46. Exorcism and Amulets

  1. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8266Sahih

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا اشْتَكَى الْإِنْسَانُ الشَّيْءَ مِنْهُ أَوْ كَانَتْ بِهِ قَرْحَةٌ أَوْ جُرِحَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِإِصْبَعِهِ هَكَذَا وَوَضَعَ سَبَّابَتَهُ بِالْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَهَا «بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا»

    ✧ When a person complained of something, or had a sore, or was wounded, the Prophet ﷺ would say with his finger like this—and he placed his forefinger on the ground then raised it—: “In the name of Allah, the dust of our earth with the saliva of some of us, our sick is healed by the permission of our Lord.”

    «أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَسْتَرْقِيَ مِنَ الْعَيْنِ»

    ✧ “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to seek ruqyah for the evil eye.”

    عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ أَتَاهُ وَهُوَ يُوعَكُ فَقَالَ «بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ حَسَدٍ وَحَاسِدٍ وَكُلِّ غَمٍّ وَاسْمُ اللَّهِ يَشْفِيكَ»

    ✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Gabriel ﷺ came to him while he was feverish and said: “In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you from everything that harms you, from every envy and envier, and every distress; and the name of Allah heals you.”

    كُنْتُ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَجَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَقَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّ لِي أَخًا وَبِهِ وَجَعٌ قَالَ «وَمَا وَجَعُهُ؟» قَالَ بِهِ لَمَمٌ قَالَ «فَأْتِنِي بِهِ» فَأَتَاهُ بِهِ فَوَضَعَهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَعَوَّذَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ وَأَرْبَعِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ وَهَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ {وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ} [البقرة 163] وَآيَةِ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَآيَةٍ مِنْ آلِ عِمْرَانَ {شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ} [آل عمران 18] وَآيَةٍ مِنَ الْأَعْرَافِ {إِنَّ رَبُّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ} وَآخَرِ سُورَةِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ {فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ} [المؤمنون 116] وَآيَةٍ مِنْ سُورَةِ الْجِنِّ {وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَى جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا} [الجن 3] وَعَشْرِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ الصَّافَّاتِ وَثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْحَشْرِ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ « فَقَامَ الرَّجُلُ كَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَشْكُ شَيْئًا قَطُّ»

    ✧ I was with the Prophet ﷺ, when a Bedouin came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a brother who is suffering from a pain." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What kind of pain does he have?" The Bedouin replied, "He has a swelling." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Bring him to me." The Bedouin brought his brother, and the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on the affected area and recited the opening chapter of the Quran and four verses from the end of Surah Al-Baqarah: "Your God is one God, there is no god but Him, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate" (Quran 2:163) and the verse of the Throne (Ayat al-Kursi) and a verse from Surah Al-Imran: "Allah bears witness that there is no god but Him" (Quran 3:18), and a verse from Surah Al-A'raf: "Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth" (Quran 7:54), and the last verses of Surah Al-Mu'minun: "So exalted is Allah, the true King" (Quran 23:116), and a verse from Surah Al-Jinn: "And that, our Lord, is exalted in might" (Quran 72:3), and ten verses from the beginning of Surah As-Saffat and three verses from the end of Surah Al-Hashr, and "Say: He is Allah, the One" (Quran 112:1) and the two protective Surahs (Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Falaq). The man stood up as if he had never experienced any pain before.

    سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ يَقُولُ مَرَرْنَا بِسَيْلٍ فَدَخَلْتُ فَاغْتَسَلْتُ فِيهِ فَخَرَجْتُ مَحْمُومًا فَنُمِيَ ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مُرُوا أَبَا ثَابِتٍ يَتَعَوَّذَ» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ يَا سَيِّدِي وَالرُّقَى صَالِحَةٌ؟ فَقَالَ «لَا رُقَى إِلَّا فِي نَفْسٍ أَوْ حُمَةٍ أَوْ لَدْغَةٍ»

    ✧ I heard Sahl b. Hunayf say: We passed by a flood stream, and I entered it and bathed in it. I came out with a fever. That was reported to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, “Tell Abu Thabit to seek refuge.” He said: I said, “O my master, are incantations valid?” He said, “There is no incantation except for the evil eye, fever, or a sting.”

    «لَا رُقْيَةَ إِلَّا مِنْ عَيْنٍ أَوْ حُمَّى أَوْ دَمٍ لَا يَرْقَأُ»

    ✧ “There is no ruqyah except from the evil eye, fever, or blood that does not stop.”

  7. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8272Weak

    كَانَ إِذَا أَصَابَهُ رَمَدٌ أَوْ أَحَدًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ دَعَا بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ «اللَّهُمَّ مَتِّعْنِي بِبَصَرِي وَاجْعَلْهُ الْوَارِثَ مِنِّي وَأَرِنِي فِي الْعَدُوِّ ثَأْرِي وَانْصُرْنِي عَلَى مَنْ ظَلَمَنِي»

    ✧ When he suffered from ophthalmia, or one of his family or companions did, he would supplicate with these words: “O Allah, let me enjoy my sight and make it my heir, show me my vengeance upon the enemy, and help me against those who wronged me.”

    مَنْ قَالَ عِنْدَ عَطْسَةٍ يَسْمَعُهَا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ لَمْ يَجِدْ وَجَعَ الضِّرْسِ وَلَا وَجَعَ الْأُذُنِ

    ✧ Whoever says upon hearing a sneeze, “Praise be to Allah in every situation,” will not suffer toothache or earache.

    كَانَ يُعَلِّمُهُمْ مِنَ الْأَوْجَاعِ وَمِنَ الْحُمَّى أَنْ يَقُولَ «بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الْكَبِيرِ نَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ مِنْ شَرِّ عِرْقِ نَعَّارٍ وَمَنْ شَرِّ حَرِّ النَّارِ»

    ✧ He used to teach them, for pains and fever, to say: “In the name of Allah, the Great. We seek refuge in Allah, the Magnificent, from the evil of a gushing vein and from the evil of the heat of the Fire.”

  10. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8275Sahih

    يُقَالُ لَهَا الشِّفَاءُ كَانَتْ تَرْقِي مِنَ النَّمْلَةِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «عَلِّمِيهَا حَفْصَةَ»

    ✧ She was called al-Shifa’. She used to perform ruqyah for namlah (a skin ailment). The Prophet ﷺ said, “Teach it to Hafsah.”

  11. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8276Sahih

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَأَى فِي بَيْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ جَارِيَةً بِوَجْهِهَا سَفْعَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «بِهَا نَظْرَةٌ فَاسْتَرْقُوا لَهَا»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw in the house of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, a slave girl with a mark on her face, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "She has been affected by the evil eye, so perform ruqyah for her."

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ يُقَالُ لَهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ حَزْمٍ وَكَانَ يَرْقِي مِنَ الْحَيَّةِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ نَهَيْتَ عَنِ الرُّقَى وَأَنَا أَرْقِي مِنَ الْحَيَّةِ قَالَ «قُصَّهَا عَلَيَّ» فَقَصَّهَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ «لَا بَأْسَ بِهَذِهِ هَذِهِ مَوَاثِيقُ» قَالَ وَجَاءَ خَالِي مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَكَانَ يَرْقِي مِنَ الْعَقْرَبِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ نَهَيْتَ عَنِ الرُّقَى وَأَنَا أَرْقِي مِنَ الْعَقْرَبِ قَالَ «مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَ أَخَاهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ»

    ✧ A man from the Ansar called Amr b. Hazm came, and he used to perform ruqyah for snakebites. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you have forbidden ruqyah, but I perform ruqyah for snakebites." He said: "Recite it to me." So he recited it to him, and he said: "There is no harm in this; these are covenants." He said: And my maternal uncle from the Ansar came, and he used to perform ruqyah for scorpion stings. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you have forbidden ruqyah, but I perform ruqyah for scorpion stings." He said: "Whoever is able to benefit his brother, let him do so."

  13. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8278Sahih

    عُرِضَتْ عَلَيَّ الْأُمَمُ بِالْمَوْسِمِ فَرَأَيْتُ جَمِيعَهُمْ فَأَعْجَبَنِي كَثْرَتُهُمْ وَهَيْبَتُهُمْ قَدْ مَلَأُوا السَّهْلَ وَالْجَبَلَ فَقِيلَ أَيْ مُحَمَّدُ رَضِيتَ؟ فَأَقُولُ نَعَمْ أَيْ رَبِّ فَقَالَ إِنَّ لَكَ مَعَ هَؤُلَاءِ سَبْعِينَ أَلْفًا يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ وَهُمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَسْتَرْقُونَ وَلَا يَكْتَوُونَ وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ فَقَامَ عُكَّاشَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ فَدَعَا لَهُ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ آخِرُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ «سَبَقَكَ إِلَيْهَا عُكَّاشَةُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The nations were presented to me in a vision at the appointed time, and I saw all of them, and I was amazed by their large number and their dignity. They filled the plains and the mountains. It was said to me, 'O Muhammad, are you pleased?' I said, 'Yes, my Lord.' He said, 'For you, there are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without being held accountable. They are the ones who do not practice Aatrar (cauterization) or seek Ruqyah (healing through charms), and they rely upon their Lord.' Ukkashah bin Mihsan stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He may make me one of them.' So he supplicated for him. Then another man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He may make me one of them.' He said, 'Ukkashah has preceded you in this.'"

    «لَمْ يَتَوَكَّلْ مَنِ اسْتَرْقَى أَوِ اكْتَوَى»

    ✧ "He has not put his trust in Allah who seeks ruqyah or cauterization."

  15. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8280No grade recorded

    مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُمْسِي أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ لَمْ تَضُرَّهُ حَيَّةُ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ قَالَ وَكَانَ إِذَا لُدِغَ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ إِنْسَانٌ قَالَ مَا قَالَ الْكَلِمَاتِ

    ✧ Whoever says in the evening: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created' three times, no snake will harm him that night. He said: And when someone from his family was stung, he would say: 'Did he say the words?'

  16. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8281Sahih

    «أَنَّهُ لَدَغَتْهُ عَقْرَبٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَرَقَاهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَمَسَحَ بِيَدِهِ»

    ✧ "He was stung by a scorpion in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ performed ruqyah for him and wiped him with his hand."

  17. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8282Sahih

    مَنْ عَادَ مَرِيضًا لَمْ يَحْضُرْ أَجَلُهُ فَقَالَ عِنْدَهُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ وَيُعَافِيَكَ إِلَّا عَافَاهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْمَرَضِ

    ✧ Whoever visits a sick person whose time of death has not yet come, and says in his presence seven times: 'I ask Allah the Almighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you and grant you well-being,' Allah will grant him recovery from that illness.

  18. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8283Sahih

    أَنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ أَتَوُا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ صَاحِبًا لَنَا مَرِيضٌ فَوُصِفَ لَنَا الْكَيُّ أَفَنَكْوِيهِ؟ فَسَكَتَ ثُمَّ عَادَ ثُمَّ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ «اكْوُوهُ إِنْ شِئْتُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ فَارْضِفُوهُ»

    ✧ Three people came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "A companion of ours is sick, and cauterization has been prescribed for us. Should we cauterize him?" He remained silent. Then they repeated, and on the third time he said: "Cauterize him if you wish, or if you wish, heat stones and apply them."

  19. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8284Sahih

    «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْكَيِّ فَاكْتَوَيْنَا فَمَا أَفْلَحْنَا وَلَا أَنْجَحْنَا»

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade cauterization, so we cauterized ourselves and we did not succeed and did not prosper."

  20. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8285Abu Dawud silent

    «رُمِيَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فِي أَكْحَلِهِ فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ طَبِيبًا فَكَوَاهُ» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

    ✧ "Ubayy b. Ka'b was shot in his median cubital vein, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a physician to him, who cauterized him." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

  21. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8286Sahih

    «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَوَى أَسْعَدَ بْنَ زُرَارَةَ مِنَ الشَّوْكَةِ» على شرط البخاري ومسلم

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cauterized As'ad b. Zurarah for a thorn injury." On the condition of Bukhari and Muslim.

  22. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8287Sahih

    رُمِيَ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ فِي أَكْحَلِهِ فَحَسَمَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ بِمِشْقَصٍ قَالَ ثُمَّ وَرِمَتْ فَحَسَمَهُ الثَّانِيَةَ

    ✧ Sa'd b. Mu'adh was shot in his median cubital vein, and the Prophet ﷺ cauterized it with his own hand using a broad arrowhead. He said: Then it became swollen, so he cauterized it a second time.

  23. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8288Sahih

    «كَوَانِي أَبُو طَلْحَةَ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِنَا فَمَا نُهِيتُ عَنْهُ»

    ✧ "Abu Talhah cauterized me while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, and I was not forbidden from it."

  24. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8289Sahih

    «مَنْ عَلَّقَ وَدَعَةً فَلَا وَدَعَ اللَّهُ لَهُ وَمَنْ عَلَّقَ تَمِيمَةً فَلَا تَمَّمَ اللَّهُ لَهُ»

    ✧ Whoever hangs a shell amulet, may Allah not grant him peace; and whoever hangs a talisman, may Allah not complete [his affair] for him.

    عَنْ زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّهَا أَصَابَهَا حُمْرَةٌ فِي وَجْهِهَا فَدَخَلَتْ عَلَيْهَا عَجُوزٌ فَرَقَتْهَا فِي خَيْطٍ فَعَلَّقَتْهُ عَلَيْهَا فَدَخَلَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَرَآهُ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا؟ فَقَالَتْ اسْتَرْقَيْتُ مِنَ الْحُمْرَةِ فَمَدَّ يَدَهُ فَقَطَعَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ آلَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَأَغْنِيَاءُ عَنِ الشِّرْكِ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَدَّثَنَا «إِنَّ الرُّقَى وَالتَّمَائِمَ وَالتَّوْلِيَةَ شِرْكٌ» قَالَ فَقُلْتُ مَا التَّوْلِيَةُ؟ قَالَ «التَّوْلِيَةُ هُوَ الَّذِي يُهَيِّجُ الرِّجَالَ»

    ✧ From Zaynab, the wife of 'Abdullah, that she had a redness in her face, and an old woman entered upon her and recited a ruqya over her into a thread and tied it on her. Ibn Mas'ud entered, saw it on her, and said: 'What is this?' She said: 'I sought ruqya for the redness.' He stretched out his hand and cut it, then said: 'The family of 'Abdullah is indeed free of need from shirk.' She said: Then he said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us: "Indeed ruqā, talismans, and tawliya are shirk."' He said: I said: 'What is tawliya?' He said: 'Tawliya is that which arouses men.'

  26. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 8291Sahih

    «التَّمَائِمُ مَا عُلِّقَ قَبْلَ نُزُولِ الْبَلَاءِ وَمَا عُلِّقَ بَعْدَهُ فَلَيْسَ بِتَمِيمَةٍ»

    ✧ Talismans are what is hung before calamity descends; as for what is hung after it, it is not a talisman.

    «ذَكَرُوا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهَا مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ»

    ✧ They mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ that it is from the work of Shaytan.
