✧ The expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq [its time]: Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed in al-Madinah for part of Jumādā al-Ākhirah and Rajab, then he raided Banū al-Muṣṭaliq of Khuzāʿah, in Shaʿbān of the year six. [The appointment of Abū Dharr over al-Madinah] Ibn Hishām said: He appointed Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī over al-Madinah; and it is also said: Numaylah b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Laythī.

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, ʿAbdallāh b. Abī Bakr, and Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥibbān, each having related to me part of the story of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, said: The Messenger of God ﷺ learned that Banū al-Muṣṭaliq were gathering against him, their leader being al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār, the father of Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith, wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When the Messenger of God ﷺ heard of them, he went out against them until he met them at a watering-place of theirs called al-Muraysīʿ, on the side toward Qudayd and the coast. The people advanced against one another and fought, and God defeated Banū al-Muṣṭaliq. Some of them were killed, and the Messenger of God ﷺ gave their children, women, and property as spoils, and he granted them to him.

Ṣubābah, was struck by a man from the Anṣār, of the clan of ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit, who thought he was one of the enemy, and killed him inadvertently.

✧ [Jahjāh and Sinān and what happened with Ibn Ubayy in the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq] While the Messenger of God ﷺ was at that water, the people’s watering parties came down. With ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was a hired man of his from Banū Ghifār called Jahjāh b. Masʿūd, leading his horse. Jahjāh and Sinān b. Wabar al-Juhanī, an ally of Banū ʿAwf b. al-Khazraj, crowded each other at the water and fought. The Juhanī cried out, “O company of the Anṣār!” and Jahjāh cried out, “O company of the Muhājirūn!” ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl became angry, and with him was a group of his people, among them Zayd b. Arqam, a young lad. He said, “Have they really done it? They have challenged us and outnumbered us in our own land. By God, we and the rabble of Quraysh are only as the first one said: ‘Fatten your dog and it will eat you.’ By God, if we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely expel the meaner from it.” Then he turned to those of his people who were present and said to them, “This is what you have done to yourselves. You have let them settle in your land and shared your wealth with them. By God, if you withheld from them what is in your hands, they would move to other than your abode.” Zayd b. Arqam heard that and went with it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, at the time when the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished with his enemy, and told him the news. With him was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who said, “Order ʿAbbād b. Bishr to kill him.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, “How would it be, ʿUmar, if people talked that Muḥammad kills his companions? No, but give the call to depart.” That was at an hour when the Messenger of God ﷺ did not usually set out, and the people departed.

✧ [Ibn Ubayy's apology to the Messenger during the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq] ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl went to the Messenger of God ﷺ when he learned that Zayd b. Arqam had informed him of what he had heard from him. He swore by God: "I did not say what he said, nor did I speak it." He was a noble and great man among his people. Those of the Anṣār among the companions who were present with the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "O Messenger of God, perhaps the boy imagined in his account and did not remember what the man said," out of affection for Ibn Ubayy b. Salūl and in his defense.

✧ [THE MESSENGER, USAYD AND THE STATEMENT OF IBN UBAYY in the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq] Ibn Ishaq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ arose and departed, Usayd b. Hudayr met him and greeted him with the greeting of prophethood and gave him salutation, then said: O Prophet of God, by God, you have set forth at a detested hour, the like of which you have not set forth before. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: Has not the saying of your companion reached you? He said: Which companion, O Messenger of God? He said: Abd Allah b. Ubayy. He said: And what did he say? He said: He claimed that if he returns to Madinah, the mightier will indeed expel the meaner from it. He said: Then you, O Messenger of God, by God, will expel him from it if you wish. He, by God, is the mean one and you are the mighty one. Then he said: O Messenger of God, be gentle with him, for by God, God has brought you to us while his people were stringing beads for him to crown him, and indeed he thinks that you have robbed him of a kingdom.

✧ [THE MESSENGER’S MARCH WITH THE PEOPLE TO DISTRACT THEM FROM THE STRIFE IN THE EXPEDITION OF BANŪ AL-MUṢṬALIQ] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ marched with the people during that day of theirs until evening, and during their night until morning, and through the early part of that day of theirs until the sun distressed them. Then he halted with the people, and they had hardly tarried before they found the touch of the ground, and they fell asleep. The Messenger of God ﷺ did that only to distract the people from the talk that had taken place the day before, from the talk of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy.

✧ [The Messenger's foretelling of the death of Rifāʿah during the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed with the people, and he took the Hijāz route until he halted at a watering place in the Hijāz a little above al-Naqīʿ, called Baqʿāʾ. When the Messenger of God ﷺ departed, a strong wind blew upon the people, harming them, and they feared it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Do not fear it, for it has blown only for the death of a great one among the great ones of the unbelievers. When they arrived in Madinah, they found that Rifāʿah b. Zayd b. al-Tābūt, one of the Banū Qaynuqāʿ—and he was a great one among the great ones of the Jews and a refuge for the hypocrites—had died on that day.

✧ [What was revealed in the Qurʾān concerning Ibn Ubayy] And the sūrah in which God mentioned the hypocrites was revealed concerning Ibn Ubayy and those who were in a situation like his. When it was revealed, the Messenger of God ﷺ took hold of the ear of Zayd b. Arqam, then said: This is the one whose ear God has fulfilled. And the matter of his father reached ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy.

✧ The request of Ibn ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy to undertake the killing of his father himself, and the Messenger's pardon Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that ʿAbd Allāh came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: O Messenger of God, it has reached me that you intend to kill ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy because of what has reached you about him. If you must do it, then command me, and I will bring you his head. By God, the Khazraj know that there was no man among them more dutiful to his father than I. I fear that you will command someone else to kill him, and then my soul will not allow me to look upon the killer of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy walking among the people without my killing him—killing a believer for a disbeliever—and thereby entering the Fire. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Rather we will treat him gently and keep good company with him as long as he remains with us.

✧ Ibn Ubayy's people taking over his punishment. Thereafter, whenever he committed an offense, his people were the ones who reproached him, seized him, and rebuked him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb when that about their conduct reached him: 'How do you see it, O ʿUmar? By God, had I killed him on the day you said to me, "Kill him," noses would have quivered for him; if I ordered them today to kill him, they would kill him.' ✧ [Miqyas b. Subabah and his ruse in seeking vengeance for his brother and his poetry about that] Ibn Ishaq said: Miqyas b. Subabah came from Makkah as a Muslim, as it appeared, and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have come to you as a Muslim, and I have come to seek the blood-money of my brother, who was killed by mistake. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for him the blood-money of his brother Hisham b. Subabah. He stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a short while, then he attacked the killer of his brother and killed him, then he departed to Makkah as an apostate. He said in poetry he composed: He healed the soul that he died at al-Qaʿ, propped up, his two garments stained with the blood of the veins of the neck. The anxieties of the soul before his killing used to visit and deny me the softness of the beds. By it I resolved my vengeance and attained my revenge, and I was the first to return to the idols. By him I avenged Fihr and carried his blood-money to the nobles of Banu al-Najjar, lords of Fariʿ. Miqyas b. Subabah also said: I covered him with a blow that brought upon him a flow of gushing blood from the chest, rising over him and ceasing. I said while death was covering him, its lines upon him: Never feel secure from Banu Bakr when they are wronged. [The war cry of the Muslims] Ibn Hisham said: The war cry of the Muslims on the day of Banu al-Mustaliq was: O Mansur, kill, kill.

✧ [The affair of Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith] The Messenger of God ﷺ had taken from them many captives, and their distribution among the Muslims spread. Among those taken as captives that day was Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār, the wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ distributed the captives of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith fell to the share of Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās, or to a paternal cousin of his. She made a contract with him for her ransom. She was a sweet and beautiful woman; no one saw her but she captivated his soul. She came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to seek his help in her ransom. ʿĀʾishah said: By God, no sooner did I see her at the door of my chamber than I disliked her, knowing that he ﷺ would see in her what I saw. She entered upon him and said: O Messenger of God, I am Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār, the chief of his people. Affliction has befallen me, as is not hidden from you, and I fell to the share of Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās, or to a paternal cousin of his. I made a contract with him for my ransom, and I have come to you seeking help with my ransom. He said: Would you like something better than that? She said: What is it, O Messenger of God? He said: I will pay your ransom and marry you. She said: Yes, O Messenger of God. He said: I have done it. She said: The news went out to the people that the Messenger of God ﷺ had married Juwayriyah, the daughter of al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār. The people said: The in-laws of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they released what they had in their hands. She said: By his marrying her, a hundred households of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq were set free. I know of no woman who was greater in blessing upon her people than she. Ibn Hishām said: It is said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq with Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith, and he was at Dhāt al-Jaysh, he handed Juwayriyah to a man of the Anṣār as a trust and ordered him to guard her, and the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah. Her father al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār came with the ransom for his daughter. When he was at al-ʿAqīq, he looked at the camels he had brought for ransom and coveted two of them, so he hid them in a ravine of the ravines of al-ʿAqīq. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Muḥammad, you have taken my daughter, and this is her ransom. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Where are the two camels you hid in al-ʿAqīq, in such-and-such a ravine? Al-Ḥārith said: I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that you are Muḥammad, the Messenger of God. By God, none but God was aware of that. Al-Ḥārith became a Muslim, and with him two of his sons and people of his tribe became Muslims. He sent for the two camels and brought them, and handed over the camels to the Prophet ﷺ, and his daughter Juwayriyah was handed over to him. She became a Muslim, and her Islam was good. The Messenger of God ﷺ asked her father for her hand, and he married her to him, giving her a dowry of four hundred dirhams.

✧ Al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah and Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, and what was revealed in the Qurʾān concerning that. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Rūmān narrated to me that after their conversion to Islam, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ to them. When they heard of him, they rode out to meet him. When he heard of them, he feared them and returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ, telling him that the people had intended to kill him and had withheld from him the alms (ṣadaqah) that they owed. The Muslims then spoke much about raiding them, until the Messenger of God ﷺ resolved to raid them. While matters stood thus, their delegation came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, we heard of your messenger when you sent him to us, and we went out to him to honor him and to deliver to him the alms we owed. But he turned back and departed, and we have learned that he claimed to the Messenger of God ﷺ that we went out to kill him. By God, we did not come for that.' Then God (Exalted is He) revealed concerning him and them: 'O you who believe, if a disobedient person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become regretful over what you have done. And know that among you is the Messenger of God; if he obeyed you in much of the matter, you would suffer hardship...' to the end of the verse. The Messenger of God ﷺ had returned from that journey, as narrated to me by someone I do not suspect, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, until when he was near Madinah—and ʿĀʾishah was with him on that journey—the people of the slander said what they said.

✧ [The falling of ʿĀʾishah's necklace and her staying behind to search for it] She said: At that time the women used to eat only morsels; meat had not stirred them so that they became heavy. When my camel was saddled for me, I would sit in my howdah; then the men who saddled it for me would come and carry me. They would take hold of the lower part of the howdah, lift it, and place it on the camel's back, then tie it with its ropes. Then they would take the camel's head and lead it away. She said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished that journey of his, he turned homeward, until when he was near Madinah he halted at a stopping-place, and he passed the night there. Then he announced to the people the departure, and the people set off. I went out for some need of mine, and on my neck was a necklace of mine containing beads of Ẓifār onyx. When I had finished, it slipped from my neck without my knowing. When I returned to the baggage, I went to feel for it on my neck and did not find it. The people had already begun to depart, so I went back to the place where I had gone and searched for it until I found it. The men who used to saddle the camel for me came to my place, and they had finished saddling it. They took the howdah, thinking that I was in it, as I used to do. They lifted it up and tied it onto the camel, not doubting that I was in it. Then they took the camel's head and led it away. So I returned to the camp, and there was no caller in it and no answerer; the people had departed.

✧ [The passing of Ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal by her and his carrying her on his camel] She said: So I wrapped myself in my outer garment, then lay down in my place, and knew that if I were missed, they would return to me. She said: By God, while I was lying down, Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal al-Sulamī passed by me. He had fallen behind the army for some need of his, so he did not spend the night with the people. He saw my black shape, approached, and stood over me. He used to see me before the veil was imposed upon us. When he saw me, he said: “We belong to God, and to Him we return—the wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ!”—while I was wrapped in my clothes. He said: “What kept you behind, may God have mercy on you?” She said: I did not speak to him. Then he brought the camel close and said: “Mount,” and he withdrew from me. She said: So I mounted, and he took the camel’s head and set off quickly, seeking the people. By God, we did not catch up with the people, and I was not missed until morning came. The people halted, and when they had settled, the man appeared leading me. Then the people of the slander said what they said, and the army was thrown into confusion. By God, I knew nothing of any of that.

He said: No harm upon you. She said: So I moved to my mother, having no knowledge of anything that had happened, until I recovered from my ailment after twenty-some nights. We were an Arab people; we did not have in our houses these latrines that the non-Arabs have, which we found disgusting and disliked; we would only go out to the open areas of Madinah. The women used to go out every night for their needs. I went out one night for some need of mine, and with me was Umm Misṭaḥ bt. Abī Ruhm b. al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf — her mother was the daughter of Ṣakhr b. ʿĀmir b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym, the maternal aunt of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ. She said: By God, while she was walking with me, she stumbled over her cloak and said: May Misṭaḥ perish! — Misṭaḥ is a nickname, and his name is ʿAwf. She said: I said: By God’s life, what a bad thing you have said about a man of the Emigrants who was present at Badr. She said: Or has not the news reached you, O daughter of Abū Bakr? She said: I said: What news? Then she told me what had happened from the talk of the people of the slander. She said: I said: Has this really happened? She said: Yes, by God, it has. She said: By God, I was not able to relieve my need, and I returned. By God, I did not cease weeping until I thought that weeping would split my liver. She said: I said to my mother: May God forgive you. The people have talked about what they have talked about, and you have not mentioned any of that to me. She said: O my little daughter, lighten the matter upon yourself, for by God, rarely is there a beautiful woman, married to a man who loves her and who has co-wives, except that they talk much and the people talk much against her.

As for Zaynab, God Almighty protected her through her religion, so she said nothing but good. As for Ḥamnah bt. She said: Then Saʿd b. ʿUbādah stood up—and before that he was considered a righteous man—and said: You lie, by the life of God, we will not strike their necks. By God, you did not say this statement except because you knew that they are from the Khazraj; and had they been from your own people, you would not have said this. Usayd said: You lie, by the life of God, but you are a hypocrite, arguing on behalf of the hypocrites. (She said:) She would say: "By God, I know nothing but good, and I have never found fault with ʿĀʾishah in anything, except that I used to knead my dough and would tell her to watch it, but she would fall asleep over it, and a sheep would come and eat it."

✧ [The revelation of the Qurʾān declaring ʿĀʾishah's innocence] She said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came in to me while my parents were with me, and with me was a woman of the Anṣār, and I was weeping and she was weeping with me. He sat down, praised God, and extolled Him, then said: O ʿĀʾishah, there has come to you what has reached you of the people's talk, so fear God; and if you have committed any evil of what the people say, then repent to God, for God accepts repentance from His servants. She said: By God, no sooner had he said that to me than my tears dried up, so that I felt nothing of them. I waited for my parents to answer the Messenger of God ﷺ on my behalf, but they did not speak. She said: By God's oath, I deemed myself too insignificant and too small in rank for God to send down Qurʾān concerning me that would be recited in the mosques and prayed with. But I had hoped that the Messenger of God ﷺ would see something in his sleep by which God would give him the lie concerning me, because He knew my innocence, or that he would be given some report. But as for Qurʾān being sent down concerning me, by God, my soul was more insignificant in my sight than that. She said: When I saw that my parents would not speak, I said to them: Will you not answer the Messenger of God ﷺ? She said: They said: By God, we do not know how to answer him. She said: By God, I know of no household upon which there entered what entered upon the family of Abū Bakr in those days. She said: When they both withheld speech from me, I broke into tears and wept. Then I said: By God, I will never repent to God of what you have mentioned ever. By God, I know that if I were to admit what the people say—and God knows that I am innocent of it—I would be saying what never happened; and if I deny what they say, you will not believe me. She said: Then I sought the name of Jacob, but I could not remember it. So I said: But I shall say as the father of Joseph said: "So patience is most fitting, and God is the one whose help is sought against what you describe." She said: By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ had not left his seat before he was overtaken by what used to overtake him from God. He was covered with his garment, and a leather cushion was placed under his head. As for me, when I saw that of which I saw, by God, I was not frightened nor did I care; I knew that I was innocent and that God, Mighty and Majestic, would not wrong me. And as for my parents, by Him in whose hand is the soul of ʿĀʾishah, the Messenger of God ﷺ was not relieved before I thought their souls would depart, out of fear lest there come from God confirmation of what the people had said. She said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ was relieved, and he sat up, and sweat was rolling off him like pearls on a cold day. He began wiping the sweat from his forehead and saying: Rejoice, O ʿĀʾishah, for God has sent down your innocence. She said: I said: With the praise of God. Then he went out to the people and addressed them, and he recited to them what God had sent down upon him of the Qurʾān concerning that. Then he commanded that Misṭaḥ b. Uthāthah, Ḥassān b. Thābit, and Ḥamnah bt. Jaḥsh—they being among those who had openly uttered the foul slander—be given their prescribed punishment, so they were flogged.

✧ [Abū Ayyūb and his mention of ʿĀʾishah's purity to his wife] Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me, from one of the men of Banū al-Najjār: that Abū Ayyūb Khālid b. Zayd, his wife Umm Ayyūb said to him: "O Abū Ayyūb, do you not hear what the people are saying about ʿĀʾishah?" He said: "Yes, and that is a lie. Would you, O Umm Ayyūb, have done it?" She said: "No, by God, I would never do it." He said: "Then ʿĀʾishah, by God, is better than you." [What was revealed of the Qurʾān concerning that] She said: When the Qurʾān came down mentioning those of the people of indecency who said what they said from the people of the slander, He, Exalted is He, said: "Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you. Do not consider it an evil for you; rather, it is good for you. For every one of them is what he earned of sin, and he who took upon himself the greater part of it among them—for him is a great punishment" (Q 24:11). That is Ḥassān b. Thābit and his companions who said what they said. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: That is ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy and his companions. Ibn Hishām said: The one who took upon himself the greater part of it is ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy, and Ibn Isḥāq has mentioned that in this tradition before this. Then He, Exalted is He, said: "Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women not think good of themselves and say, 'This is obvious slander'?" (Q 24:12)—that is, and so they said as Abū Ayyūb and his wife said. Then He said: "When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of God, tremendous" (Q 24:15).

✧ [Abū Bakr's intention not to spend on Misṭaḥ and then his changing his mind] When this was revealed concerning ʿĀʾishah and those who said about her what they said, Abū Bakr — who used to spend on Misṭaḥ because of his kinship and his need — said: 'By God, I shall never spend anything on Misṭaḥ, nor shall I ever benefit him with any benefit after what he said about ʿĀʾishah and brought upon us.' She said: Then God revealed concerning that: 'And let not those of virtue among you and affluence swear not to give to the near of kin, the needy, and the emigrants in the way of God; and let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that God should forgive you? And God is forgiving, merciful.' [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some uncommon words] [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some uncommon words] Ibn Hishām said: One says kibruhu and kubruhu in the narrative, but in the Qurʾān it is kibruhu with kasrah. Ibn Hishām said: 'And let not those of virtue among you swear' and 'let not those of virtue among you refrain.' Imruʾ al-Qays b. Ḥijr al-Kindī said: 'Many an opponent concerning you who was crooked I repelled, a sincere adviser despite his reproach, not refraining.' This verse is in a poem of his. And it is said: 'Let not those of virtue swear' means 'let not those of virtue take an oath.' This is the saying of al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, as has reached us from him. And in the Book of God, exalted is He: 'For those who swear off from their women' — it is from al-alyah, and al-alyah is the oath. Ḥassān b. Thābit said: 'I swore an oath — among all people, striving from me, an oath of piety, not of dotage.' This verse is in verses of his which I shall mention, God willing, in their proper place. So the meaning of 'that they give' in this interpretation is 'that they do not give.' And in the Book of God, mighty and majestic is He: 'God makes clear to you lest you go astray' — He means: that you not go astray; 'and He withholds the sky from falling upon the earth' — He means: that it not fall upon the earth. And Ibn Mufarrigh al-Ḥimyarī said: 'I did not frighten the grazing beasts in the bright dawn as a raider, nor was I called Yazīd on the day I was given, through fear of death, injustice, while the fates watch me that I should turn aside' — he means: that I not turn aside. These two verses are in verses of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: She said: Abū Bakr said: 'Yes, by God, indeed I love that God should forgive me,' and he restored to Misṭaḥ his allowance which he used to give him, and he said: 'By God, I shall never take it away from him.'

✧ [ The concern of Ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal to kill Ḥassān ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal confronted Ḥassān b. Thābit with the sword when word reached him of what he had been saying about him. Ḥassān had, along with that, recited poetry in which he alluded to Ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal and to those of the Arabs of Muḍar who had become Muslims. He said: The cloaked ones have grown mighty and numerous, while Ibn al-Furayʿah has become the town's byword. His mother is bereaved of the one you accompanied, or who was clinging to the lion's paw. What of my slain one, whom I set out for and seize— no blood-money for him will be given, nor retaliation. The sea, when the north wind blows, surges and casts the ships with foam— is not one day more overwhelming than I, when you see me in fury, tearing like the rending of a cold cloud. As for Quraysh, I will never make peace with them until they turn back from errors to right guidance, and leave al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā in a place apart, and all prostrate to the One, the Eternal, and bear witness that what the Messenger told them is true, and fulfill God's covenant and the binding oaths. Then Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal confronted him and struck him with the sword, then said—as Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah narrated to me: Receive the sword's edge from me, for I am a lad who, when satirized, is no poet. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith al-Taymī narrated to me that Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās leaped upon Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal when he struck Ḥassān, and bound his hands to his neck with a rope, then took him to the abode of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj. ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah met him and said, "What is this?" He said, "Does it not amaze you that he struck Ḥassān with the sword? By God, I think he has killed him." ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said to him, "Does the Messenger of God ﷺ know anything of what you have done?" He said, "No, by God." He said, "You have been bold. Release the man." So he released him. Then they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He summoned Ḥassān and Ṣafwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal. Ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal said, "O Messenger of God, he harmed me and satirized me, so anger overcame me and I struck him." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Ḥassān, "Do good, O Ḥassān. Have you become disfigured against my people after God guided them to Islam?" Then he said, "Do good, O Ḥassān, concerning what has befallen you." He said, "It is yours, O Messenger of God." Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: "Abʿda an hudākum Allāh lil-islām"—"Even after God guided you to Islam?" Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm narrated to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ gave him, as compensation for it, Bayruḥāʾ—which is the palace of the Banū Ḥudaylah today in Madinah. It had been property of Abū Ṭalḥah b. Sahl, who gave it as charity to the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ gave it to Ḥassān in return for the blow, and gave him Sīrīn, a Coptic slave woman, who bore him ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān. She said: ʿĀʾishah used to say: Ibn al-Muʿaṭṭal was asked about, and they found him to be a man who was impotent, not approaching women. Then he was killed after that as a martyr.

✧ Ḥassān b. Thābit said, apologizing for what he had said concerning ʿĀʾishah ؓ: A chaste and dignified woman, not suspected of any flaw, she rises hungry from the flesh of the heedless. A noble lady of a clan of Luʾayy b. Ghālib, whose noble deeds and glory never cease. Refined, whose nature God has made good, and purified her from every evil and falsehood. If I have said what you have claimed, then may my whip never be raised by my fingers. How could I, while my love and support as long as I live are for the family of the Messenger of God, the ornament of assemblies? He has ranks high above all people, surpassed only by the assault of the overreacher. For what has been said does not stick, but it is the word of a man who slanders me. Ibn Hishām said: His verse “A noble lady of a clan” and the one after it, and his verse “He has high ranks” are from Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah related to me that a woman praised Ḥassān b. Thābit’s daughter in the presence of ʿĀʾishah, saying: “A chaste and dignified woman, not suspected of any flaw, she rises hungry from the flesh of the heedless.” ʿĀʾishah said: “But her father…”

✧ Poetry in satire of Ḥassān and Misṭaḥ Ibn Isḥāq said: A Muslim poet said concerning the flogging of Ḥassān and his companions for their slander against ʿĀʾishah — Ibn Hishām said: concerning the flogging of Ḥassān and his two companions —: Ḥassān has tasted what he deserved, and Ḥamnah and Misṭaḥ, when they uttered calumny. They assailed with stoning of the unseen the wife of their Prophet, and the wrath of the Lord of the Noble Throne, so they were grieved. They harmed the Messenger of God in her regard, so they were covered with lasting disgraces which they made universal, and they were exposed. And upon them were poured tightly woven scourges, as if they were showers of rain from the peaks of the clouds, shed forth.
