✧ Locusts became scarce in one of the years in which 'Umar ؓ governed. He asked about them and was not informed of anything, so he grieved over that. He sent a rider to Yemen, a rider to Syria, and a rider to Iraq, asking whether any locusts had been seen or not. The rider from Yemen came to him with a handful of locusts and threw them before him. When he saw them, he said 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created a thousand nations, six hundred of them in the sea and four hundred on land. The first thing to perish from these nations is the locust. When they perish, the rest will follow in succession like a string of beads when its thread is cut.'
