✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to the people of Yemen, and in his letter was: “Whoever kills a believer deliberately with clear evidence, then it is retaliation by his hand, unless the heirs of the slain person agree otherwise.” Abu Muhammad said: “Iʿtabaṭa means he killed without cause.”

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationI hope that it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391

machine translationExcellent in its chain of transmission (jayyid al-isnād).

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391

machine translationIt has been transmitted with chains through good (ḥasan) routes, the strongest of which is the narration of Abū Dāwūd from al-Zuhrī.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationʿAbd al-Ḥaqq said: This Sulaymān b. Dāwūd, who narrates this copy from al-Zuhrī, is weak (ḍaʿīf), and it is said that he is Sulaymān b. Arqam. Ibn ʿAdī disputed this and said: This is a mistake; he is only Sulaymān b. Dāwūd, and al-Ḥakam b. Mūsā has transmitted it excellently.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAbū Zurʿah said: I presented it to Aḥmad, and he said: This Sulaymān b. Dāwūd is nothing. Ibn Ḥibbān said: Sulaymān b. Dāwūd al-Yamāmī is weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391

machine translationThis ḥadīth is established and preserved (maḥfūẓ), except that we see it as a book not heard from those above al-Zuhrī.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391

machine translationYaʿqūb b. Sufyān said: Among all the transmitted books I know of no book more sound than this book of ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, for the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Successors would refer to it and leave their own opinion. Al-Ḥākim said: ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and the leading authority of his age, al-Zuhrī, bore witness to the soundness of this book. Then he related that with his chain to the two of them.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe ḥadīth of ʿAmr b. Ḥazm: Sulaymān b. Dāwūd alone narrated it as raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ) and connected, from al-Zuhrī, and he is not a proof in what he alone narrates.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391

machine translationThe scroll of ʿAmr b. Ḥazm is broken in its chain (munqaṭiʿ); no proof can be established by it, and Sulaymān b. Dāwūd is agreed upon as abandoned.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationFor when he mentioned the ḥadīth of Sulaymān from al-Zuhrī, he said: It is not established from him. Someone other than al-Ḥakam b. Mūsā said that he is Sulaymān b. Arqam. When al-Nasāʾī narrated this ḥadīth by the route of Yaḥyā b. Ḥamzah from Sulaymān b. Dāwūd, then narrated it from the ḥadīth of Yaḥyā from Sulaymān b. Arqam, he said: This is closer to the correct view. And if what they said about Sulaymān is correct, the route of Isḥāq overrules their statement and weakens it.

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391
  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThis ḥadīth of the charities (ṣadaqāt), which Yaḥyā b. Ḥamzah narrates, I hope that it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in مسند الدارمي, p. 2391
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
