✧ His father wrote to him while he was in Sijistan: Do not judge between two men while you are angry, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'No man should judge between two men, or between two adversaries, while he is angry.'

✧ He said: 'Do you think that if Muzayna, Juhayna, Aslam, and Ghifar were better than Banu Tamim, Asad, Ghatafan, and Banu Amir b. Sa'sa'a, they would be losers and failures? By Him in Whose hand is my soul, they are better than them.'

ذُكِرَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِلرَّجُلِ: وَيْحَكَ قَطَعْتَ عُنُقَ صَاحِبِكَ - قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ مَادِحًا أَخَاهُ لَا مَحَالَةَ فَلْيَقُلْ: أَحْسَبُ فُلَانًا - إِنْ كَانَ يَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ - وَلَا أُزَكِّي عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحَدًا
✧ A man was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and they praised him highly. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to the man: 'Woe to you, you have cut off your companion's neck' - he said it three times. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'If one of you must praise his brother, let him say: "I consider So-and-so" - if he knows that about him - "and I do not declare anyone pure before God, Mighty and Majestic."'

" يَمْكُثُ أَبَوَا الدَّجَّالِ ثَلَاثِينَ عَامًا لَا يُولَدُ لَهُمَا، ثُمَّ يُولَدُ لَهُمَا غُلَامٌ أَعْوَرُ أَضَرُّ شَيْءٍ وَأَقَلُّهُ نَفْعًا، تَنَامُ عَيْنَاهُ وَلَا يَنَامُ قَلْبُهُ "، قَالَ: وَنَعَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَبَاهُ؛ رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ ضَرْبُ اللَّحْمِ كَأَنَّ أَنْفَهُ مِنْقَارٌ، وَأَمَّا أُمُّهُ فَامْرَأَةٌ طَوِيلَةٌ ضَاحِيَةُ الثَّدْيِ "، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ: فَسَمِعْنَا بِمَوْلُودٍ وُلِدَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فِي الْيَهُودِ، فَذَهَبْتُ أَنَا وَالزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ الْعَوَّامِ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَبَوَيْهِ فَإِذَا نَعْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهِمَا، فَقُلْنَا: هَلْ لَكُمَا مَنْ وَلَدٍ ؟ فَقَالَا: مَكَثْنَا ثَلَاثِينَ عَامًا لَا يُولَدُ لَنَا، ثُمَّ وُلِدَ لَنَا وَلَدٌ أَضَرُّ شَيْءٍ وَأَقَلُّهُ نَفْعًا، تَنَامُ عَيْنَاهُ وَلَا يَنَامُ قَلْبُهُ، فَخَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِمَا فَإِذَا هُوَ مُنْجَدِلٌ فِي قَطِيفَةٍ فِي الشَّمْسِ لَهُ هَمْهَمَةٌ، فَكَشَفَ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ فَقَالَ: مَا قُلْتُمَا ؟ قُلْنَا: أَوَسَمِعْتَ ؟ قَالَ: إِنِّي أَنَامُ وَلَا يَنَامُ قَلْبِي
✧ 'The parents of the Dajjal remain for thirty years without having a child, then a boy is born to them, one-eyed, the most harmful of things and the least beneficial. His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep.' He said: And the Messenger of God ﷺ described his father: a tall man with flabby flesh, as if his nose were a beak. As for his mother, a tall woman with prominent breasts. Abu Bakra said: We heard of a newborn born in Madinah among the Jews, so I and al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam went and entered upon his parents, and found the description of the Messenger of God ﷺ in them. We said: 'Do you have any children?' They said: 'We remained thirty years without having a child, then a child was born to us, the most harmful of things and the least beneficial. His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep.' We went out from them and found him lying wrapped in a velvet cloth in the sun, murmuring. He uncovered his head and said: 'What did you say?' We said: 'Did you hear?' He said: 'I sleep but my heart does not sleep.'

وَفَدْنَا إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ مَعَ زِيَادٍ وَمَعَنَا أَبُو بَكْرَةَ، فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ: حَدِّثْنَا حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَسَى اللهُ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا بِهِ، قَالَ: نَعَمْ، كَانَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ تُعْجِبُهُ الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ وَيَسْأَلُ عَنْهَا "، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رُؤْيَا، رَأَيْتُ كَأَنَّ مِيزَانًا دُلِّيَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَوُزِنْتَ أَنْتَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ فَرَجَحْتَ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ وُزِنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِعُمَرَ فَوَزَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عُمَرَ، ثُمَّ وُزِنَ عُمَرُ بِعُثْمَانَ فَرَجَحَ عُمَرُ بِعُثْمَانَ، ثُمَّ رُفِعَ الْمِيزَانُ ! فَاسْتَاءَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: خِلَافَةُ نُبُوَّةٍ، ثُمَّ يُؤْتِي اللهُ الْمُلْكَ مَنْ يَشَاءُ، فَغَضِبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ وَزُخَّ فِي أَقْفَائِنَا فَأُخْرِجْنَا، فَقَالَ زِيَادٌ لِأَبِي بَكْرَةَ: مَا وَجَدْتَ مِنْ حَدِيثِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَدِيثًا تُحَدِّثُهُ غَيْرَ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: وَاللهِ لَا أُحَدِّثُهُ إِلَّا بِهِ حَتَّى أُفَارِقَهُ. قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَزَلْ زِيَادٌ يَطْلُبُ الْإِذْنَ حَتَّى أُذِنَ لَنَا فَأُدْخِلْنَا، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: يَا أَبَا بَكْرَةَ، حَدِّثْنَا بِحَدِيثٍ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا بِهِ ! قَالَ: فَحَدَّثْتُهُ أَيْضًا بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِهِ الْأَوَّلِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ: لَا أَبَا لَكَ، تُخْبِرُنَا أَنَّا مُلُوكٌ ! فَقَدْ رَضِينَا أَنْ نَكُونَ مُلُوكًا
✧ We came as a delegation to Mu'awiya with Ziyad, and with us was Abu Bakra. We entered upon him, and Mu'awiya said to him: 'Narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, perhaps God will benefit us by it.' He said: 'Yes. The Prophet of God ﷺ used to like good dreams and ask about them.' A man said: 'O Messenger of God, I saw a dream. I saw as if a scale was suspended from heaven, and you and Abu Bakr were weighed, and you outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr was weighed against Umar, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar. Then Umar was weighed against Uthman, and Umar outweighed Uthman. Then the scale was raised!' The Messenger of God ﷺ was upset by it, then said: 'A caliphate of prophethood, then God gives kingship to whomever He wills.' Mu'awiya became angry and shoved us by the napes of our necks, so we were expelled. Ziyad said to Abu Bakra: 'Could you not find any hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ to narrate other than this?' He said: 'By God, I will not narrate anything but this until I part from him.' He said: Ziyad kept seeking permission until we were granted permission and admitted. Mu'awiya said: 'O Abu Bakra, narrate to us a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ, perhaps God will benefit us by it.' He said: I narrated to him again the like of his first hadith. Mu'awiya said to him: 'May your father perish! You tell us that we are kings! We are content to be kings.'

بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَعِي رَجُلٌ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْشِي بَيْنَنَا إِذْ أَتَى عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ صَاحِبَيْ هَذَيْنِ الْقَبْرَيْنِ لَيُعَذَّبَانِ الْآنَ فِي قُبُورِهِمَا، فَأَيُّكُمَا يَأْتِينِي مِنْ هَذَا النَّخْلِ بِعَسِيبٍ ؟ "، فَاسْتَبَقْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبِي فَسَبَقْتُهُ وَكَسَرْتُ مِنَ النَّخْلِ عَسِيبًا، فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَشَقَّهُ نِصْفَيْنِ مِنْ أَعْلَاهُ، فَوَضَعَ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمَا نِصْفًا وَعَلَى الْآخَرِ نِصْفًا، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّهُ يُهَوَّنُ عَلَيْهِمَا مَا دَامَ فِيهِمَا مِنْ بُلُولَتِهِمَا شَيْءٌ، إِنَّهُمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي الْغِيبَةِ وَالْبَوْلِ
✧ While I was walking with the Messenger of God ﷺ and with me was a man, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was walking between us, he came upon two graves. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The occupants of these two graves are being punished right now in their graves. Which of you will bring me a palm branch from this palm tree?' My companion and I raced, and I beat him and broke a palm branch from the tree and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ. He split it into two halves from its top and placed one half on one grave and the other half on the other, and said: 'It will be lightened for them as long as there is any moisture in them. They are being punished for backbiting and urine.'

يَا أَبَهْ، إِنِّي أَسْمَعُكَ تَدْعُو عِنْدَ كُلِّ غَدَاةٍ اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ "، تُعِيدُهَا ثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُمْسِي وَثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ، وَتَقُولُ: " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ "، تُعِيدُهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ حِينَ تُمْسِي وَثَلَاثًا حِينَ تُصْبِحُ ! فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ يَا بُنَيَّ؛ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَدْعُو بِهِنَّ، فَأَنَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَسْتَنَّ بِسُنَّتِهِ
✧ O father, I hear you supplicate every morning: 'O God, grant me well-being in my body; O God, grant me well-being in my hearing; O God, grant me well-being in my sight; there is no god but You,' repeating it three times in the evening and three times in the morning. And you say: 'O God, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty; O God, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave; there is no god but You,' repeating it three times in the evening and three times in the morning. He said: 'Yes, my son. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ supplicate with these, so I like to follow his practice.'

" لَتَنْزِلَنَّ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَرْضًا يُقَالُ لَهَا الْبَصْرَةُ وَيَكْثُرُ بِهَا عَدَدُهُمْ وَنَخْلُهُمْ، ثُمَّ تَجِيءُ بَنُو قَنْطُورَاءَ عِرَاضُ الْوُجُوهِ صِغَارُ الْعُيُونِ حَتَّى يَنْزِلُوا عَلَى جِسْرٍ لَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهَا دِجْلَةُ، فَيَتَفَرَّقُ الْمُسْلِمُونَ ثَلَاثَ فِرَقٍ؛ أَمَّا فِرْقَةٌ فَتَأْخُذُ بِأَذْنَابِ الْإِبِلِ فَتَلْحَقُ بِالْبَادِيَةِ فَهَلَكَتْ، وَأَمَّا فِرْقَةٌ فَتَأْخُذُ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهَا وَكَفَرَتْ، فَهَذِهِ وَتِلْكَ سَوَاءٌ، وَأَمَّا فِرْقَةٌ فَيَجْعَلُونَ عِيَالَاتِهِمْ خَلْفَ ظُهُورِهِمْ وَيُقَاتِلُونَ، فَقَتْلَاهُمْ شَهِيدٌ، وَيَفْتَحُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى بَقِيَّتِهِمْ
✧ 'A group of my nation will certainly descend upon a land called al-Basra, and their number and palm trees will increase there. Then Banu Qantura' will come, broad-faced, small-eyed, until they descend upon a bridge of theirs called Dijla. The Muslims will split into three factions: as for one faction, they will take hold of the tails of camels and join the desert, and they will perish; as for another faction, they will take their own souls and disbelieve, so this one and that one are equal; as for another faction, they will place their families behind their backs and fight, and their slain are martyrs, and God, Mighty and Majestic, will grant victory to the rest of them.'

أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرَةَ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي شَهَادَةٍ، فَقَامَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنْ مَجْلِسِهِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: إِذَا قَامَ لَكَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ فَلَا تَجْلِسْ فِيهِ - أَوْ قَالَ: لَا تُقِيمُ رَجُلًا مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ ثُمَّ تَجْلِسُ فِيهِ - وَلَا تَمْسَحُ يَدَكَ بِثَوْبِ مَنْ لَا تَمْلِكُ
✧ Abu Bakrah entered upon them to give testimony, and a man stood up for him from his seat. Abu Bakrah said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'If a man stands up for you from his seat, do not sit in it'—or he said: 'You should not make a man stand up from his seat and then sit in it'—'and do not wipe your hand with the garment of one you do not own.'

صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ الْحَسَنُ فَرَكِبَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ فَوَضَعَهُ وَضْعًا رَفِيقًا، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ ضَمَّهُ إِلَيْهِ وَقَبَّلَهُ، فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، صَنَعْتَ بِالْحَسَنِ شَيْئًا لَمْ تَكُنْ تَصْنَعُهُ ! فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ ابْنِي هَذَا سَيِّدٌ؛ سَيُصْلِحُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهِ بَيْنَ فِئَتَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ was praying when al-Hasan came and climbed onto his back, so he placed him down gently. When he finished his prayer, he embraced him and kissed him. They said: 'O Messenger of God, you did with al-Hasan something you had not done before!' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'This son of mine is a chief; through him God, Mighty and Majestic, will reconcile two factions of the Muslims.'

✧ The Prophet ﷺ delayed the evening prayer for eight nights. Abu Bakrah said: 'If you were to hasten this prayer, it would be better for our standing in prayer at night!' And he did so.

✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ out of breath, and bowed before reaching the row. When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he said: 'Who did this?' Abu Bakrah said: 'I did.' He said: 'May God increase you in eagerness, but do not do it again.'

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ " صَلَّى بِأَصْحَابِهِ صَلَاةَ الْخَوْفِ، فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ هَؤُلَاءِ إِلَى مَصَافِّ هَؤُلَاءِ وَجَاءَ أُولَئِكَ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَكَانَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعًا وَلِلْقَوْمِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ led his companions in the fear prayer: he prayed two rakʿahs, then these went to the positions of those, and those came and he prayed two rakʿahs with them. Thus the Messenger of God ﷺ had four and the people had two rakʿahs each.

" مَنْ قَتَلَ مُعَاهَدًا فِي غَيْرِ كُنْهِهِ حَرَّمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَنَّةَ
✧ Whoever kills a muʿāhad without just cause, God has forbidden Paradise to him.

" مَا مِنْ ذَنْبٍ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ يُعَجَّلَ لِصَاحِبِهِ الْعُقُوبَةُ فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعَ مَا يُدَّخَرُ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْبَغْيِ وَقَطِيعَةِ الرَّحِمِ
✧ There is no sin more deserving that its punishment be hastened for its doer in this world, along with what is stored up for him in the Hereafter, than injustice and severing ties of kinship.

ذُكِرَ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ عِنْدَ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَلَسْتُ مُلْتَمِسَهَا إِلَّا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ بَعْدَ حَدِيثٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؛ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: الْتَمِسُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ؛ لِتَاسِعَةٍ تَبْقَى، أَوْ سَابِعَةٍ تَبْقَى، أَوْ خَامِسَةٍ تَبْقَى، أَوْ ثَالِثَةٍ تَبْقَى، أَوْ آخِرِ لَيْلَةٍ "، فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ يُصَلِّي فِي عِشْرِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ كَمَا كَانَ يُصَلِّي فِي سَائِرِ السَّنَةِ، فَإِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ اجْتَهَدَ
✧ The Night of Decree was mentioned in the presence of Abu Bakrah. Abu Bakrah said: As for me, I seek it only in the last ten, based on a hadith I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. I heard him say: 'Seek it in the last ten: on the ninth remaining, or the seventh remaining, or the fifth remaining, or the third remaining, or the last night.' And Abu Bakrah used to pray during the first twenty days of Ramadan as he prayed the rest of the year, but when the last ten entered, he exerted himself.

كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ يُنْتَبَذُ لَهُ فِي جَرٍّ، فَقَدِمَ أَبُو بَرْزَةَ مِنْ غَيْبَةٍ كَانَ غَابَهَا فَنَزَلَ بِمَنْزِلِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ مَنْزِلَهُ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ أَبَا بَكْرَةَ فِي مَنْزِلِهِ، فَوَقَفَ عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهَا مَيْسَةُ، فَسَأَلَهَا عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ وَعَنْ حَالِهِ، وَنَظَرَ فَأَبْصَرَ الْجَرَّةَ الَّتِي فِيهَا النَّبِيذُ، فَقَالَ: مَا فِي هَذِهِ الْجَرَّةِ ؟ قَالَتْ: نَبِيذٌ لِأَبِي بَكْرَةَ، فَقَالَ: لَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكِ جَعَلْتِيهِ فِي سِقَاءٍ ! ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَأَمَرَتْ بِالنَّبِيذِ فَحُوِّلَ فِي سِقَاءٍ ثُمَّ عَلَّقَتْهُ، فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ عَنْ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ وَعَنْ قُدُومِهِ، ثُمَّ أَبْصَرَ السِّقَاءَ فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا السِّقَاءُ ؟ فَقَالَتْ: قَالَ أَبُو بَرْزَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَحَوَّلْتُ نَبِيذَكَ فِي السِّقَاءِ. فَقَالَ: مَا أَنَا بِشَارِبٍ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، آللهِ إِنْ جَعَلْتِ الْعَسَلَ فِي جَرٍّ لَيَحْرُمَنَّ عَلَيَّ، وَلَئِنْ جَعَلْتِ الْخَمْرَ فِي سِقَاءٍ لَيَحِلَّنَّ لِي، إِنَّا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا الَّذِي نُهِينَا عَنْهُ، " نُهِينَا عَنِ الدُّبَّاءِ وَالنَّقِيرِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَالْمُزَفَّتِ "؛ فَأَمَّا الدُّبَّاءُ فَإِنَّا مَعْشَرَ ثَقِيفَ بِالطَّائِفِ كُنَّا نَأْخُذُ الدُّبَّاءَ فَنَخْرُطُ فِيهَا عَنَاقِيدَ الْعِنَبِ ثُمَّ نَدْفِنُهَا، ثُمَّ نَتْرُكُهَا حَتَّى تَهْدِرَ ثُمَّ تَمُوتَ، وَأَمَّا النَّقِيرُ فَإِنَّ أَهْلَ الْيَمَامَةِ كَانُوا يَنْقُرُونَ أَصْلَ النَّخْلَةِ فَيَشْدَخُونَ فِيهِ الرُّطَبَ وَالْبُسْرَ، ثُمَّ يَدَعُونَهُ حَتَّى يَهْدِرَ ثُمَّ يَمُوتَ، وَأَمَّا الْحَنْتَمُ فَجِرَارٌ كَانَ يُحْمَلُ إِلَيْنَا فِيهَا الْخَمْرُ، وَأَمَّا الْمُزَفَّتُ فَهِيَ هَذِهِ الْأَوْعِيَةُ الَّتِي فِيهَا هَذَا الزِّفْتُ
✧ Nabīdh was steeped for Abu Bakrah in a clay jar. Abu Barzah returned from an absence and stopped at Abu Bakrah's house before going to his own home. He did not find Abu Bakrah in his house, so he stood before a woman of his named Maysah and asked her about Abu Bakrah and his condition. He looked and saw the jar containing the nabīdh, and said: 'What is in this jar?' She said: 'Nabīdh for Abu Bakrah.' He said: 'I wish you had put it in a waterskin.' Then he left, and she ordered that the nabīdh be transferred to a waterskin and hung it up. Abu Bakrah came and she told him about Abu Barzah and his arrival. Then he noticed the waterskin and said: 'What is this waterskin?' She said: 'Abu Barzah said such and such, so I transferred your nabīdh to the waterskin.' He said: 'I will not drink any of it. By God, if you put honey in a jar it would be forbidden to me, and if you put wine in a waterskin it would be lawful for me. We have known what we were forbidden: we were forbidden from the dubbaʾ, the naqīr, the ḥantam, and the muzaffat. As for the dubbaʾ, we, the tribe of Thaqīf in al-Ṭāʾif, used to take gourds, hollow them out, and place bunches of grapes in them, then bury them and leave them until they fermented and then died down. As for the naqīr, the people of al-Yamāmah used to hollow out the trunk of a palm tree and crush ripe and unripe dates in it, then leave it until it fermented and then died down. As for the ḥantam, they were jars in which wine used to be brought to us. As for the muzaffat, they are these vessels that have this pitch in them.'

كُنْتُ فِي جِنَازَةِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، فَجَعَلَ زِيَادٌ وَرِجَالٌ مِنْ مَوَالِيهِ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ أَمَامَ السَّرِيرِ يَقُولُونَ: رُوَيْدًا رُوَيْدًا بَارَكَ اللهُ فِيكُمْ ! قَالَ: فَلَحِقَهُمْ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ فِي بَعْضِ سِكَّةِ الْمِرْبَدِ فَحَمَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْبَغْلَةَ وَشَدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ بِالسَّوْطِ، وَقَالَ: خَلُّوا وَالَّذِي أَكْرَمَ وَجْهَ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَنَكَادُ أَنْ نَرْمُلَ بِهَا رَمَلًا
✧ I was at the funeral of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samura, and Ziyād and men from his clients were walking on their heels in front of the bier, saying: "Gently, gently, may Allah bless you!" He said: Abū Bakra caught up with them in one of the alleys of al-Mirbad, and he charged at them on the mule and struck at them with the whip, and said: "Let go, by the One who honored the face of Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ, I have seen us in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ almost trotting with it."

✧ "If a man points a weapon at his brother, they are both on the edge of Hell, and if he kills him, they both fall into it together."

✧ "Whoever claims descent from someone other than his father, while knowing that he is not his father, Paradise is forbidden to him."

✧ On the authority of Abū Bakra regarding His saying: 'A throng from the former generations, and a throng from the latter generations' (Q 56:39–40), he said: "Both of them are from this community."

خَرَجَ ابْنُ عَامِرٍ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابٌ رِقَاقٌ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بِلَالٍ: انْظُرُوا إِلَى أَمِيرِكُمْ يَلْبَسُ لِبَاسَ الْفُسَّاقِ ! فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرَةَ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْمِنْبَرِ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَهَانَ سُلْطَانَ اللهِ أَهَانَهُ اللهُ
✧ Ibn ʿĀmir went out and ascended the minbar wearing thin clothes, and Abū Bilāl said: "Look at your amir wearing the clothing of the wicked!" Abū Bakra said from beneath the minbar: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Whoever humiliates the authority of Allah, Allah will humiliate him.'"
