    أَخَذْتُ قَوْسِي فَاصْطَدَمْتُ طُيُورًا، فَفِيهَا مَا أَدْرَكْتُ ذَكَاتَهُ، وَفِيهَا مَا لَمْ أُدْرِكْ، فَلَقِيتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ، وَزَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ، وَحُذَيْفَةَ بْنَ الْيَمَانِ ؓ، وَجَعَلْتُ أَعْزِلُ الذَّكِيَّ، فَقَالُوا: مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا مَا أَدْرَكْتُ ذَكَاتَهُ، وَهَذَا مَا لَمْ أُدْرِكْهُ، فَخَلَطُوهُ جَمِيعًا، وَقَالُوا: سَمِعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: كُلْ مَا رَدَّتْ عَلَيْكَ قَوْسُكَ

    ✧ I took my bow and hunted birds; some I caught while still alive and some I did not. I met Ibn Masʿūd, Zayd b. Thābit, and Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān ؓ, and I began separating the properly slaughtered ones. They said: 'What is this?' I said: 'These are those I caught alive, and these are those I did not.' They mixed them all together and said: 'We heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Eat whatever your bow returns to you.'

    ✧ When a man sends his hunting animal and then mentions the name of Allah Almighty, let him eat [the game] as long as it has not eaten [from it].

    ✧ I asked ʿAṭāʾ about the miʿrāḍ that strikes with its broad side. He said: If you strike with its broad side, then whatever it hits, eat it.

    نَصَبْتُ حَبَائِلَ لِي بِالْأَبْوَاءِ، فَوَقَعَ فِي حَبْلٍ مِنْهَا طَيْرٌ فَأَفْلَتَ فَخَرَجْتُ فِي إِثْرِهِ، فَوَجَدْتُ رَجُلًا قَدْ أَخَذَهُ، فَتَنَازَعْنَا فِيهِ، فَتَسَاوَقْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ قَائِلًا بِالْأَبْوَاءِ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ مُسْتَظِلٌّ بِنِطَعٍ فَاخْتَصَمْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقَضَى بِهِ بَيْنَنَا شَطْرَيْنِ

    ✧ I set up snares at al-Abwāʾ, and a bird fell into one of the snares but escaped, so I went out after it and found a man who had taken it. We disputed over it and raced together to the Messenger of God ﷺ. We found him taking a midday nap at al-Abwāʾ under a tree, shading himself with a leather mat. We brought our dispute to him, and he divided it between us into two halves.

    كُلُّ شَيْءٍ فِي الْبَحْرِ مَذْبُوحٌ. قَالَ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعَطَاءٍ فَقَالَ: أَمَّا الطَّيْرُ فَأَرَى أَنْ تَذْبَحَهُ.

    ✧ Everything in the sea is slaughtered. He said: I mentioned that to ʿAṭāʾ, who said: As for birds, I think you should slaughter them.

    ✧ Every creature in the sea has been slaughtered by God, Exalted is He, for you, so eat it.

    ✧ Every creature among the creatures of the sea and the land that does not have blood that flows does not require ritual slaughter.

    إِنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ دَخَلَ عَلَى أُمِّ هَانِي ؓ نِصْفَ النَّهَارِ فَقَالَتْ: قَدِّمِي إِلَى أَبِي الْحَسَنِ طَعَامًا، قَالَتْ: فَقَدَّمْتُ مَا كَانَ فِي الْبَيْتِ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ: مَا لِي لَا أَرَى عِنْدَكُمْ بَرَكَةً ؟ فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ هَانِي ؓ: أَلَيْسَ هَذَا بَرَكَةً ! قَالَ ؓ: لَيْسَ أَعْنِي هَذَا، أَمَا لَكُمْ شَاةٌ ؟ قُلْتُ: لَا وَاللهِ مَا لَنَا شَاةٌ

    ✧ ʿAlī ؓ entered upon Umm Hāniʾ ؓ at midday and she said: Present some food to Abū al-Ḥasan. She said: So I presented what was in the house. ʿAlī ؓ said: Why do I not see any blessing with you? Umm Hāniʾ ؓ said: Is this not a blessing? He said: I do not mean this. Do you not have a sheep? I said: No, by God, we do not have a sheep.

    غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةً نَفَذَتْ فِيهَا أَزْوَادُنَا، فَلَمْ يَكُنْ طَعَامٌ نَأْكُلُ إِلَّا الْجَرَادَ حَتَّى قَفَلْنَا مِنْ غَزْوِنَا

    ✧ We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of God ﷺ in which our provisions ran out, and there was no food for us to eat except locusts until we returned from our expedition.

    أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ نَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْجَرَادِ - وَكَانَ نَائِمًا - فَقَالَ أَهْلُهُ: يَرَانَا نَأْكُلُهُ وَلَا يَأْكُلُهُ وَلَا يَنْهَانَا

    ✧ We sent to Abū Hurayrah ؓ to ask him about locusts—he was sleeping—and his family said: He sees us eating them, and he neither eats them nor forbids us.

    كَانَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ ؓ يَرَانَا نَأْكُلُ الْجَرَادَ فَلَا يَأْمُرُنَا وَلَا يَنْهَانَا، وَلَا نَدْرِي مَا كَانَ يَمْنَعُهُ ؟ تَقَذُّرًا أَوْ يَكْرَهُ

    ✧ Abu Sa'id ؓ would see us eating locusts and would not command us or forbid us, and we did not know what prevented him - out of disgust or dislike.

    ✧ I saw 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ smacking his lips. I said, 'What is the matter with you, O Commander of the Believers?' He said, 'I crave fried locusts.'

    قَلَّ الْجَرَادُ فِي سَنَةٍ مِنْ سِنِي عُمَرَ ؓ الَّتِي وَلِيَ فِيهَا فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَلَمْ يُخْبَرْ بِشَيْءٍ فَاغْتَمَّ لِذَلِكَ، فَأَرْسَلَ رَاكِبًا إِلَى الْيَمَنِ، وَرَاكِبًا إِلَى الشَّامِ، وَرَاكِبًا إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ، فَسَأَلَ: هَلْ رُوِيَ مِنَ الْجَرَادِ شَيْءٌ أَمْ لَا ؟ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّاكِبُ الَّذِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْيَمَنِ بِقَبْضَةٍ مِنْ جَرَادٍ فَأَلْقَاهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهَا كَبَّرَ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: خَلَقَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَلْفَ أُمَّةٍ، مِنْهَا سِتُّمِائَةٍ فِي الْبَحْرِ، وَأَرْبَعُ مِائَةٍ فِي الْبَرِّ، فَأَوَّلُ شَيْءٍ يَهْلَكُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ الْجَرَادُ، فَإِذَا هَلَكَتْ تَتَابَعَتْ مِثْلَ النِّظَامِ إِذَا انْقَطَعَ سِلْكُهُ

    ✧ Locusts became scarce in one of the years in which 'Umar ؓ governed. He asked about them and was not informed of anything, so he grieved over that. He sent a rider to Yemen, a rider to Syria, and a rider to Iraq, asking whether any locusts had been seen or not. The rider from Yemen came to him with a handful of locusts and threw them before him. When he saw them, he said 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created a thousand nations, six hundred of them in the sea and four hundred on land. The first thing to perish from these nations is the locust. When they perish, the rest will follow in succession like a string of beads when its thread is cut.'

    تَوَحَّشَتْ بَقَرَةٌ لَنَا، فَخَرَجَ رَجُلٌ فَضَرَبَهَا أَسْفَلَ مِنَ الْعُنُقِ وَفَوْقَ مَرْجِعِ الْكَتِفِ، فَرَكِبَتْ رَدْعَهَا، فَسُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: الْبَقَرَةُ الْإِنْسِيَّةُ إِذَا نَزَلَتْ مَنْزِلَةَ الْوَحْشِيَّةِ يُحِلُّهَا مَا يُحِلُّ الْوَحْشِيَّةَ

    ✧ A cow of ours became wild. A man went out and struck it below the neck and above the shoulder blade. It fell down dead. The Prophet ﷺ was asked, and he said: 'A domesticated cow, when it becomes like a wild animal, is made lawful by what makes a wild animal lawful.'

    ابْتَعْنَا بَقَرَةً فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِنَشْتَرِكَ عَلَيْهَا، فَانْفَلَتَتْ مِنَّا فَامْتَنَعَتْ عَلَيْنَا، فَتَعَرَّضَ لَهَا مَوْلًى لَنَا يُقَالُ لَهُ: [ ذَكْوَانُ ] بِسَيْفٍ فِي يَدِهِ وَهِيَ تَجُولُ بِالصِّمَادِ، فَصَبَا إِلَى تَلٍّ فَلَمَّا مَرَّتْ بِهِ ضَرَبَهَا بِالسَّيْفِ فِي أَصْلِ عُنُقِهَا أَوْ عَلَى عَاتِقِهَا فَخَرَقَهَا بِالسَّيْفِ وَوَقَعَتْ فَلَمْ نُدْرِكْ ذَكَاتَهَا فَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ الْجِذْعِ فَلَقِيَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَذَكَرْنَا لَهُ شَأْنَهَا، فَقَالَ: كُلُوا، إِذَا فَاتَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْبَهَائِمِ شَيْءٌ فَاحْبِسُوهُ بِمَا تَحْبِسُونَ بِهِ الْوَحْشَ

    ✧ We bought a cow during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to share in its meat. It broke loose from us and became difficult to control. A freed slave of ours called Dhakwan confronted it with a sword in his hand while it was running about on the hard ground. It headed toward a hill, and when it passed by him, he struck it with the sword at the base of its neck or on its shoulder, piercing it with the sword, and it fell. We did not manage to slaughter it properly. I went out with 'Abd Allah b. Thabit b. al-Jidh' and we met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We mentioned its situation to him, and he said: 'Eat it. If any of these animals escapes you, restrain it with what you restrain a wild animal.'

    كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ لَا تَزَالُ تَرَى جِنَّانًا فِي بَيْتِهَا فَأَمَرَتْ بِهِ فَقُتِلَ، فَأُتِيَتْ فِي النَّوْمِ فَقِيلَ لَهَا: لِمَ قَتَلْتِ عَبْدَ اللهِ الْمُسْلِمَ ؟ فَقَالَتْ: لَوْ كَانَ مُسْلِمًا مَا اطَّلَعَ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِغَيْرِ إِذَنٍ، فَقِيلَ لَهَا: أَمَا إِنَّكِ قَدْ عَلِمْتِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يَطَّلِعُ إِلَّا حِينَ تَجْمَعِينَ عَلَيْكِ ثِيَابَكِ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَتْ تَصَدَّقَتْ بِاثْنَيْ عَشَرَ أَلْفًا

    ✧ 'A'ishah ؓ kept seeing a snake in her house, so she ordered it to be killed. She was approached in a dream and told: 'Why did you kill 'Abd Allah the Muslim?' She said: 'If he had been a Muslim, he would not have looked upon the wives of the Prophet ﷺ without permission.' It was said to her: 'But you knew that he would only look when you had gathered your clothes around you.' When morning came, she gave twelve thousand (dirhams) in charity.

    إِنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ قَتْلِ الْحَيَّاتِ فَقَالَ: خُلِقَ الْإِنْسَانُ وَالْحَيَّةُ سَوَاءً إِنْ رَآهَا أَفْزَعَتْهُ، وَإِنْ لَدَغَتْهُ أَوْجَعَتْهُ، فَاقْتُلُوهَا حَيْثُ وَجَدْتُمُوهَا

    ✧ A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about killing snakes. He said: 'Man and snake were created alike. If he sees it, it frightens him; if it bites him, it hurts him. So kill it wherever you find it.'

    الْحَيَّةُ أَفْسَقُ الْفَسَقَةِ، فَاقْتُلُوهَا

    ✧ The snake is the most wicked of the wicked, so kill it.

    قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الْأَسَدَ فَكَبِّرْ ثَلَاثًا تَقُولُ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، أَعَزُّ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَأَكْبَرُ، وَأَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَخَافُ وَأَحْذَرُ. تُكْفَى شَرَّهُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى. وَإِذَا هَرَّ عَلَيْهِ الْكَلْبُ فَقُلْ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالإِنْسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ...

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'When you see a lion, say Allahu Akbar three times, saying: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, mightier than everything and greater. I seek refuge with Allah from the evil of what I fear and am wary of. You will be protected from its evil, if Allah Almighty wills. And if a dog barks at you, say: O assembly of jinn and mankind, if you are able...'

    لَا تَطْرُقُوا الطَّيْرَ فِي أَوْكَارِهَا فَإِنَّ اللَّيْلَ أَمَانٌ لَهَا

    ✧ Do not disturb birds in their nests at night, for the night is a protection for them.
