16. Blood Money
✧ Whoever is afflicted by blood or injury—and injury is a wound—has the choice of one of three things. If he wants a fourth, then restrain his hands: either he retaliates, or he forgives, or he takes the blood money. If he takes any of that and then transgresses after that, then for him is the Fire, abiding therein eternally.
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to the people of Yemen, and in his letter was: “Whoever kills a believer deliberately with clear evidence, then it is retaliation by his hand, unless the heirs of the slain person agree otherwise.” Abu Muhammad said: “Iʿtabaṭa means he killed without cause.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2398Sahih

✧ Abdullah was attacked and killed, and his neck was broken until it was dislocated, then he was thrown into one of the watering places of Khaybar. His companions were called for help and they took him out and buried him. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah. His brother Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl came forward—he had seniority with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—and his two cousins were with him, Huwayyisah b. Masʿud and Muhayyisah. Abd al-Rahman spoke, and he was the youngest of them in age, but he was the blood relative and had seniority among the people. When he spoke, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The elder, the elder.” So he stepped back, and Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah spoke, then he spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Name your killer, then swear fifty oaths against him, and we will hand him over to you.” They said: O Messenger of Allah, we cannot swear about what we do not know; we do not know who killed him except that the Jews are our enemy and he was killed among them. He said, “Then they will swear to you by Allah that they are innocent of the blood of your companion, and then they will be free of it.” They said: We will not accept the oaths of the Jews, for there is nothing greater among them than to swear falsely. He said, “Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid his blood money from his own resources: one hundred camels.”

✧ A slave girl had her head crushed between two stones. It was said to her: Who did this to you? Was it so-and-so? Was it so-and-so? Until the Jew was named. She nodded her head. He was sent for and brought, and he confessed. So the Prophet ﷺ ordered that his head be crushed between two stones.
Sunan ad-Darimi 2401Sahih
✧ I said to 'Ali: O Commander of the Faithful, have you learned anything of revelation other than what is in the Book of Allah, the Exalted? He said: No, by the One who split the grain and created the soul, I do not know it except an understanding that Allah gives a man in the Qur'an, and what is in the scroll. I said: And what is in the scroll? He said: The blood money, the ransoming of the captive, and a Muslim should not be killed for a polytheist.

✧ I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ when the killer was brought to him, being led in a leather strap. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the guardian of the slain: 'Do you pardon?' He said: No. He said: 'Then will you take the blood money?' He said: No. He said: 'Then will you kill him?' He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If you pardon him, he will bear your sin and the sin of your companion.' He said: So he left him. He said: Then I saw him dragging his leather strap, having pardoned him.
Sunan ad-Darimi 2405Sahih

Sunan ad-Darimi 2430Sahih
✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a room, and with him was a comb with which he was scratching his head, a man looked in upon him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “If I knew that you were looking, I would have thrust it into your eyes. Permission was made only for the sake of looking.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2431Sahih
✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say on the day Makkah was conquered: “No Quraishi shall be killed patiently after this day until the Day of Resurrection.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2432Sahih
✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned something similar. Abu Muhammad said: “They interpreted that as meaning that no Quraishi is killed for disbelief, meaning a Quraishi will not disbelieve after that day. As for retribution, he may be killed.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2433Sahih
✧ I came to Madinah with a son of mine, and we had not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I went to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out wearing two green garments. When I saw him, I recognized him by the description. I went up to him, and he said: “Who is this with you?” I said: “My son, by the Lord of the Ka‘bah.” He said: “Your son?” I said: “I testify to it.” He said: “Indeed this son of yours will not commit a crime against you, nor will you commit a crime against him.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2434Sahih
انْطَلَقْتُ مَعَ أَبِي نَحْوَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِأَبِي «ابْنُكَ هَذَا؟» فَقَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ قَالَ «حَقًّا؟» قَالَ «حَقًّا أَشْهَدُ بِهِ» قَالَ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ضَاحِكًا مِنْ ثَبَتِ شَبَهِي فِي أَبِي وَمِنْ حَلِفِ أَبِي عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ ابْنَكَ هَذَا لَا يَجْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَلَا تَجْنِي عَلَيْهِ» قَالَ وَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ {«وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى»}
✧ I set out with my father toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to my father: “Is this your son?” He said: “Yes, by the Lord of the Ka‘bah.” He said: “Truly?” He said: “Truly, I testify to it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, laughing at how strong my resemblance to my father was, and at my father’s oath about me. Then he said: “Indeed this son of yours will not commit a crime against you, nor will you commit a crime against him.” And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: “And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.”
