They are those who do not seek omens, do not burn themselves with branding, and do not seek blessings through the performance of actions. Rather, they put their trust in their Lord.' Their chief was stung, so they came to us and said, 'Is there anyone among you who can perform ruqya?' I said, 'Yes, I can perform ruqya.' They said, 'Perform ruqya on our companion.' I said, 'No, for we asked you for hospitality and you refused to host us.' They said, 'We will make a payment for you.' They set for me thirty sheep. I went to him and began to wipe him and recite the Opening of the Book until he recovered. We took the sheep and said, 'Should we take them while we do not know how to perform ruqya well? We will not eat them until we ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about them.' So we came to him and mentioned that to him. He began to say, 'What makes you know that it is a ruqya?' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I did not know that it was a ruqya; it was something Allah cast into my heart.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Eat, and assign a share for me with you.'

  30. Sahih Ibn Hibban 6113Sahih

We landed at a place where a woman came to us and said: A scorpion has bitten the chief of the tribe. Is there any incantator amongst you? A person amongst us stood up (and went with her). We had no idea that he had been a good incantator but he practiced incantation with the help of Sura al-Fatiha and the (the chief) was all right. They gave him a flock of sheep and served us milk. We said (to him): Are you a good incantator. Thereupon he said: I did not do it but by the help of Sura al-Fatiha. He said: Do not drive (these goats) until we go to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and find out (whether it is permissible to accept (this reward of incantation). So we came to Allah's Apostle ﷺ and made a mention of that to him, whereupon he said: How did you come to know that this (Sura al-Fatiha) could be used as an incantation? So distribute them (amongst those who had been present there with him) and allocate a share of mine also. (Using translation from Muslim 2201c)
