myself with it. When they come, he will order me, and I will be the one to give it to them. What can reach me of this milk?' There was no escape from obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ [391]. I went to them and called them, and they came and asked permission, and he permitted them. They took their seats in the house. He said, 'O Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Take it and give it to them.' He said: 'I took the bowl and began giving it to a man, and he would drink until he was satisfied, then return the bowl to me. I would give it to another man, and he would drink until he was satisfied, then return the bowl to me, until I reached the Prophet ﷺ, and all the people had been satisfied. He took the bowl and placed it on his hand, looked at me, and smiled. He said, 'Abu Hirr.' I said, 'At your service, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'It remains for me and you.' I said, 'You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Sit and drink.' So I sat and drank. He said, 'Drink.' So I drank. He kept saying, 'Drink,' until I said, 'No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I find no passage for it.' He said, 'Show me.' So I gave him the bowl. He praised Allah, mentioned Allah's name, and drank the remainder."
