✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. Some of us were shooting arrows, some were in their camp, and some were repairing their tents when the call to prayer was announced. We gathered and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivering a sermon, saying: "There has been no prophet before me but it was incumbent upon Allah to guide his community to what is best for them and to warn them of what he knows is evil for them. Indeed, this community has been granted well-being at its beginning, and its later part will be afflicted with trials. A tribulation will come and the believer will say, 'This is my destruction.' Then it will come again and he will say, 'This is my destruction.' Then it will disperse. Whoever of you wishes to be kept away from the Fire and to enter Paradise, let his death come upon him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him bring to people what he loves to be brought to him. Whoever pledges allegiance to a leader, giving him his handshake and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he can." He (the narrator) said: I said: "This is your cousin Mu'awiyah; he commands us to consume our wealth among ourselves in falsehood and to shed our blood, while Allah said: {O you who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves in falsehood} and said: {And do not kill yourselves}." He said: Then he was silent for a while and then said: "Obey him in obedience to Allah and disobey him in disobedience to Allah."

  27. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5962Sahih

✧ "Indeed, before the Hour there will be tribulations like patches of dark night. In them a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, and a believer in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning. The one sitting in them is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one running. Break your bows, cut your bowstrings, and strike your swords against stones. If someone's house is entered upon, let him be like the better of the two sons of Adam."

✧ We came to al-Yashkuri in a group from Banu Layth. He said: "From which people are you?" We said: "Banu Layth." We asked him and he asked us. They said: "We have come to ask you about the hadith of Hudhayfah." He said: "We returned with Abu Musa from one of his expeditions. The animals became expensive in Kufah. My companion and I asked Abu Musa for permission, and he granted it to us. We arrived in Kufah early in the day. I said to my companion: 'I am entering the mosque; when the market opens I will come out to you.' I entered the mosque and found a circle as if their heads had been cut off, listening to the talk of a man. I came and stood over them. A man came and stood beside me. I said to the man: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Are you from Basrah?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I knew that if you were from Kufah you would not ask about this. This is Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman.' I drew near to him and heard him saying: 'People used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, but I used to ask him about evil, knowing that good would not overtake me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good?" He said: "O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it," saying it to me three times. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good?" He said: "Tribulation and evil." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be good after this evil?" He said: "A truce upon smoke." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, truce upon smoke, what is it?" He said: "The hearts of some people will not return to what they were upon." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good?" He said: "O Hudhayfah, learn the Book of Allah and follow what is in it," three times. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good?" He said: "A blind and deaf tribulation, upon which are callers at the gates of the Fire. If you die, O Hudhayfah, while biting upon the root of a dry tree, it is better for you than following any one of them.""

✧ Abu Dharr came to Uthman from Syria and said: "O Commander of the Believers, open the door so that people may enter. Do you consider me among a people who recite the Quran but it does not go beyond their throats? They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through its target, then they do not return to it until the arrow returns to its notch. They are the worst of creation and creatures. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if you commanded me to sit I would not stand, and if you commanded me to be standing I would stand as long as my legs could support me, and if you tied me to a camel I would not release myself until you are the one who releases me." Then he asked his permission to go to al-Rabadhah, and he granted it. He went there and found a slave leading them in prayer. They said: "Abu Dharr." The slave stepped back. It was said to him: "Come forward." He said: "My close friend ﷺ advised me with three things: to hear and obey even if it is an Ethiopian slave with mutilated limbs; and when I make a broth, to increase its water, then look at your neighbors and give them from it in kindness; and to pray the prayer at its time, for if you come to the imam and he has already prayed, you have secured your prayer, otherwise it is supererogatory for you."

He said: "Whoever has camels, let him join his camels; whoever has sheep, let him join his sheep; whoever has land, let him join his land; whoever has none of that, let him go to his sword and strike its edge against a rock, then let him escape if he can find a way of escape."

✧ We were sitting with Umar and he said: "Which of you remembers the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about tribulation?" I said: "I do." He said: "You are indeed worthy, or bold. How did he say it?" I said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The tribulation of a man in himself, his family, his wealth, his child, and his neighbor is expiated by fasting, charity, prayer, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.'" Umar said: "This is not what I mean. I mean the one that surges like the waves of the sea." I said: "What do you have to do with it, O Commander of the Believers? Between you and it is a closed door." He said: "Will the door be broken or opened?" I said: "It will be broken." He said: "That is more likely that it will never be closed again." We said to Hudhayfah: "Did Umar know who the door was?" He said: "Yes, as he knows that before tomorrow is tonight."
