✧ Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded me to recite the Qur'an to you. He said: Then he recited to him: "Lam yakun" and he recited to him: "Indeed, the custom of the religion with Allah is the Hanifiyyah, not the polytheistic, nor the Jewish, nor the Christian, and whoever does good, it will never be denied to him." And he recited to him: "If the son of Adam had a valley, he would seek a second to it; and if he were given a second, he would seek a third to it; and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah turns in mercy to whoever repents."

✧ O Zirr, how many verses do you read in Surah al-Ahzab? He said: I said: Such-and-such verses. He said: It used to rival Surah al-Baqarah, and we used to recite in it: "And the old man and the old woman, if they commit adultery, stone them both absolutely, as a punishment from Allah and His Messenger." Then it was lifted among what was lifted.

أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ ﷺ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عِنْدَ أَحْجَارِ الْمِرَى، فَقَالَ لَهُ: يَا جِبْرِيلُ، إِنِّي بُعِثْتُ إِلَى أُمَّةٍ أُمِّيَّةٍ، فِيهِمُ الْعَجُوزُ، وَالشَّيْخُ، وَالْغُلَامُ، وَالْجَارِيَةُ، وَالرَّجُلُ الْقَاسِي الَّذِي لَمْ يَقْرَأْ كِتَابًا قَطُّ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ جِبْرِيلُ: إِنَّ الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ
✧ That Gabriel ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ at the stones of al-Mira', and he said to him: O Gabriel, I have been sent to an unlettered nation, among them the old woman, the old man, the boy, the girl, and the harsh man who has never read a book at all. He said: Then Gabriel said: The Qur'an was sent down in seven modes.

" لَمَّا نَزَلَ بِآدَمَ ﷺ الْمَوْتُ، قَالَ: أَيْ بُنَيَّ، إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي مِنْ ثَمَرِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَانْطَلَقَ بَنُوهُ يَلْتَمِسُونَ، فَرَأَوُا الْمَلَائِكَةَ، فَقَالُوا: أَيْنَ تُرِيدُونَ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ ؟ فَقَالُوا: اشْتَهَى أَبُونَا مِنْ ثَمَرَةِ الْجَنَّةِ، فَانْطَلَقْنَا نَطْلُبُ ذَاكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: ارْجِعُوا فَقَدْ أُمِرَ بِقَبْضِ أَبِيكُمْ، فَأَقْبَلُوا حَتَّى انْتَهَوْا إِلَى آدَمَ ﷺ، فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُمْ حَوَّاءُ عَرَفَتْهُمْ، فَلَصِقَتْ بِآدَمَ، فَقَالَ: إِلَيْكِ عَنِّي، فَمِنْ قِبَلَكِ أُتِيتُ، دَعِينِي وَمَلَائِكَةَ رَبِّي، قَالَ: فَقَبَضُوهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَغَسَّلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَكَفَّنُوهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَحَنَّطُوهُ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ، وَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالُوا: يَا بَنِي آدَمَ، هَذِهِ سُنَّتُكُمْ فِي مَوْتَاكُمْ، وَهَذَا سَبِيلُكُمْ
✧ "When death came to Adam ﷺ, he said: O my sons, I long for fruit of Paradise. So his sons went seeking, and they saw the angels, and they said: Where are you heading, O sons of Adam? They said: Our father has longed for fruit of Paradise, so we went to seek that for him. They said: Return, for the taking of your father's soul has been commanded. So they came back until they reached Adam ﷺ. When Hawwa' saw them, she recognized them, and she clung to Adam. He said: Away from me, for it is from your side that I have been brought to this; leave me with the angels of my Lord. He said: Then they took his soul while they watched, and they washed him while they watched, and they shrouded him while they watched, and they embalmed him while they watched, and they prayed over him. Then they turned to them and said: O sons of Adam, this is your sunnah for your dead, and this is your way."

✧ "O Abu al-Mundhir, which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?" I said: The Verse of the Throne. He said to me: "May knowledge be pleasurable to you, Abu al-Mundhir; by the One in whose hand is my soul, it has a tongue on the Day of Resurrection that glorifies Allah at the leg of the Throne."

كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ لُحْمَتِي، وَكَانَ بَيْتُهُ أَقْصَى بَيْتٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ فِي الْأَشْيَاخِ: مَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الْجِسْرِ أَوْ أَبْعَدُ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَاصِمٌ: فَذَكَرْتُ لِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، فَقَالَ: إِنْ كَانَ أَقْصَى بَيْتٍ بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَهُوَ أَبْعَدُ مِنَ الْجِسْرِ، فَقَالَ فِي آخِرِ ذَلِكَ: إِنَّمَا كُنْتُ أَحْتَسِبُ الْأَثَرَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَكَ مَا احْتَسَبْتَ
✧ There was a man from my close kin, and his house was the farthest house in Madinah. He said: Abu Uthman said, while he was narrating among the elders: What is between you and the bridge, or farther. He said: Asim said: I mentioned that to Muhammad b. Sirin, and he said: If it was the farthest house in Madinah, then it is farther than the bridge. Then at the end of that he said: I had only been seeking the reward for (walking) the distance. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: You shall have what you sought.

غَدَوْتُ أَنَا وَزَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ، وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، فَوَجَدْتُ سَوْطًا فَأَخَذْتُهُ، فَقَالَا لِي: أَلْقِهِ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا، وَلَكِنِّي أُعَرِّفُهُ، فَإِنْ وَجَدْتُ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهُ وَإِلَّا اسْتَمْتَعْتُ بِهِ، فَأَبَيْتُ عَلَيْهِمَا، فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا مِنْ غَزَاتِنَا قُضِيَ لِي أَنِّي حَجَجْتُ، فَأَتَيْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَلَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِشَأْنِ السَّوْطِ وَبِقَوْلِهِمَا، فَقَالَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ: وَجَدْتُ صُرَّةً فِيهَا مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلًا، فَعَرَّفْتُهَا، فَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَنْ يَعْرِفُهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، فَقَالَ: " احْفَظْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا "، قَالَ: فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُ بِهَا. قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: فَلَقِيتُ سَلَمَةَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ: لَا أَدْرِي ثَلَاثَةَ أَحْوَالٍ أَوْ حَوْلًا وَاحِدًا، فَأَعْجَبَنِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ، فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي صَادِقٍ: تَعَالَ فَاسْمَعْهُ مِنْهُ
✧ I set out early with Zayd b. Suhan and Salman b. Rabi'ah, and I found a whip and picked it up. They said to me: Throw it down. I said: No, but I will announce it; if I find someone who recognizes it, (good), otherwise I will make use of it. I refused them both. When we returned from our military expedition, it was decreed for me that I performed Hajj. So I came to Madinah and met Ubayy b. Ka'b. I told him about the matter of the whip and what they had said. Ubayy b. Ka'b said: I found a purse containing one hundred dinars at the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: Announce it for a year. I announced it, but found no one who recognized it, three times. He said: Keep note of its count, its tie, and its container; if its owner comes, (give it to him), otherwise make use of it. He said: So I made use of it. Shu'bah said: I met Salamah after that and he said: I do not know whether it was three years or one year. This hadith pleased me, so I said to Abu Sadiq: Come and hear it from him.

" كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَسَافَرَ عَامًا فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ مِنْ قَابِلٍ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا
✧ He used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. Then he traveled one year and did not observe i'tikaf. The following year, he observed i'tikaf for twenty days.

صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: " أَشَاهِدٌ فُلَانٌ ؟ "، قَالُوا: لَا، قَالَ: إِنَّ هَاتَيْنِ الصَّلَاتَيْنِ - يَعْنِي الْعِشَاءَ وَالصُّبْحَ - أَثْقَلُ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِيهِمَا لَأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا، وَالصَّفُّ الْأَوَّلُ عَلَى مِثْلِ صَفِّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ، وَلَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ فَضِيلَتَهُ لَابْتَدَرْتُمُوهُ، وَصَلَاةُ الرَّجُلِ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ أَزْكَى مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَحْدَهُ، وَصَلَاتُهُ مَعَ الرَّجُلَيْنِ أَزْكَى مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ مَعَ الرَّجُلِ، وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرَ فَهُوَ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in prayer and said: Is so-and-so present? They said: No. He said: These two prayers – meaning 'Isha' and Fajr – are the heaviest upon the hypocrites. If they knew what was in them, they would come to them even if they had to crawl. The first row is like the row of the angels. If you knew its excellence, you would race to it. A man's prayer with another man is purer than his prayer alone, and his prayer with two men is purer than his prayer with one man. Whatever is more is more beloved to God, Mighty and Majestic.

قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ لِلِقَاءِ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ، فَلَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِمْ أَحَدٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ لِقَاءً مِنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، فَقُمْتُ فِي الصَّفِّ الْأَوَّلِ، وَخَرَجَ عُمَرُ مَعَ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَنَظَرَ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ غَيْرِي، فَنَحَّانِي وَقَامَ فِي مَكَانِي، فَمَا عَقَلْتُ صَلَاتِي، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ لِي: يَا فَتَى، لَا يَسُوءُكَ اللهُ، فَإِنِّي لَمْ آتِ الَّذِي أَتَيْتُ بِجَهَالَةٍ، وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَنَا: كُونُوا فِي الصَّفِّ الَّذِي يَلِينِي، وَإِنِّي نَظَرْتُ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَعَرَفْتُهُمْ غَيْرَكَ، ثُمَّ حَدَّثَ، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ الرِّجَالَ مَتَحَتْ أَعْنَاقَهَا إِلَى شَيْءٍ مُتُوحَهَا إِلَيْهِ، فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: هَلَكَ أَهْلُ الْعُقْدَةِ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ - قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا - هَلَكُوا وَأَهْلَكُوا، أَمَا إِنِّي لَا آسَى عَلَيْهِمْ، وَلَكِنِّي آسَى عَلَى مَنْ يَهْلِكُونَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَإِذَا الرَّجُلُ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ
✧ I came to Madinah to meet the companions of Muhammad ﷺ, and there was no one among them I was more eager to meet than Ubayy b. Ka'b. I stood in the first row, and Umar came out with the companions of Muhammad ﷺ. Then a man came and looked at the faces of the people and recognized them, except me. He moved me aside and stood in my place. I did not understand my prayer. When he had prayed, he said to me: Young man, may God not grieve you. I did not do what I did out of ignorance, but the Messenger of God ﷺ said to us: Be in the row that is closest to me. I looked at the faces of the people and recognized them, except you. Then he began to speak, and I have never seen men stretch their necks toward anything as they stretched them toward him. I heard him say: The people of the knot have perished, by the Lord of the Ka'bah – he said it three times – they have perished and caused others to perish. Indeed, I do not grieve for them, but I grieve for those Muslims whom they cause to perish. And that man was Ubayy b. Ka'b.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ عِنْدَ أَضَاةِ بَنِي غِفَارٍ، فَأَتَاهُ جِبْرِيلُ ﷺ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ وَاحِدٍ، قَالَ: أَسْأَلُ اللهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ، فَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الثَّانِيَةَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفَيْنِ، قَالَ: " أَسْأَلُ اللهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ، وَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ "، ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أَحْرُفٍ، قَالَ: " أَسْأَلُ اللهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ، وَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لَا تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ "، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الرَّابِعَةَ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُقْرِئَ أُمَّتَكَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ، فَأَيُّمَا حَرْفٍ قَرَءُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَدْ أَصَابُوا
✧ The Prophet ﷺ was at the water of Banu Ghifar when Jibril ﷺ came to him and said: God, Mighty and Majestic, commands you to teach your community the Qur'an according to one harf. He said: I ask God for His pardon and forgiveness, for my community cannot bear that. Then he came to him a second time and said: God, Mighty and Majestic, commands you to teach your community the Qur'an according to two harfs. He said: I ask God for His pardon and forgiveness, for my community cannot bear that. Then he came to him a third time and said: God commands you to teach your community the Qur'an according to three harfs. He said: I ask God for His pardon and forgiveness, for my community cannot bear that. Then he came a fourth time and said: God commands you to teach your community the Qur'an according to seven harfs. Whichever harf they recite according to, they have hit the mark.
