Sirat Ibn Hisham 1240

Jahjāh and Sinān, and what happened with b. Ubayy

Translation

✧ Ibn Ubayy's people taking over his punishment. Thereafter, whenever he committed an offense, his people were the ones who reproached him, seized him, and rebuked him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb when that about their conduct reached him: 'How do you see it, O ʿUmar? By God, had I killed him on the day you said to me, "Kill him," noses would have quivered for him; if I ordered them today to kill him, they would kill him.' He said: ʿUmar said: 'By God, I knew that the command of the Messenger of God ﷺ is greater in blessing than my command.'
