✧ The Expedition of Dhū Qarad [Ibn Ḥiṣn's raid on the Messenger's milch camels]. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah, and he had not stayed there but a few nights before ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr al-Fazārī raided, with horsemen from Ghaṭafān, some milch camels belonging to the Messenger of God ﷺ at al-Ghābah. With them were a man from Banū Ghifār and his wife. They killed the man and carried off the woman together with the milch camels.

✧ [The gallantry of Ibn al-Akwaʿ in this expedition] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, and one whom I do not suspect, narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik, each having related part of the account of the expedition of Dhū Qarad: that the first to give warning of them was Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ al-Aslamī. He went out early, intending [to go to] al-Ghābah, carrying his bow and arrows slung over his shoulder, and with him was a servant of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, leading a horse of his. When he ascended Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ, he saw some of their horses and looked out toward the side of Salʿ; then he cried out: “Wā ṣabāḥāh!” Then he set off hastening in the tracks of the people. He was like a beast of prey until he caught up with the people, and he began turning them back with arrows, saying whenever he shot: “Take it! I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ; today is the day of the sucklings.” When the horses were turned toward him, he fled; then he opposed them, and when shooting became possible for him, he shot and said: “Take it! I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ; today is the day of the sucklings.” He said: One of them would say, “Is it our little ʿAkwaʿ? He is the first of the day.”

✧ [The Messenger's cry and the racing of the horsemen to him during the expedition of Dhū Qarad] He said: The cry of Ibn al-Akwaʿ reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he cried out in Madinah: "To arms! To arms!" The horses raced to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The first of the horsemen to reach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr, who is called al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad, the ally of Banū Zuhrah. Then the first horseman of the Anṣār to stand before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after al-Miqdād was ʿAbbād b. Bishr b. Waqsh b. Zughbah b. Zaʿūrāʾ, one of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal; and Saʿd b. Zayd, one of Banū Kaʿb b. ʿAbd al-Ashhal; and Usayd b. Ẓuhayr, brother of Banū Ḥārithah b. al-Ḥārith, about whom there is uncertainty; and ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan, brother of Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah; and Muḥriz b. Naḍlah, brother of Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah; and Abū Qatādah al-Ḥārith b. Ribʿī, brother of Banū Salimah; and Abū ʿAyyāsh, who is ʿUbayd b. Zayd b. al-Ṣāmit, brother of Banū Zurayq. When they had gathered to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he appointed over them Saʿd b. Zayd, according to what has reached me, then he said: "Go out in pursuit of the people until I catch up with you among the people."

✧ [The Messenger and his counsel to Abū ʿAyyāsh to leave his horse in the expedition of Dhū Qarad] The Messenger of God ﷺ, as has reached me from men of the Banū Zurayq, said to Abū ʿAyyāsh: "O Abū ʿAyyāsh, would it not have been better had I given this horse to a man who is a better horseman than you, so that he might catch up with the people?" Abū ʿAyyāsh said: I said: "O Messenger of God, I am the best horseman among the people." Then I struck the horse, and by God, it had not carried me fifty cubits before it threw me. I was astonished that the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Had you given it to one more skilled in horsemanship than you," while I said, "I am the best horseman among the people." Men of the Banū Zurayq claimed that the Messenger of God ﷺ gave the horse of Abū ʿAyyāsh to Muʿādh b. Māʿiṣ, or ʿĀʾidh b. Māʿiṣ b. Qays b. Khalada, and he was the eighth. Some people count Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ as one of the eight, and they drop Usayd b. Ẓuhayr, the brother of the Banū Ḥārithah. God knows best which of these it was. Salamah was not a horseman that day; he was the first to catch up with the people on foot. The horsemen went out in pursuit of the people until they caught up with one another.

✧ [The racing ahead of Muḥriz to the people and his death in the expedition of Dhū Qarad] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that the first horseman to catch up with the people was Muḥriz b. Naḍlah, the brother of the Banū Asad b. Khuzaymah—Muḥriz was called al-Akhram, and he was called Qumayr—and that when the fright occurred, a horse belonging to Maḥmūd b. Maslamah galloped about in the walled garden when it heard the neighing of the horses. It was a well-trained, rested horse. Some women of the women of the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal said, when they saw the horse galloping about in the walled garden with a palm trunk to which it was tied: 'O Qumayr, would you like to ride this horse? For it is as you see. Then you can catch up with the Messenger of God ﷺ and the Muslims.' He said: 'Yes.' So they gave it to him. He went out on it, and it was not long before he outstripped the horses with its freshness until he overtook the people. He stood before them in front of them, then said: 'Stop, O company of the Banū al-Lakīʿah, until those behind you from your rear catch up with you—of the Emigrants and the Helpers.' He said: A man from among them charged at him and killed him. The horse bolted, and they could not seize it until it stopped at its tethering place among the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal. No Muslim was killed other than him.

✧ Ibn Hishām said: On that day, among the Muslims killed with Muḥriz was Waqqāṣ b. Mujazziz al-Mudlijī, in the expedition of Dhū Qarad, so more than one of the people of knowledge mentioned.

Mihsan, called al-Janah, and Mujazziz was killed and al-Janah was taken as booty.

✧ [The wife of al-Ghifārī and what she vowed with the Messenger during the expedition of Dhū Qarad] The wife of al-Ghifārī came on a she-camel from the camels of the Messenger of God ﷺ until she arrived to him and told him the news. When she finished, she said, 'O Messenger of God, I vowed to God that I would slaughter her if God saved me upon her.' He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ smiled, then said, 'What a bad reward you have given her: God carried you upon her and saved you by her, then you would slaughter her. There is no vow in disobedience to God, nor in what you do not own. It is only a she-camel from my camels. Return to your family with the blessing of God.' The account concerning the wife of al-Ghifārī and what she said, and what the Messenger of God ﷺ said to her, is from Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, from al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī.

✧ [Ḥassān's poetry on Dhū Qarad] Among the poetry that was recited on the day of Dhū Qarad was the saying of Ḥassān b. Thābit: Had it not been for what she encountered and its vultures touched at the south of Sāyah yesterday in al-Taqwād, They would have met you carrying every fully armed man, protector of the truth, glorious in ancestry. And it would have pleased the sons of the foundling that we were at peace on the morning of the horsemen of al-Miqdād. We were eight, while they were a mighty host, a throng, and they were pierced with lances in separate groups. We were among the people who followed them closely and who advanced the reins of every swift steed. Nay, by the Lord of the swaying camels toward Minā that cut across the breadth of the mountain passes, Until we let the horses loose in your courtyards and return with the captives and the children, Gently, with every lean-flanked horse and long-bodied mare in every battle they turned aside and in every valley. Their hind hooves were worn away and their backs became visible, one day being led by it and one day a chase. Thus indeed our steeds are ever ready for battle, and war is kindled by the wind of swift raiders. And our swords are white of blades that reveal the shields of iron and the skull of the seeker. God took them to task for His sanctity and for the might of the Merciful, with misfortunes. They were in an abode of ease, but they were transformed on the days of Dhū Qarad into the faces of slaves.

✧ [Saʿd’s anger with Ḥassān and Ḥassān’s attempt to appease him during the expedition of Dhū Qarad]: Ibn Hishām said: When Ḥassān said it, Saʿd b. Zayd became angry with him and swore that he would never speak to him again. He said: He went away to my horses and my horsemen and made them for al-Miqdād. Ḥassān apologized to him and said: By God, that was not what I intended, but the rhyme happened to fit the name of al-Miqdād. And he recited some verses with which to please Saʿd: If you want the strongest, the hardy one, or one of use, then upon you is Saʿd—Saʿd b. Zayd, who is not overcome. But Saʿd did not accept it from him, and it availed nothing.

✧ [Another poem by Ḥassān on the day of Dhū Qarad] Ḥassān b. Thābit said concerning the day of Dhū Qarad: Does ʿUyaynah suppose, when he visited it, that he would soon destroy palaces therein? You were made to disbelieve what you had made yourself believe, and you said, “We shall gain a mighty thing.” So you loathed al-Madīnah when you visited it, and you heard the roaring of lions within it. They turned in haste like the running of ostriches, and they did not uncover a shielded warrior. A commander over us is the Messenger of the King— how beloved to us is he as a commander! A messenger whom we believe in what he brought, and he recites a Book, radiant and luminous.

✧ [Kaʿb's poetry on the day of Dhū Qarad] Kaʿb b. Mālik said on the day of Dhū Qarad concerning the horsemen: Do the sons of the foundling woman think that we, on horseback, are not like them among the horsemen? We are a people who do not regard killing as a disgrace, and we do not turn back before the thrusting spears. We indeed entertain the guest from the tops of the sandhills, and we strike the head of the haughty, insolent one. We repulse the warriors of the marked ones when they boast, with blows that make the vaunt of the laggard cease. With every young man, protector of what is sacred, glorious, generous, like a wolf of the ghaḍā trees, snatching. They defend their honors and their inherited wealth with white swords that cleave the skulls beneath the helmets. Ask the Banū Badr when you meet them what the brothers did on the day of mutual struggle. When you go out, tell the truth to those you meet, and do not conceal your news in the assemblies. And say: We slipped away from the claws of a lion with heat in the breast as long as one does not fight. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd recited to me his verse: “We indeed entertain the guest.”

✧ [The poetry of Shaddād to ʿUyaynah in the expedition of Dhū Qarad] Ibn Isḥāq said: Shaddād b. ʿĀriḍ al-Jushamī said, on the day of Dhū Qarad, to ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn, and ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn was given the kunyah Abū Mālik: So why did you not turn back, Abū Mālik, while your horses were in retreat, being killed? You mentioned returning to ʿAsjar, but far away—the return journey has become distant. You reassured yourself with one of quick spirit, a swift runner of the open spaces when he is let loose. When the north wind grasped him toward you, he surged like a cooking pot that has flared up. And when you recognized the servants of God, the first did not wait for the last. You recognized horsemen who had been trained in pursuing warriors when they went down to the plain. When they drive the horses, they suffer with them in open ground, but if they are driven back, they dismount, And they seek refuge in the midst of the battlefield with white swords, which the polisher has made pure.
