The falling of ʿĀʾishah's necklace and her staying behind to search for it
Translation
✧ [Her moving to her father’s house and her learning what was said about her — ʿĀʾishah] Ibn Isḥāq said: She said: Until I found uneasiness in my soul, so I said, when I saw what I saw of his coldness toward me: O Messenger of God, would you permit me, so that I may move to my mother and she may nurse me? He said: No harm upon you. She said: So I moved to my mother, having no knowledge of anything that had happened, until I recovered from my ailment after twenty-some nights. We were an Arab people; we did not have in our houses these latrines that the non-Arabs have, which we found disgusting and disliked; we would only go out to the open areas of Madinah. The women used to go out every night for their needs. I went out one night for some need of mine, and with me was Umm Misṭaḥ bt. Abī Ruhm b. al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf — her mother was the daughter of Ṣakhr b. ʿĀmir b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Taym, the maternal aunt of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ. She said: By God, while she was walking with me, she stumbled over her cloak and said: May Misṭaḥ perish! — Misṭaḥ is a nickname, and his name is ʿAwf. She said: I said: By God’s life, what a bad thing you have said about a man of the Emigrants who was present at Badr. She said: Or has not the news reached you, O daughter of Abū Bakr? She said: I said: What news? Then she told me what had happened from the talk of the people of the slander. She said: I said: Has this really happened? She said: Yes, by God, it has. She said: By God, I was not able to relieve my need, and I returned. By God, I did not cease weeping until I thought that weeping would split my liver. She said: I said to my mother: May God forgive you. The people have talked about what they have talked about, and you have not mentioned any of that to me. She said: O my little daughter, lighten the matter upon yourself, for by God, rarely is there a beautiful woman, married to a man who loves her and who has co-wives, except that they talk much and the people talk much against her.
