56. Contagions and Omens
✧ There is no contagion and no evil omen, but I like good omens.
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no contagion.' And he also related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'A sick (animal) should not be brought to a healthy one.' Abu Salamah said: Abu Hurayrah used to narrate both of these from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then afterwards Abu Hurayrah became silent about his saying 'There is no contagion,' and he maintained that 'a sick (animal) should not be brought to a healthy one.' Al-Harith b. Abi Dhi'ab, who was the cousin of Abu Hurayrah, said: I used to hear you, O Abu Hurayrah, narrate to us along with this hadith another hadith which you have now stopped narrating. You used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no contagion.' Abu Hurayrah refused to acknowledge that and said: 'A sick (animal) should not be brought to a healthy one.' Abu Salamah said: By my life, Abu Hurayrah used to narrate to us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no contagion.' I do not know whether Abu Hurayrah forgot or whether one of the two statements abrogated the other.
✧ 'There is no contagion, no Safar, and no Hamah.' A bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah, what about camels that are in the sand like gazelles, then a mangy camel comes and enters among them and makes them mangy? He said: 'Then who infected the first one?'
✧ 'There is no Tiyarah, no Hamah, no contagion, and no Safar.' A man said: O Messenger of Allah, we take a mangy sheep and throw it among the flock, and the flock becomes mangy? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Then who infected the first one?'
✧ 'There is no contagion and no Tiyarah. A camel became mangy and made a hundred mangy; then who infected the first one?'
✧ A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, a sore appears on the lip of a camel or on its rump, and then all the camels become mangy. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Then who infected the first one? Their lives, their afflictions, and their provision.'
✧ The Prophet ﷺ took the hand of a leper and placed it with his own in the dish, and said: 'Eat in the name of Allah, with confidence in Allah and reliance upon Him.'
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6121Hasan sahih
✧ 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to like good omens and dislike evil omens.'
✧ 'Tiyarah (belief in evil omens) is Shirk (associating partners with Allah). There is none of us but has some of it, but Allah removes it by reliance on Him.'
✧ 'There is no Tiyarah, and Tiyarah is upon the one who practices it. And if it be in anything, it is in the house, the horse, and the woman.'
✧ 'There is no Tiyarah, and the best of it is Fa'l (a good omen).' It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is Fa'l? He said: 'A good word that one of you hears.'
✧ 'There is no Tiyarah, and the best of Fa'l is a good word that one of you hears.'
✧ 'Leave the birds in their nests.'
✧ 'There is no contagion, and no safar (month of Safar), and no ghoul.'
✧ I asked Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas about believing in omens in birds (tayarah)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'There is no contagion, and no bird omen, and no hamah (death-owl). If there is any bird omen in anything, it is in the woman, the horse, and the house.'
