13. ʿAqīqah (Ceremony for the Newborn)

   سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ قَالَ «لَا يُحِبُّ اللهُ الْعُقُوقَ» كَأَنَّهُ كَرِهَ الِاسْمَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّمَا نَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ أَحَدِنَا يُولَدُ لَهُ قَالَ «مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَنْسُكَ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ فَلْيَنْسُكْ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ» قَالَ دَاوُدُ سَأَلْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ أَسْلَمَ عَنِ الْمُكَافِأَتَانِ قَالَ الشَّاتَانِ الْمُشْتَبِهَتَانِ تُذْبَحَانِ جَمِيعًا

   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the ʿaqīqah. He said: "Allah does not love ʿuqūq (disobedience to parents)." It was as if he disliked the name. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are only asking you about one of us who has a child born to him." He said: "Whoever wishes to offer a sacrifice on behalf of his child, let him do so: for a boy, two sheep of similar age and quality, and for a girl, one sheep." Dawud said: I asked Zayd b. Aslam about al-mukāfiʼatān. He said: "Two sheep that are similar to each other and are slaughtered together."

   أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ «عَقَّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ»

   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ʿaqīqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn.

   أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «فِي الْغُلَامِ عَقِيقَتَهُ فَأَهْرِيقُوا عَنْهُ دَمًا وَأَمِيطُوا عَنْهُ الْأَذَى»

   "For a boy there shoud be an 'Aqiqah, so shed blood for him, and remove the harm from him." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4214)

   أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «وَعَنِ الْغُلَامِ عَقِيقَتُهُ فَأَهْرِيقُوا عَنْهُ دَمًا وَأَمِيطُوا عَنْهُ الْأَذَى»

   ✧ The Prophet ﷺ said: "And concerning the boy, his ʿaqīqah. So shed blood on his behalf and remove the harm from him."

   أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «فِي الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَفِي الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "For the boy there are two matched sheep, and for the girl one sheep."

   أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافَأَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

   ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "For the boy, two matched sheep; and for the girl, one sheep."

   أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بِالْحُدَيْبِيَةِ أَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ لُحُومِ الْهَدْيِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ «عَلَى الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ وَعَلَى الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ ذُكْرَانًا كَانَتْ أَمْ إِنَاثًا»

   ✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ at al-Ḥudaybiyah asking him about the meat of the sacrificial animals, and I heard him say: "Upon the boy there are two sheep, and upon the girl one sheep. It will not harm you whether they are male or female."

   أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ لَا يَضُرُّكُمْ ذُكْرَانًا كُنَّ أَمْ إِنَاثًا»

   "For a boy, two sheep, and or a girl, one sheep, and it does not matter if they are male or female (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4218)
