يَا عَمَّارُ أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ آنِفًا، فَقُلْتُ: يَا جِبْرِيلُ حَدِّثْنِي بِفَضَائِلِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي السَّمَاءِ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ لَوْ حَدَّثْتُكَ بِفَضَائِلِ عُمَرَ مِثْلَ مَا لَبِثَ نُوحٌ فِي قَوْمِهِ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمْسِينَ عَامًا مَا نَفِدَتْ فَضَائِلُ عُمَرَ، وَإِنَّ عُمَرَ لَحَسَنَةٌ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ
✧ O 'Ammar, Gabriel came to me just now, and I said: O Gabriel, tell me of the virtues of 'Umar b. al-Khattab in heaven. He said: O Muhammad, if I were to tell you of the virtues of 'Umar for as long as Noah remained among his people, a thousand years less fifty, the virtues of 'Umar would not be exhausted. Indeed 'Umar is one good deed among the good deeds of Abu Bakr.

أَنَّهُ رَأَى عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ تَوَضَّأَ وَأَنَّهُ خَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُهُ
✧ That he saw 'Ammar b. Yasir perform ablution and that he ran his fingers through his beard. It was said to him: Do you do this? He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it.

أَنَّ عَمَّارًا، قَالَ لِعُمَرَ: تَذْكُرُ حَيْثُ كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ فِي الْإِبِلِ، فَأَصَابَتْنِي جَنَابَةٌ، فَتَمَعَّكْتُ تَمَعُّكَ الدَّابَّةِ، فَلَقِيتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ التَّيَمُّمُ
✧ That 'Ammar said to 'Umar: Do you remember when you and I were with the camels, and I became ritually impure, so I rolled in the dust as an animal rolls? I met the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said: It would have sufficed you to perform tayammum.

كُنَّا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، إِنَّمَا نَمْكُثُ الشَّهْرَ وَالشَّهْرَيْنِ لَا نَجِدُ الْمَاءَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَلَمْ أَكُنْ أُصَلِّي حَتَّى أَجِدَ الْمَاءَ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، تَذْكُرُ إِذْ كُنَّا بِمَكَانِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَنَحْنُ نَرْعَى الْإِبِلَ، فَتَذَاكَرْنَا أَنَّا أَجْنَبْنَا، قَالَ: قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَإِنِّي تَمَرَّغْتُ بِالتُّرَابِ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ حَدَّثْتُهُ، فَضَحِكَ، وَقَالَ: إِذْ كَانَ الصَّعِيدُ لَكَافِيَكَ، وَضَرَبَ بِكَفَّيْهِ الْأَرْضَ، ثُمَّ نَفَخَ فِيهِمَا، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ وَبَعْضَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: اتَّقِ اللهَ يَا عَمَّارُ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، إِنْ شِئْتَ لَمْ أَذْكُرْهُ مَا حَيِيتُ، فَقَالَ: لَا، وَلَكِنْ نُوَلِّيكَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا تَوَلَّيْتَ
✧ We were with 'Umar when a man came to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, we remain for a month or two without finding water. 'Umar said: As for me, I would not pray until I found water. 'Ammar said: O Commander of the Faithful, do you remember when we were at such-and-such a place and we were pasturing the camels, and we recalled that we had become ritually impure? He said: He said: Yes. I rolled in the dust, then I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, and he laughed and said: Clean earth would have sufficed you, and he struck the ground with his two palms, then blew into them, then wiped his face and part of his forearms. He said: Fear Allah, O 'Ammar. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you wish, I will never mention it as long as I live. He said: No, but we will entrust you with as much of it as you have undertaken.

سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ عُمَرَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَجْنَبْتُ فَلَمْ أَجِدِ الْمَاءَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا تُصَلِّ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: أَمَا تَذْكُرُ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَجْنَبْنَا، فَأَمَّا أَنْتَ فَلَمْ تُصَلِّ، وَأَمَّا أَنَا فَتَمَعَّكْتُ فَصَلَّيْتُ، فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ، فَضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ الْأَرْضَ ضَرْبَةً فَنَفَخَ فِي كَفَّيْهِ، وَمَسَحَ بِوَجْهِهِ وَكَفَّيْهِ
✧ A man asked 'Umar, saying: I became ritually impure and did not find water. He said: Do not pray. 'Ammar said: Do you not remember that you and I were in a military expedition in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we became ritually impure? As for you, you did not pray, and as for me, I rolled in the dust and prayed. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said: It would have sufficed you, and he struck the ground once with his hand, then blew into his palms and wiped his face and his two palms.

رَأَيْتُ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ يَوْمَ الصِّفِّينِ شَيْخًا، طُوَالًا، آدَمَ، آخِذًا الْحَرْبَةَ بِيَدِهِ، وَيَدُهُ تَرْعَدُ، فَقَالَ: وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ قَاتَلْتُ بِهَذِهِ الرَّايَةِ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، وَهَذِهِ الرَّابِعَةُ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ ضَرَبُونَا حَتَّى بَلَغُوا بِنَا شَعَفَاتِ هَجَرَ لَعَرَفْنَا أَنَّ مُصْلِحِينَا عَلَى الْحَقِّ، وَإِنَّهُمْ عَلَى الضَّلَالَةِ
✧ I saw 'Ammar b. Yasir on the day of Siffin, an old man, tall, dark-skinned, holding the spear in his hand while his hand trembled. He said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, I fought with this banner alongside the Messenger of God ﷺ three times, and this is the fourth. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if they were to strike us until they drove us to the peaks of Hajar, we would know that our righteous ones are upon the truth and that they are upon misguidance.

مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَسْقِي نَاقَةً لِي، فَتَنَخَّمْتُ، فَأَصَابَتْ نُخَامَتِي ثَوْبِي، فَأَقْبَلْتُ أَغْسِلُ ثَوْبِي مِنَ الرَّكْوَةِ الَّتِي بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: يَا عَمَّارُ، مَا نُخَامَتُكَ وَلَا دُمُوعُ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَّا بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْمَاءِ الَّذِي فِي رَكْوَتِكَ، إِنَّمَا تَغْسِلُ ثَوْبَكَ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ وَالْغَائِطِ وَالْمَنِيِّ مِنَ الْمَاءِ الْأَعْظَمِ وَالدَّمِ وَالْقَيْءِ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by me while I was watering a she-camel of mine. I spat, and my spittle fell on my garment. I began washing my garment from the water-skin that was in front of me. The Prophet ﷺ said: O 'Ammar, your spittle and the tears of your eyes are only like the water in your water-skin. You only wash your garment from urine, feces, semen, from major water, blood, and vomit.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَهُ عَنْ أَكْلِ الْأَرْنَبِ ؟ فَقَالَ: ادْعُ لِيَ عَمَّارًا، فَجَاءَ عَمَّارٌ، فَقَالَ: حَدِّثْنَا حَدِيثَ الْأَرْنَبِ يَوْمَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي مَوْضِعِ كَذَا وَكَذَا. فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: أَهْدَى أَعْرَابِيٌّ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْنَبًا، فَأَمَرَ الْقَوْمَ أَنْ يَأْكُلُوا، فَقَالَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ دَمًا، فَقَالَ: لَيْسَ بِشَيْءٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ادْنُ فَكُلْ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي صَائِمٌ، فَقَالَ: صَوْمُ مَاذَا ؟ قَالَ: أَصُومُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، قَالَ: فَهَلَّا جَعَلْتَهَا الْبِيضَ ؟
✧ A man asked him about eating hare. He said: Call 'Ammar for me. 'Ammar came, and he said: Tell us the hadith of the hare on the day when we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ in such-and-such a place. 'Ammar said: A bedouin gave a hare as a gift to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he ordered the people to eat. A bedouin said: I saw blood. He said: It is nothing. Then he said: Come closer and eat. He said: I am fasting. He said: Fasting what? He said: I fast three days every month. He said: Why did you not make them the white days?

✧ A drink of milk was brought to 'Ammar, and he laughed. It was said to him: What makes you laugh? He said: The Prophet ﷺ said: The last drink you will drink is milk when you die.

✧ 'Ammar fell ill with an illness that became severe, and he lost consciousness. He regained consciousness while we were weeping around him. He said: What makes you weep? Do you fear that I will die on my bed?

أَنَّ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ: يَا أَبَا الْيَقْظَانِ، أَرَاكَ قَدْ خَفَّفْتَهُمَا، قَالَ: إِنِّي بَادَرْتُ بِهِمَا الْوَسْوَاسَ، إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُصَلِّي الصَّلَاةَ لَعَلَّهُ أَنْ لَا يَكُونَ لَهُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا عُشْرُهَا، أَوْ تُسْعُهَا، أَوْ ثُمُنُهَا، أَوْ سُبُعُهَا، أَوْ سُدُسُهَا، أَوْ خُمُسُهَا، حَتَّى أَتَى عَلَى الْعَدَدِ
✧ 'Ammar b. Yasir prayed two rak'ahs, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith said to him: O Abu al-Yaqzan, I see you have made them light. He said: I hurried through them to avoid distraction. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: A man may pray a prayer and perhaps he gets only a tenth of it, or a ninth, or an eighth, or a seventh, or a sixth, or a fifth—until he reached the end of the count.

✧ I said to 'Ammar b. Yasir: Do you consider your fighting a matter of opinion that you yourselves held—for opinion can err and be right—or a covenant that the Messenger of God ﷺ entrusted to you? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ did not entrust to us anything that he did not entrust to all the people. And he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ—Shu'bah said: I think he said—

✧ 'Ammar and 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud began discussing tayammum. 'Abd Allah said: If I remained for a month without finding water, I would not pray. 'Ammar said to him: Do you not remember when you and I were with the camels, and I became ritually impure, and you rolled in the dust like an animal rolls? When I returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him what I had done, he said: Tayammum would have sufficed you.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us and said: 'Which day is this?' We said: 'The Day of Sacrifice.' He said: 'Which month is this?' We said: 'Dhu al-Hijjah, a sacred month.' He said: 'Which land is this?' We said: 'The Sacred Land.' He said: 'Indeed your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Indeed, let the one present convey to the one absent.'

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ عَمَّارٍ، وَكَانَ يَدْعُو بِدُعَاءٍ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَمَّارٌ قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ بِعِلْمِكَ الْغَيْبَ، وَقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَى الْخَلْقِ، أَحْيِنِي مَا عَلِمْتَ الْحَيَاةَ خَيْرًا لِي، وَاقْبِضْنِي إِذَا عَلِمْتَ الْوَفَاةَ خَيْرًا لِي، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْخَشْيَةَ فِي الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ، وَكَلِمَةَ الْحَقِّ فِي الرِّضَا وَالْغَضَبِ، وَالْقَصْدَ فِي الْغِنَى وَالْفَقْرِ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ الرِّضَا بَعْدَ الْقَضَاءِ، وَبَرْدَ الْعَيْشِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ شَوْقًا إِلَى لِقَائِكَ مِنْ غَيْرِ ضَرَّاءَ مُضِرَّةٍ، وَلَا فِتْنَةٍ مُضِلَّةٍ، اللَّهُمَّ زَيِّنِّي بِزِينَةِ الْإِيمَانِ، وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْهُدَاةِ الْمُهْتَدِينَ 24 - ( 1625 ) - ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ هُنَّ أَحْسَنُ مِنْهُنَّ ؟ كَأَنَّهُ يَرْفَعُهُنَّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، قَالَ: إِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَقُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الْمُنَزَّلِ، وَنَبِيِّكَ الْمُرْسَلِ، إِنَّ نَفْسِي نَفْسٌ خَلَقْتَهَا، لَكَ مَحْيَاهَا، وَلَكَ مَمَاتُهَا، فَإِنْ كَفَتَّهَا فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَخَّرْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِحِفْظِ الْإِيمَانِ
✧ I was with 'Ammar, and he was making a supplication in his prayer. A man came to him, and 'Ammar said to him: 'Say: O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive as long as You know life is better for me, and take my soul when You know death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You for fear of You in secret and in public, the word of truth in pleasure and anger, moderation in wealth and poverty, and I ask You for contentment after Your decree, and a pleasant life after death. I ask You for longing to meet You without harmful adversity or misleading trial. O Allah, adorn me with the adornment of faith, and make me one of the guides who are rightly guided.' 24 - (1625) - Then he said: 'Shall I not teach you words that are better than those?' As if he was raising them to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: 'When you go to your bed at night, say: O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affair to You, believed in Your revealed Book and Your sent Prophet. My soul is a soul You created; to You belongs its life and its death. If You take it, have mercy on it, and if You delay it, protect it with the protection of faith.'

✧ On the day of Siffin, 'Ammar fought but was not killed. He would come to 'Ali and say: 'O Commander of the Faithful, is this not such-and-such a day?' He would say: 'Go away from me.' He said that several times. Then milk was brought and he drank it. 'Ammar said: 'This is the last drink I will drink from this world.' Then he advanced and fought until he was killed.

✧ Part of the fitrah is rinsing the mouth, sniffing water into the nose, trimming the mustache, using the siwak, washing the knuckles, plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubic hair, circumcision, and washing the private parts with water.

✧ 'Ammar prayed, and a man said to him: 'You have made the prayer light, O Abu al-Yaqzan.' He said: 'Did you see me omit anything from its limits? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: A man prays and then leaves, and only half of it is recorded for him, or a third, a quarter, a fifth, a sixth, a seventh, an eighth, a ninth, a tenth.'

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَرَّسَ بِذَاتِ الْجَيْشِ وَمَعَهُ عَائِشَةُ زَوْجَتُهُ، فَانْقَطَعَ عِقْدٌ لَهَا مِنْ جَزْعِ ظَفَارِ، فَحُبِسَ النَّاسُ ابْتِغَاءَ عِقْدِهَا ذَلِكَ حَتَّى أَضَاءَ الْفَجْرُ، وَلَيْسَ مَعَ النَّاسِ مَاءٌ، فَتَغَيَّظَ عَلَيْهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَقَالَ: حَبَسْتِ النَّاسَ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمْ مَاءٌ ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى رَسُولِهِ رُخْصَةَ التَّطْهِيرِ بِالصَّعِيدِ الطَّيِّبِ، فَقَامَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَضَرَبُوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَرَفَعُوا أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَلَمْ يَقْبِضُوا مِنَ التُّرَابِ شَيْئًا، فَمَسَحُوا بِهَا وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَيْدِيَهُمْ إِلَى الْمَنَاكِبِ، وَمِنْ بَطْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ إِلَى الْآبَاطِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped for the night at Dhat al-Jaysh, and with him was his wife 'A'ishah. A necklace of hers made of Dhafar onyx broke, and the people were detained seeking that necklace until dawn broke, and the people had no water. Abu Bakr became angry with her and said: 'You have detained the people and they have no water.' Then Allah, exalted is He, sent down upon His Messenger the concession of purification with clean earth. The Muslims stood with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, struck their hands on the ground, raised their hands without taking any dust, and wiped their faces and hands up to the shoulders, and from the palms of their hands to the armpits.

✧ I arrived at my family at night from a journey, and my hands had become chapped, so they smeared me with saffron. Then I went in the morning to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I greeted him, but he did not respond to me, nor did he welcome me. He said: 'Go and wash this off yourself.' So I went and washed it off, then I came and greeted him, and he responded to me and welcomed me. He said: 'The angels do not attend the funeral of a disbeliever with good, nor that of one smeared with saffron, nor of a ritually impure person.' And he gave a concession for the ritually impure person, if he wants to sleep, or eat, or drink, to perform ablution.

✧ "O Abu Musa, I adjure you by God: did you not hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire'? I am asking you about a hadith, and if you tell the truth, good, otherwise I will send against you some of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ to press you. Then I adjure you by God: was it not that the Messenger of God ﷺ meant you specifically by himself? He said: 'There will be a tribulation in my community, in which you, O Abu Musa, asleep will be better than you sitting, and one sitting will be better than you standing, and one standing will be better than you walking.' So the Messenger of God ﷺ singled you out and did not generalize the people?" So Abu Musa went out and did not answer him anything.

✧ Ammar b. Yasir delivered a sermon to us, and he was brief and eloquent. When he came down, we said: "O Abu al-Yaqzan, you have been eloquent and brief; would that you had paused for breath?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Indeed, the length of a man's prayer and the shortness of his sermon is an indication of his understanding, so lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermons, and indeed there is magic in eloquence.'"

✧ I have not forgotten the Day of the Trench when he was passing milk to them, and his hair had become dusty—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—and he was saying: 'Indeed, the best good is the good of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajirun.' Then Ammar came, and he [the Prophet] said: 'Woe to you, or woe upon you'—Khalid was uncertain—'O Ibn Sumayya, the transgressing group will kill you.'

✧ The table was sent down from heaven as bread and meat. They were commanded not to betray or store for tomorrow, but they betrayed, stored, and lifted, and were transformed into apes and pigs.

تَيَمَّمْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَمَسَحْنَا وُجُوهَنَا وَأَيْدِيَنَا إِلَى الْمَنَاكِبِ بِالتُّرَابِ
✧ We performed tayammum with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and wiped our faces and hands up to the shoulders with dust.

إِنَّ الْحَلَالَ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامَ بَيِّنٌ، وَبَيْنَهُمَا شُبُهَاتٌ، مَنْ تَوَقَّاهُنَّ كُنَّ وِقَاءً لِدِينِهِ، وَمَنْ يُوقَعُ فِيهِنَّ يُوشِكُ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَ الْكَبَائِرَ كَالْمُرْتِعِ حَوْلَ الْحِمَى يُوشِكُ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَهُ، لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى
✧ Indeed, the lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters. Whoever guards against them safeguards his religion, and whoever falls into them is likely to fall into major sins, like a shepherd grazing around a sanctuary who is likely to graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary.
