   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no faraʿ and no ʿatīrah."

   ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade al-faraʿ and al-ʿatīrah." And the other said: "There is no faraʿ and no ʿatīrah."

   بَيْنَا نَحْنُ وُقُوفٌ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِعَرَفَةَ فَقَالَ «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ عَلَى أَهْلِ كُلِّ بَيْتٍ كُلَّ عَامٍ أَضْحَى وَعَتِيرَةً» قَالَ مُعَاذٌ كَانَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ يَعْتَرُّ أَبْصَرَتْهُ عَيْنِي فِي رَجَبٍ

   ✧ While we were standing with the Prophet ﷺ at ʿArafah, he said: “O people, upon the people of every household each year is (due) a sacrifice (uḍḥiyah) and an ʿatīrah.” Muʿādh said: Ibn ʿAwn used to offer an ʿatīrah; my own eyes saw him do it in Rajab.

   عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَزِيدَ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ الْفَرَعُ قَالَ «حَقٌّ وَأَنْ تَتْرُكَهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ بِكْرًا فَتَحْمِلُ عَلَيْهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَوْ تُعْطِيَهُ أَرْمَلَةً خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَذْبَحَهُ يَتَلَصَّقُ لَحْمُهُ بِوَبَرِهِ فَتُكْفِئَ إِنَاءَكَ وَتُوَلِّهِ نَاقَتَكَ» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَالْعَتِيرَةُ؟ قَالَ «الْعَتِيرَةُ حَقٌّ»

   ✧ From his father and Zayd b. Aslam, they said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about al-faraʿ?" He said: "It is a right. But to leave it until it becomes a firstborn, then you load it for the sake of Allah or give it to a widow, is better than to slaughter it while its flesh clings to its wool, and you upset your vessel and turn away your she-camel." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, and al-ʿatīrah?" He said: "Al-ʿatīrah is a right."

   أَنَّهُ لَقِيَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ وَهُوَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ الْعَضْبَاءِ فَأَتَيْتُهُ مِنْ أَحَدِ شِقَّيْهِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي فَقَالَ «غَفَرَ اللهُ لَكُمْ» ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ مِنَ الشِّقِّ الْآخَرِ أَرْجُو أَنْ يَخُصَّنِي دُونَهُمْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ «غَفَرَ اللهُ لَكُمْ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ الْعَتَائِرُ وَالْفَرَاعُ؟ فَقَالَ «مَنْ شَاءَ عَتَرَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يَعْتِرْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَرَّعَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يُفَرِّعْ فِي الْغَنَمِ أُضْحِيَّتُهَا» وَقَبَضَ أَصَابِعَهُ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةً

   ✧ He met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage while he was on his she-camel al-ʿAḍbāʾ. I came to him from one of his sides and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father be sacrificed for you, ask forgiveness for me." He said: "May Allah forgive you all." Then I came to him from the other side, hoping he would single me out instead of them, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me." He said, gesturing with his hand: "May Allah forgive you all." Then a man among the people said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about al-ʿatāʾir and al-farāʿ?" He said: "Whoever wishes may perform ʿatīrah, and whoever wishes may not. Whoever wishes may perform faraʿ, and whoever wishes may not. In sheep, it is its udhiyah." And he closed his fingers except one.

   أَنَّهُ لَقِيَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ فَقُلْتُ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي قَالَ «غَفَرَ اللهُ لَكُمْ» وَهُوَ عَلَى نَاقَتِهِ الْعَضْبَاءِ ثُمَّ اسْتَدَرْتُ مِنَ الشِّقِّ الْآخَرِ وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ

   ✧ He met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said: "May my father be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me." He said: "May Allah forgive you all," while he was on his she-camel al-ʿAḍbāʾ. Then I went around to the other side, and he related the hadith.

   ذَكَرَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَالَ اذْبَحُوا لِلَّهِ فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللهَ وَأَطْعِمُوا

   ✧ He mentioned the Prophet ﷺ and said: "We used to perform ʿatīrah in the pre-Islamic era." He said: "Slaughter for Allah in whatever month it may be, and do good to Allah and feed others."

   يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فِي رَجَبٍ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «اذْبَحُوا فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللهَ وَأَطْعِمُوا» قَالَ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُفَرِّعُ فَرَعًا فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ فَرَعٌ تَغْذُوهُ مَاشِيَتُكَ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَحْمَلَ ذَبَحْتَهُ فَتَصَدَّقْتَ بِلَحْمِهِ

   “A man called the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the ‘Atirah during the Ignorance days in Rajab,; what do you command us to do?’ He said: “Sacrifice to Allah whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah and feed (the poor).’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the Far’ah during the Ignorance days; what do you command us to do?’ He said: ‘For every Sa’imah (flock of grazing animals), feed the firstborn as you feed the rest of your flock until it reaches an age where it could be used to carry loads, then sacrifice it, and give its meat in charity’ – I think he said – ‘to the wayfarer, for that is good.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3167)

   عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ لُحُومِ الْأَضَاحِيِّ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ كَيْمَا يشبَعُكُمْ فَقَدْ جَاءَ اللهُ بِالْخَيْرِ فَكُلُوا وَادَّخِرُوا وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأَيَّامَ أَيَّامُ أَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ وَذِكْرِ اللهِ» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فِي رَجَبٍ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ «اذْبَحُوا لِلَّهِ مِنْ أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللهَ وَأَطْعِمُوا» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُفَرِّعُ فَرَعًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ مِنَ الْغَنَمِ فَرَعٌ تَغْذُو غَنَمُكَ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَحْمَلَ ذَبَحْتَهُ وَتَصَدَّقْتَ بِلَحْمِهِ عَلَى ابْنِ السَّبِيلِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ خَيْرٌ»

   "I used to forbid you to store the meat of the sacrifices for more than three days so that there would be enough for everyone. But now Allah, the mighty and sublime, has bestowed plenty upon us, so eat some, give some in charity and store some, For these days are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the 'Atirah during the Jahiliyyah in Rajab; what do you command us to do?" He said: "Sacrifice to Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and feed (the poor)." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to sacrifice the Fara' during the Jahiliyyah; what do you command us to do?" He said: "For every flock of grazing animals, feed the firstborn as you feed the rest of your flock, until it reaches an age where it could be used to carry loads, then sacrifice it, and give its meat in charity to the wayfarer, for that is good."     نَادَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً يَعْنِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فِي رَجَبٍ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ «اذْبَحُوا لَهُ فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللهَ وَأَطْعِمُوا» قَالَ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُفَرِّعُ فَرَعًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ قَالَ «فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ فَرَعٌ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَحْمَلَ ذَبَحْتَهُ وَتَصَدَّقْتَ بِلَحْمِهِ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ خَيْرٌ»

    "A man called out to the Prophet and said: 'We used to sacrifice the 'Atirah - i.e., during the Jahiliyyah - in Rajab; what do you command us to do?' He said: 'Sacrifice, whatever month it is, do good for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and feed (the poor).' He said: 'We used to sacrifice the Fara' during the Jahiliyyah; what do you command us to do?'     قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ قَالَ «اذْبَحُوا لِلَّهِ فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللهَ وَأَطْعِمُوا»

    ✧ A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, we used to observe Ateerah in the pre-Islamic period, so what do you command us?" He said, "Sacrifice for Allah in any month, it does not matter which month it is, and maintain good relations with Allah and give food (to the needy)."

    قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَذْبَحُ ذَبَائِحَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فِي رَجَبٍ فَنَأْكُلُ وَنُطْعِمُ مَنْ جَاءَنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ» قَالَ وَكِيعُ بْنُ عُدُسٍ فَلَا أَدَعُهُ

    "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we used to offer sacrifices during the Jahiliyyah in Rajab, and eat of (their meat) and offer some to those who came to us.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'There is nothing wrong with that."' (One of the narrators) Waki bin 'Udus said: "I will not leave it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4233)

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَى شَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ مُلْقَاةٍ فَقَالَ «لِمَنْ هَذِهِ؟» فَقَالُوا لِمَيْمُونَةَ فَقَالَ «مَا عَلَيْهَا لَوِ انْتَفَعَتْ بِإِهَابِهَا؟» قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ اللهُ أَكْلَهَا»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep that had been thrown away and said: "To whom does this belong?" They said: "To Maymūnah." He said: "What harm would it do her if she made use of its hide?" They said: "It is dead." He said: "Allah has only forbidden eating it."

    مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِشَاةٍ مَيِّتَةٍ كَانَ أَعْطَاهَا مَوْلَاةً لِمَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «هَلَّا انْتَفَعْتُمْ بِجِلْدِهَا؟» قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَإِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep that he had given to a freed slave woman of Maymunah, the Prophet's wife ﷺ, and said, "Why did you not make use of its skin?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is dead." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only its eating has been forbidden."

    أَبْصَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَاةً مَيِّتَةً لِمَوْلَاةٍ لِمَيْمُونَةَ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ فَقَالَ «لَوْ نَزَعُوا جِلْدَهَا فَانْتَفَعُوا بِهِ» قَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ «إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a dead sheep belonging to a freed slave woman of Maymunah, and it was from the sadaqah. He said, "If only they had taken off its skin and made use of it." They said, "It is dead." He said, "Only its eating has been forbidden."

    النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَلَا أَخَذْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا فَانْتَفَعْتُمْ بِهِ؟»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why did you not take its hide and make use of it?"

    ✧ I heard Ibn Abbas say: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a dead sheep belonging to Maymunah and said, "Why did you not take its hide and tan it and make use of it?"

    ✧ Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead sheep and said, "Why did you not make use of its hide?"

    عَنْ سَوْدَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَتْ «مَاتَتْ شَاةٌ لَنَا فَدَبَغْنَا مَسْكَهَا فَمَا زِلْنَا نَنْتَبِذُ فِيهَا حَتَّى صَارَتْ شَنًّا»

    ✧ From Sawdah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, she said: "A sheep of ours died, so we tanned its skin, and we kept making nabidh in it until it became worn out."

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَيُّمَا إِهَابٍ دُبِغَ فَقَدْ طَهُرَ»

    إِنَّا نَغْزُو هَذَا الْمَغْرِبَ وَإِنَّهُمْ أَهْلُ وَثَنٍ وَلَهُمْ قِرَبٌ يَكُونُ فِيهَا اللَّبَنُ وَالْمَاءُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ «الدِّبَاغُ طَهُورٌ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ وَعْلَةَ عَنْ رَأْيِكَ أَوْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ بَلْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

    ✧ We raid this Maghrib, and they are people of idolatry, and they have water skins in which there is milk and water. Ibn Abbas said, "Tanning is a purification." Ibn Wa'lah said, "Is this your opinion or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Rather, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

    أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ مِنْ عِنْدِ امْرَأَةٍ فَقَالَتْ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا فِي قِرْبَةٍ لِي مَيْتَةٍ فَقَالَ «أَلَيْسَ قَدْ دَبَغْتِهَا؟» قَالَتْ بَلَى قَالَ «فَإِنَّ دِبَاغَهَا ذَكَاتُهَا»

    ✧ The Prophet of Allah ﷺ, during the expedition of Tabuk, called for water from a woman. She said, "I have none except in a water skin of mine from an animal that died." He said, "Did you not tan it?" She said, "Yes." He said, "For its tanning is its slaughtering."

    سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ جُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ فَقَالَ «دِبَاغُهَا طَهُورُهَا»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the skins of dead animals and he said, "Tanning them is their purification."

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The slaughtering of a dead animal is its tanning."

    أَنَّ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَدَّثَتْهَا أَنَّهُ مَرَّ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ رِجَالٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ يَجُرُّونَ شَاةً لَهُمْ مِثْلَ الْحِمَارِ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَوْ أَخَذْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا؟» فَقَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يُطَهِّرُهَا الْمَاءُ وَالْقَرَظُ»

    ✧ Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, narrated to her that some men of Quraysh passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dragging a sheep of theirs that was like a donkey. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, “Why not take its skin?” They said, “It is dead.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Water and qaraz (acacia pods) purify it.”

    قُرِئَ عَلَيْنَا كِتَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَرْضِ جُهَيْنَةَ وَأَنَا غُلَامٌ شَابٌّ «أَنْ لَا تَنْتَفِعُوا مِنَ الْمَيْتَةِ بِشَيْءٍ بِإِهَابٍ وَلَا عَصْبٍ»

    ✧ The letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was read to us from the land of Juhaynah while I was a young boy: “Do not benefit from the dead animal in any way, neither by its skin nor by its sinew.”

    كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَنْ لَا تَسْتَنْفِعُوا مِنَ الْمَيْتَةِ بِإِهَابٍ وَلَا عَصْبٍ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to us: “Do not make use of the dead animal by its skin or by its sinew.”

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to Juhaynah: “Do not utilize the dead animal by its skin or by its sinew.”

    ✧ Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid wearing the skins of wild animals and riding on them? He said, “Yes.” Abu Abd al-Rahman said: The most sound thing in this chapter concerning the skins of dead animals when tanned is the hadith of al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah b. Abd Allah b. Utbah, from Ibn Abbas.

    أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ «إِنَّ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيْعَ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْتَةِ وَالْخِنْزِيرِ وَالْأَصْنَامِ» فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ شُحُومَ الْمَيْتَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يُطْلَى بِهَا السُّفُنُ وَيُدَّهَنُ بِهَا الْجُلُودُ وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِهَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ «لَا هُوَ حَرَامٌ» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ «قَاتَلَ اللهُ الْيَهُودَ إِنَّ اللهَ لَمَّا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمُ شُحُومَهَا أَجْمَلُوهُ ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ»

    ✧ He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in the year of the conquest, while he was in Makkah: “Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, dead animals, pigs, and idols.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of the fat of dead animals, for it is used to caulk ships, to grease hides, and people use it for lamps?” He said, “No, it is forbidden.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “May Allah fight the Jews; when Allah forbade them their fat, they rendered it and sold it, and consumed its price.”

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «قَاتَلَ اللهُ الْيَهُودَ حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّحُومُ فَجَمَّلُوهَا؟» قَالَ سُفْيَانُ يَعْنِي أَذَابُوهَا

    "It reached 'Umar that Samurah had sold some wine, and he said: 'May Allah ruin Samurah! Does he not know that the Messenger of Allah said: May Allah curse the Jews, for animal fat was forbidden to them, but they rendered it.' Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: "Meaning: They melted it down." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4257)

    ✧ A mouse fell into some ghee and died, and the Prophet ﷺ was asked about it. He said, “Remove it and what is around it, and eat the rest.”

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a mouse that fell into ghee. He said, “Take it and what is around it and throw it away.”

    عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْفَأْرَةِ تَقَعُ فِي السَّمْنِ قَالَ «إِنْ كَانَ جَامِدًا فَأَلْقُوهَا وَمَا حَوْلَهَا وَإِنْ كَانَ مَائِعًا فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهُ»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a mouse that falls into ghee. He said, “If it is solid, remove it and what is around it; if it is liquid, do not go near it.”

    ✧ I heard Ibn Abbas say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a dead goat and said, “What harm would it have been to the owners of this sheep if they had made use of its skin?”
