✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he said to him: How will you judge if a case is presented to you? He said: I will judge by the Book of God. He said: And if you do not find it in the Book of God? He said: I will judge by the Sunnah of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: And if you do not find it in the Sunnah of the Messenger of God? He said: I will exert my own judgment and spare no effort. He said: Then he struck his hand on my chest and said: Praise be to God who has guided the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ to what pleases the Messenger of God.

✧ O Messenger of God, tell me of a deed that will admit me into Paradise. He said: Excellent, excellent! You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for the one for whom God makes it easy. Perform the prescribed prayer, give the obligatory zakah. Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its highest peak? The head of the matter is Islam; whoever submits is safe. Its pillar is prayer, and its highest peak is jihad in the path of God. Shall I not point you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin, and a servant's standing in the depths of the night. Then he recited: 'Their sides forsake their beds...' to the end of the verse. Shall I not tell you of what controls all of that? He said: Then a rider or a band of riders appeared, and the Messenger of God ﷺ pointed with his hand to his tongue. I said: Will we be held accountable for what we say with our tongues? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu'adh! Is there anything that casts people on their faces into the Fire except the harvests of their tongues?

✧ I entered the mosque and there were about twenty of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ in it, and among them was a man with dark, wide eyes and brilliant front teeth. Whenever they differed about something, he would state an opinion and they would adopt his opinion. I asked about him and found he was Mu'adh b. Jabal. The next day I entered the mosque and found him standing praying toward a pillar. I sat close to him, and when I did that he shortened his prayer. I said: By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah's majesty. He said: "By Allah?" I said: By Allah. He said: "Those who love one another for the sake of Allah's majesty will be in Allah's shade—I think he said on the Day of Resurrection—on the Day when there is no shade except His shade. The prophets, martyrs, and righteous will envy them for their nearness to Allah."
