Chain of narrators
- Abū Dāwud
- Ḥammād b. Salamah
- ʿAlī b. Zayd
- ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Abū Bakrah
✧ We came as a delegation to Mu'awiya with Ziyad, and with us was Abu Bakra. We entered upon him, and Mu'awiya said to him: 'Narrate to us a hadith you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, perhaps God will benefit us by it.' He said: 'Yes. The Prophet of God ﷺ used to like good dreams and ask about them.' A man said: 'O Messenger of God, I saw a dream. I saw as if a scale was suspended from heaven, and you and Abu Bakr were weighed, and you outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr was weighed against Umar, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar. Then Umar was weighed against Uthman, and Umar outweighed Uthman. Then the scale was raised!' The Messenger of God ﷺ was upset by it, then said: 'A caliphate of prophethood, then God gives kingship to whomever He wills.' Mu'awiya became angry and shoved us by the napes of our necks, so we were expelled. Ziyad said to Abu Bakra: 'Could you not find any hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ to narrate other than this?' He said: 'By God, I will not narrate anything but this until I part from him.' He said: Ziyad kept seeking permission until we were granted permission and admitted. Mu'awiya said: 'O Abu Bakra, narrate to us a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ, perhaps God will benefit us by it.' He said: I narrated to him again the like of his first hadith. Mu'awiya said to him: 'May your father perish! You tell us that we are kings! We are content to be kings.'
