✧ Nabīdh was steeped for Abu Bakrah in a clay jar. Abu Barzah returned from an absence and stopped at Abu Bakrah's house before going to his own home. He did not find Abu Bakrah in his house, so he stood before a woman of his named Maysah and asked her about Abu Bakrah and his condition. He looked and saw the jar containing the nabīdh, and said: 'What is in this jar?' She said: 'Nabīdh for Abu Bakrah.' He said: 'I wish you had put it in a waterskin.' Then he left, and she ordered that the nabīdh be transferred to a waterskin and hung it up. Abu Bakrah came and she told him about Abu Barzah and his arrival. Then he noticed the waterskin and said: 'What is this waterskin?' She said: 'Abu Barzah said such and such, so I transferred your nabīdh to the waterskin.' He said: 'I will not drink any of it. By God, if you put honey in a jar it would be forbidden to me, and if you put wine in a waterskin it would be lawful for me. We have known what we were forbidden: we were forbidden from the dubbaʾ, the naqīr, the ḥantam, and the muzaffat. As for the dubbaʾ, we, the tribe of Thaqīf in al-Ṭāʾif, used to take gourds, hollow them out, and place bunches of grapes in them, then bury them and leave them until they fermented and then died down. As for the naqīr, the people of al-Yamāmah used to hollow out the trunk of a palm tree and crush ripe and unripe dates in it, then leave it until it fermented and then died down. As for the ḥantam, they were jars in which wine used to be brought to us. As for the muzaffat, they are these vessels that have this pitch in them.'
