17. Religious Battles
قَعَدْنَا نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتَذَاكَرْنَا فَقُلْنَا لَوْ نَعْلَمُ أَيَّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى لَعَمِلْنَاهُ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى {«سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّماَوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ كَبُرَ مَقْتًا»} [الصف 2] حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا قَالَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا ابْنُ سَلَامٍ قَالَ يَحْيَى فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ وَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا يَحْيَى وَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ وَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيْنَا مُحَمَّدٌ
✧ A group of us from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and discussed, saying: “If only we knew which deeds are most beloved to Allah, the Exalted, we would do them.” Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: “Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred…” [al-Saff: 2], until He completed it. Abdullah said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to us until he completed it.” Abu Salamah said: “Ibn Salam recited it to us.” Yahya said: “Abu Salamah recited it to us, and Yahya recited it to us, and al-Awza‘i recited it to us, and Muhammad recited it to us.”

«تَكَفَّلَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ لَا يُخْرِجُهُ إِلَّا جِهَادٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَتَصْدِيقُ بِكَلِمَاتِهِ أَنْ يُدْخِلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ يَرُدَّهُ إِلَى مَسْكَنِهِ الَّذِي خَرَجَ مِنْهُ مَعَ مَا نَالَ مِنْ أَجْرٍ أَوْ غَنِيمَةٍ»
✧ “Allah has guaranteed for the one who goes out from his house, nothing driving him out except jihad in the path of Allah and belief in His words, that He will admit him to Paradise or return him to his dwelling from which he went out, along with whatever he attained of reward or spoils.”

قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ الْجِهَادِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «مَنْ عُقِرَ جَوَادُهُ وَأُهْرِيقَ دَمُهُ»
✧ It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, which jihad is best?” He said: “The one whose horse is hamstrung and his blood is spilled.”
سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ» قَالَ قِيلَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ» قِيلَ ثُمَّ مَاذَا؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ»
The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which is the best deed?" He said, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle." He was then asked, "Which is the next (in goodness)?" He said, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." He was then asked, "Which is the next?" He said, "To perform Hajj-Mabrur. " (Using translation from Bukhārī 1519)
Sunan ad-Darimi 2439Hasan
«مَنْ قَاتَلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فُوَاقَ نَاقَةٍ وَجَبَتْ لَهُ الْجَنَّةُ وَهُوَ قَدْرُ مَا يدُرُّ حَلَبَهَا لِمَنْ حَلَبَهَا»
✧ “Whoever fights in the path of Allah for the time between two milkings of a camel, Paradise is guaranteed for him — and that is the amount of time it takes for her milk to flow for the one who milks her.”

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ فَقَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً؟» قُلْنَا بَلَى قَالَ رَجُلٌ مُمْسِكٌ بِرَأْسِ فَرَسِهِ أَوْ قَالَ فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ يُقْتَلَ قَالَ فَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَلِيهِ فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «امْرُؤٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي شِعْبٍ يُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَيَعْتَزِلُ شُرُورَ النَّاسِ» قَالَ «فَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ مَنْزِلَةً؟» فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ وَلَا يُعْطِي بِهِ»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ came out to them while they were sitting and said: “Shall I tell you about the best of people in rank?” We said: “Yes.” He said: “A man holding the head of his horse — or he said: a horse — in the path of Allah until he dies or is killed.” Then he said: “Shall I tell you about the one who comes after him?” We said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “A man withdrawing into a mountain pass, establishing prayer, giving zakah, and keeping away from people’s evils.” Then he said: “Shall I tell you about the worst of people in rank?” We said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “The one who is asked by Allah, the Almighty, and does not give by Him.”
«مَقَامُ الرَّجُلِ فِي الصَّفِّ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ الرَّجُلِ سِتِّينَ سَنَةً»
✧ “A man’s standing in the ranks in the path of Allah is better than a man’s worship for sixty years.”

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنِ اغْبَرَّتْ قَدَمَاهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ حَرَّمَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى النَّارِ»
✧ Indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever's two feet become dusty in the path of Allah, Allah forbids him to the Fire.”

«لَغَدْوَةٌ فِي سبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ رَوْحَةٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا»
✧ “A morning's journey in the path of Allah or an evening's journey in the path of Allah is better than the world and what it contains.”

«مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ إِلَّا بَاعَدَ اللَّهُ بَيْنَ وَجْهِهِ وَبَيْنَ النَّارِ سَبْعِينَ خَرِيفًا»
✧ “There is no servant who fasts a day in the path of Allah, seeking the face of Allah, except that Allah distances between his face and the Fire by seventy autumns.”

كَانَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ فَسَمِعَهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «حُرِّمَتِ النَّارُ عَلَى عَيْنٍ سَهِرَتْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَحُرِّمَتِ النَّارُ عَلَى عَيْنٍ دَمَعَتْ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ» قَالَ وَقَالَ الثَّالِثَةَ فَنَسِيتُهَا
✧ He was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition, and one night he heard him saying: “The Fire is forbidden to an eye that stayed awake in the path of Allah, and the Fire is forbidden to an eye that wept from fear of Allah.” He said: And he said the third, but I forgot it.

رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَكَ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ سَبْعُ مِائَةِ نَاقَةٍ كُلُّهَا مَخْطُومَةٌ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “For it on the Day of Resurrection you will have seven hundred she-camels, all of them bridled.”

لَقِيتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ وَهُوَ يَسُوقُ جَمَلًا لَهُ أَوْ يَقُودُهُ فِي عُنُقِهِ قِرْبَةٌ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ مَالُكَ قَالَ لِي عَمَلِي فَقُلْتُ مَالُكَ قَالَ لِي عَمَلِي قُلْتُ حَدِّثْنِي حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ أَنْفَقَ زَوْجَيْنِ مِنْ مَالٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِلَّا ابْتَدَرَتْهُ حَجَبَةُ الْجَنَّةِ» قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد «هُوَ دِرْهَمَيْنِ أَوْ أَمَتَيْنِ أَوْ عَبْدَيْنِ أَوْ دَابَّتَيْنِ»
✧ I met Abu Dharr while he was driving a camel of his, or leading it, with a water-skin on his neck. I said, “O Abu Dharr, what is wrong with you?” He said, “My work is with me.” I said, “What is wrong with you?” He said, “My work is with me.” I said, “Narrate to me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘There is no Muslim who spends a pair from his wealth in the path of Allah except that the gatekeepers of Paradise rush to meet him.’” Abu Muhammad said: “It means two dirhams, or two slave women, or two slaves, or two riding animals.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2448Sahih
أَنَّهُ تَلَا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {وَأَعِدُّوا لَهُمْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ} [الأنفال 60] أَلَا إِنَّ الْقُوَّةَ الرَّمْيُ
✧ That he recited this verse: {And prepare against them whatever you are able of power} [Al-Anfal 60]. “Verily, power is archery.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِنَّ اللَّهَ ﷻ يُدْخِلُ الثَّلَاثَةَ بِالسَّهْمِ الْوَاحِدِ الْجَنَّةَ صَانِعَهُ يَحْتَسِبُ فِي صَنْعَتِهِ الْخَيْرَ وَالْمُمِدَّ بِهِ وَالرَّامِيَ بِهِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed Allah ﷻ admits three people to Paradise by a single arrow: its maker, who seeks reward in making it for good; the one who hands it to the archer; and the one who shoots it.”

َرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا مِنْ مَجْرُوحٍ يُجْرَحُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ﷻ إِلَّا بَعَثَهُ اللَّهُ ﷻ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَجُرْحُهُ يَدْمَى الرِّيحُ رِيحُ الْمِسْكِ وَاللَّوْنُ لَوْنُ الدَّمِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no wounded person who is wounded in the path of Allah ﷻ except that Allah ﷻ will raise him on the Day of Resurrection while his wound bleeds, its scent the scent of musk and its color the color of blood.”

«مَنْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الشَّهَادَةَ صَادِقًا مِنْ قَلْبِهِ بَلَّغَهُ اللَّهُ مَنَازِلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَإِنْ مَاتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ»
✧ “Whoever asks Allah for martyrdom sincerely from his heart, Allah will cause him to reach the stations of the martyrs, even if he dies on his bed.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2452Hasan
«مَا يَجِدُ الشَّهِيدُ مِنْ أَلَمِ الْقَتْلِ إِلَّا كَمَا يَجِدُ أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ أَلَمِ الْقَرْصَةِ»
✧ “The martyr finds no pain from being killed except as one of you finds from the pain of a pinch.”

«مَا مِنْ نَفْسٍ تَمُوتُ فَتَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ فَتَوَدُّ أَنَّهَا رَجَعَتْ إِلَيْكُمْ وَلَهَا الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا إِلَّا الشَّهِيدَ فَإِنَّهُ يَوَدُّ أَنَّهُ قُتِلَ كَذَا مَرَّةً لِمَا رَأَى مِنَ الثَّوَابِ»
✧ “There is no soul that dies and enters Paradise and wishes that it returned to you, even if it had the world and what it contains, except the martyr; for he wishes that he were killed again and again, because of what he has seen of the reward.”

سَأَلْنَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَرْوَاحُ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَلَوْلَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَمْ يُحَدِّثْنَا أَحَدٌ قَالَ أَرْوَاحُ الشُّهَدَاءِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي حَوَاصِلِ طَيْرٍ خُضْرٍ لَهَا قَنَادِيلُ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِالْعَرْشِ تَسْرَحُ فِي أَيِّ الْجَنَّةِ شَاءُوا ثُمَّ تَرْجِعُ إِلَى قَنَادِيلِهَا فَيُشْرِفُ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ فَيَقُولُ أَلَكُمْ حَاجَةٌ؟ تُرِيدُونَ شَيْئًا؟ فَيَقُولُونَ لَا إِلَّا أَنْ نَرْجِعَ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا فَنُقْتَلَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى
✧ "Regarding the souls of the martyrs, if it were not for Abdullah, no one would have informed us. He said that the souls of the martyrs are with Allah on the Day of Judgment in the bodies of green birds, with lanterns hanging from the throne, freely roaming in the gardens of paradise as they please. Then they return to their lanterns, and their Lord honors them and asks, 'Do you have any need? Is there anything you desire?' They respond, 'No, except that we want to return to the world and be killed again.'"

الْقَتْلَى ثَلَاثَةٌ مُؤْمِنٌ جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى قُتِلَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِيهِ «فَذَلِكَ الشَّهِيدُ الْمُمْتَحَنُ فِي خَيْمَةِ اللَّهِ تَحْتَ عَرْشِهِ لَا يَفْضُلُهُ النَّبِيُّونَ إِلَّا بِدَرَجَةِ النُّبُوَّةِ وَمُؤْمِنٌ خَلَطَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَآخَرَ سَيِّئًا جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ إِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ» قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «فِيهِ مُمَصْمِصَةٌ مَحَتْ ذُنُوبَهُ وَخَطَايَاهُ إِنَّ السَّيْفَ مَحَّاءٌ لِلْخَطَايَا وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أَيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ شَاءَ وَمُنَافِقٌ جَاهَدَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ فَإِذَا لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ قَاتَلَ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ فَذَاكَ فِي النَّارِ إِنَّ السَّيْفَ لَا يَمْحُو النِّفَاقَ»
✧ The slain are three: a believer who strove with his self and his wealth in the path of Allah; when he met the enemy he fought until he was killed. The Prophet ﷺ said concerning him: 'That is the tested martyr in the tent of Allah beneath His Throne, none surpassing him except the prophets by the degree of prophethood. And a believer who mixed a righteous deed with another evil one, who strove with his self and his wealth in the path of Allah; when he met the enemy he fought until he was killed.' The Prophet ﷺ said concerning him: 'A cleansing purifier that wiped away his sins and his errors; indeed the sword is an eraser of errors, and he will be admitted to Paradise from whichever of the gates of Paradise he wishes. And a hypocrite who strove with his self and his wealth; when he met the enemy he fought until he was killed, then that one is in the Fire; indeed the sword does not erase hypocrisy.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَامَ فَخَطَبَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْجِهَادَ فَلَمْ يَدَعْ شَيْئًا أَفْضَلَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا الْفَرَائِضَ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ مَنْ قُتِلَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَهَلْ ذَلِكَ مُكَفِّرٌ عَنْهُ خَطَايَاهُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «نَعَمْ إِذَا قُتِلَ صَابِرًا مُحْتَسِبًا مُقْبِلًا غَيْرَ مُدْبِرٍ إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّهُ مَأْخُوذٌ بِهِ كَمَا زَعَمَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and gave a sermon, praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned jihad and did not leave anything more virtuous than it except the obligatory duties. A man stood and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of one who is killed in the path of Allah—does that expiate his sins?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Yes, if he is killed patiently, expectant of reward, advancing and not retreating—except for debt, for he will be taken to account for it, as Jibril ﷺ asserted to me.'"

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «الطَّاعُونُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْغَرَقُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْغَزْوُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنُ وَالنُّفَسَاءُ»
✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: 'The plague is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, military expedition is martyrdom, and the belly and the woman in childbirth.'"

«الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ شَهَادَةٌ وَالطَّاعُونُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْبَطْنُ شَهَادَةٌ وَالْمَرْأَةُ يَقْتُلُهَا وَلَدُهَا جُمْعًا شَهَادَةٌ»
✧ 'Being killed in the path of Allah is martyrdom, the plague is martyrdom, the belly is martyrdom, and the woman whose child kills her in a full pregnancy is martyrdom.'"

«كُنَّا نَغْزُو مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا لَنَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا هَذَا السَّمُرُ وَوَرَقُ الْحُبْلَةِ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَحَدَنَا لَيَضَعُ كَمَا تَضَعُ الشَّاةُ مَا لَهُ خِلْطٌ ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَتْ بَنُو أَسَدٍ يُعَزِّرُونِي لَقَدْ خِبْتُ إِذَنْ وَضَلَّ عَمَلِي»
✧ 'We used to raid with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having no food except this samur and the leaves of the hubala, until one of us would defecate as a sheep does, with no mixture. Then the Banu Asad came to reprimand me; I would then have failed and my deed gone astray.'"

«مَنْ غَزَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ لَا يَنْوِي فِي غَزَاتِهِ إِلَّا عِقَالًا فَلَهُ مَا نَوَى»
✧ 'Whoever raids in the path of Allah intending in his raid nothing but a hobbling camel rope, then he will have what he intended.'"
«الْغَزْوُ غَزْوَانِ فَأَمَّا مَنْ غَزَا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللَّهِ وَأَطَاعَ الْإِمَامَ وَأَنْفَقَ الْكَرِيمَةَ وَيَاسَرَ الشَّرِيكَ وَاجْتَنَبَ الْفَسَادَ فَإِنَّ نَوْمَهُ وَنُبْهَهُ أَجْرٌ كُلُّهُ وَأَمَّا مَنْ غَزَا فَخْرًا وَرِيَاءً وَسُمْعَةً وَعَصَى الْإِمَامَ وَأَفْسَدَ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَرْجِعُ بِالْكَفَافِ»
✧ 'Raiding is of two kinds: as for one who raids seeking the face of Allah, obeys the leader, spends his precious possessions, is easy with his partner, and avoids corruption, then his sleep and his wakefulness are all reward. As for one who raids for pride, showing off, reputation, disobeys the leader, and corrupts in the land, then he will not return with even enough.'"

«مَنْ لَمْ يَغْزُ أَوْ يُجَهِّزْ غَازِيًا أَوْ يَخْلُفْ غَازِيًا فِي أَهْلِهِ بِخَيْرٍ أَصَابَهُ اللَّهُ بِقَارِعَةٍ قَبْلَ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ»
✧ 'Whoever does not raid or equip a raider or look after a raider's family with good, Allah will strike him with a calamity before the Day of Resurrection.'"

«مَنْ جَهَّزَ غَازِيًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ خَلَفَهُ فِي أَهْلِهِ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِثْلَ أَجْرِهِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا يَنْقُصُ مِنْ أَجْرِ الْغَازِي شَيْئًا»
✧ 'Whoever equips a raider in the path of Allah or looks after his family, Allah will write for him the like of his reward, except that it does not diminish anything from the reward of the raider.'"

سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ يَقُولُ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} [النساء 95] دَعَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْدًا فَجَاءَ بِكَتِفٍ فَكَتَبَهَا وَشَكَا ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ ضَرَارَتَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ {لَا يَسْتَوِي الْقَاعِدُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ غَيْرُ أُولِي الضَّرَرِ} [النساء 95]
✧ I heard al-Bara' saying: When this verse was revealed—{Not equal are those who sit among the believers} [al-Nisa' 95]—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Zayd, and he brought a shoulder blade, and he wrote it. Ibn Umm Maktum complained of his disability, so it was revealed: {Not equal are those who sit among the believers, other than those with a handicap} [al-Nisa' 95]."

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ فِي بَيْتِهَا يَوْمًا فَاسْتَيْقَظَ وَهُوَ يَضْحَكُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَضْحَكَكَ؟ قَالَ «أُرِيتُ قَوْمًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَرْكَبُونَ ظَهْرَ هَذَا الْبَحْرِ كَالْمُلُوكِ عَلَى الْأَسِرَّةِ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ قَالَ «أَنْتِ مِنْهُمْ» ثُمَّ نَامَ أَيْضًا فَاسْتَيْقَظَ وَهُوَ يَضْحَكُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَضْحَكَكَ؟ قَالَ «أُرِيتُ قَوْمًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَرْكَبُونَ ظهر هَذَا الْبَحْرَ كَالْمُلُوكِ عَلَى الْأَسِرَّةِ» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ قَالَ «أَنْتِ مِنْهُمْ» ثُمَّ نَامَ أَيْضًا فَاسْتَيْقَظَ وَهُوَ يَضْحَكُ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَضْحَكَكَ؟ قَالَ «أُرِيتُ قَوْمًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَرْكَبُونَ هَذَا الْبَحْرَ كَالْمُلُوكِ عَلَى الْأَسِرَّةِ» قلت يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ قَالَ أَنْتِ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ قَالَ فَتَزَوَّجَهَا عُبَادَةُ بْنُ الصَّامِتِ فَغَزَا فِي الْبَحْرِ فَحَمَلَهَا مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا قُرِّبَتْ لَهَا بَغْلَةٌ لِتَرْكَبَهَا فَصَرَعَتْهَا فَدُقَّتْ عُنُقُهَا فَمَاتَتْ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ was in her house one day and woke up laughing. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was shown a people of my community riding the surface of this sea like kings on thrones.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah to make me one of them.' He said: 'You are one of them.' Then he slept again and woke up laughing. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was shown a people of my community riding the surface of this sea like kings on thrones.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah to make me one of them.' He said: 'You are one of them.' Then he slept again and woke up laughing. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what makes you laugh?' He said: 'I was shown a people of my community riding this sea like kings on thrones.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, supplicate Allah to make me one of them.' He said: 'You are one of the first ones.' He said: Then 'Ubadah b. al-Samit married her, and he raided in the sea and carried her with him. When they arrived, a mule was brought near for her to ride, and it threw her, and her neck was broken, and she died."

✧ 'I raided with the Prophet ﷺ in seven raids, treating the wounded or the injured, making food for them, and looking after their baggage.'"

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, he drew lots among his wives, and the lot fell upon Aisha and Hafsa, so they both went out with him.

سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ إِنِّي كُنْتُ كَتَمْتُكُمْ حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَرَاهِيَةَ تَفَرُّقِكُمْ عَنِّي ثُمَّ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُحَدِّثَكُمُوهُ لِيَخْتَارَ امْرُؤٌ لِنَفْسِهِ مَا بَدَا لَهُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «رِبَاطُ يَوْمٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ يَوْمٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ مِنَ الْمَنَازِلِ»
✧ I heard Uthman on the pulpit saying: I had concealed from you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, disliking that you disperse from me. Then it occurred to me to narrate it to you so that each person may choose for himself what seems best to him. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “A day of ribat in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days elsewhere.”
«كُلُّ مَيِّتٍ يُخْتَمُ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ إِلَّا الْمُرَابِطَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ يُجْرَى لَهُ عَمَلُهُ حَتَّى يُبْعَثَ»
✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Every deceased person is sealed upon his actions, except for the one who is stationed in the path of Allah, for his actions continue to be recorded for him until he is resurrected."

✧ A man said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to buy a horse; which one should I buy? He said: “Buy a dark bay with a white spot on its upper lip, white stockings, and a white right foreleg, or a chestnut with the same markings; you will gain booty and be safe.”

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُسَابِقُ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ الْمُضَمَّرَةِ مِنَ الْحَفْيَاءِ إِلَى الثَّنِيَّةِ وَالَّتِي لَمْ تُضَمَّرْ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ بَنِي زُرَيْقٍ وَأَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ فِيمَنْ سَابَقَ بِهَا»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to race the trained horses from al-Hafya' to the gorge, and the untrained ones from the gorge to the mosque of Banu Zurayq. Ibn Umar was among those who raced them.

أُجْرِيَتِ الْخَيْلُ فِي زَمَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ وَالْحَكَمُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ فَأَتَيْنَا الرِّهَانَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَتِ الْخَيْلُ قَالَ قُلْنَا لَوْ مِلْنَا إِلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ أَكَانُوا يُرَاهِنُونَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ وَهُوَ فِي قَصْرِهِ فِي الزَّاوِيَةِ فَسَأَلْنَاهُ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ يَا أَبَا حَمْزَةَ أَكُنْتُمْ تُرَاهِنُونَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُرَاهِنُ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ لَقَدْ رَاهَنَ وَاللَّهِ عَلَى فَرَسٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهُ سَبْحَةُ فَسَبَقَ النَّاسَ فَأنْهَشَّ لِذَلِكَ وَأَعْجَبَهُ»
✧ Horses were raced in the time of al-Hajjaj, and al-Hakam b. Ayyub was over Basra. We came to the race, and when the horses arrived, we said: Let us go to Anas b. Malik and ask him whether they used to bet on races during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We came to him in his palace in the corner and asked him, saying: O Abu Hamza, did you bet on races during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bet? He said: “Yes, by Allah, he bet on a horse of his called Subha; it outpaced the people, and he was delighted and pleased by that.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ مِنْ بَعْدِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي قَوْمًا يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَلَاقِيمَهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُونَ فِيهِ هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ» قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ قَالَ حُمَيْدٌ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الصَّامِتِ فَلَقِيتُ رَافِعًا أَخَا الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْغِفَارِيِّ فَحَدَّثْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ قَالَ رَافِعٌ وَأَنَا أَيْضًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “After me, there will be a people from my nation who recite the Quran but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion as an arrow goes out of the game, then they will not return to it. They are the worst of creation and creatures.” Sulayman said: Humayd said: Abdullah b. al-Samit said: I met Rafi', the brother of al-Hakam b. Amr al-Ghifari, and narrated this hadith to him. Rafi' said: I also heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
