✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī claimed, on the authority of Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described to his companions Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā when he saw them on that night. He said: "As for Ibrāhīm, I have never seen a man more resembling your companion, nor is your companion more resembling him than he. As for Mūsā, he was a brown-skinned, tall, lean man with curly hair and a hooked nose, as if he were from the men of Shanūʾah. As for ʿĪsā son of Maryam, he was a ruddy man, between short and tall, with lank hair and many moles on his face, as if he had just come out of a bathhouse—you would think his head was dripping water, though there was no water on it. The man among you most resembling him is ʿUrwah b. Masʿūd al-Thaqafī."

✧ [ʿAlī's description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Hishām said: The description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was, according to what ʿUmar, the client of Ghufrah, mentioned from Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, who said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ﷺ, when he described the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: He was neither excessively tall and lanky, nor short and stubby. He was of medium stature among his people. He did not have tightly curled hair nor lank hair; his hair was wavy, neither curly nor straight. He was not fat-faced nor round-faced. He was fair with a reddish tinge, with very dark eyes, long eyelashes, prominent joints and shoulder-blades, a fine line of hair from the chest to the navel, and he was not hairy; his palms and feet were thick and rough. When he walked, he lifted his feet firmly, as though walking downhill. When he turned, he turned with his whole body. Between his shoulder-blades was the seal of prophethood, and he ﷺ is the seal of the prophets. He was the most generous of people in giving, the most courageous of people in heart, the most truthful of people in speech, the most faithful of people in fulfilling trusts, the gentlest of them in nature, and the most honorable of them in companionship. Whoever saw him unexpectedly was awed by him, and whoever associated with him loved him. His describer would say: I have never seen before him or after him anyone like him, ﷺ

✧ Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: Among what reached me about Umm Hāniʾ bt. Abī Ṭālib ؓ—and her name was Hind—concerning the night journey of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is that she used to say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not taken on the night journey except while he was in my house. He slept at my place that night in my house. He prayed the latter ʿishāʾ, then slept and we slept. Then, shortly before dawn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke us. When he prayed the morning prayer and we prayed with him, he said: “O Umm Hāniʾ, I prayed the latter ʿishāʾ with you as you saw in this valley, then I went to the Holy House (Jerusalem) and prayed in it, and then I have prayed the morning prayer with you now as you see.” Then he rose to leave, and I took hold of the edge of his cloak, and his belly was uncovered as though it were a folded Egyptian linen. I said to him: “O Prophet of Allah, do not tell this to the people, lest they call you a liar and harm you.” He said: “By Allah, I will tell them of it.” She said: I said to an Abyssinian slave girl of mine: “Woe to you! Follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until you hear what he says to the people and what they say to him.” When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the people, he told them, and they were astonished and said: “What is the sign of that, O Muḥammad? For we have never heard the like of this before.” He said: “The sign of that is that I passed by the camels of Banū so-and-so in such-and-such a valley. The sound of the animal startled them, and a camel of theirs bolted. I pointed it out to them while I was heading toward Syria. Then I turned back, and when I was at Ḍajānan, I passed by the camels of Banū so-and-so. I found the people sleeping, and they had a vessel with water in it which they had covered with something. I uncovered its covering and drank what was in it, then I covered it again as it was. And the sign of that is that their caravan is now descending from al-Bayḍāʾ, the mountain pass of al-Tanʿīm, led by a grayish camel carrying two sacks, one black and the other speckled.” She said: The people rushed to the mountain pass, and the first thing they met was the camel as he had described to them. They asked them about the vessel, and they told them that they had left it full of water and covered it, and that when they woke they found it covered as they had covered it, and did not find any water in it. They asked the others who were in Makkah, and they said: “By Allah, he has spoken the truth. We were startled in the valley he mentioned, and a camel of ours bolted, and we heard the voice of a man calling us to it until we caught it.”

✧ The story of the Miʿrāj [The ḥadīth of al-Khudrī concerning the Miʿrāj]. Ibn Isḥāq said: And he whom I do not suspect narrated to me from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī ؓ that he said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: When I had finished what was in the House of the Holy Sanctuary, the Miʿrāj was brought, and I never saw anything more beautiful than it. It is that to which your dying one stretches his eyes when he is attended. My companion caused me to ascend in it until he brought me to a gate among the gates of heaven, called the Gate of the Guardians. Over it was an angel among the angels, called Ismāʿīl, under whose hands were twelve thousand angels, under the hands of each angel among them twelve thousand angels. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said when he related this ḥadīth: 'And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He.' When he entered with me, he said: 'Who is this, O Jibrīl?' He said: 'This is Muḥammad.' He said: 'Has he been sent?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: Then he supplicated for good on my behalf and said it.

✧ [The keeper of the Fire not smiling at the Messenger ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the people of knowledge related to me, from one who related to him, from the Messenger of God ﷺ, that he said: The angels met me when I entered the lowest heaven, and no angel met me except smiling, rejoicing, saying good and supplicating with it, until an angel from among the angels met me. He said the like of what they said, and supplicated with the like of what they supplicated, except that he did not smile, and I did not see from him of cheerfulness the like of what I saw from others. I said to Jibrīl: O Jibrīl, who is this angel who said to me as the angels said, but did not smile (at me), and I did not see from him of cheerfulness the like of what I saw from them? He said: Jibrīl said to me: Indeed, if he had smiled at anyone before you, or were to smile at anyone after you, he would smile at you, but he does not smile. This is Mālik, the keeper of the Fire. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: I said to Jibrīl—and he is, from God the Exalted, in the position described to you, obeyed there, trustworthy—Will you not command him to show me the Fire? He said: Yes. O Mālik, show Muḥammad the Fire. He said: So he uncovered its covering from it, and it boiled and rose up until I thought it would surely seize what I saw. He said: I said to Jibrīl: O Jibrīl, command him to return it to its place. He said: So he commanded him, and he said to it: Subside. And it returned to its place from which it had come forth. I likened its return only to the falling of a shadow, until when it entered from where it had come forth, he restored its covering over it. [Returning to the ḥadīth of al-Khudrī about the Miʿrāj] Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said in his ḥadīth: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: When I entered the lowest heaven, I saw in it a man sitting, to whom the souls of the children of Ādam were presented. He would say of some of them, when presented to him, good and rejoice at it, and say: A good soul came forth from a good body. And he would say of some of them, when presented to him: Uff, and frown with his face, and say: A foul soul came forth from a foul body. He said: I said: Who is this, O Jibrīl? He said: This is your father Ādam. The souls of his descendants are presented to him. When the soul of a believer among them passes by him, he rejoices at it and says: A good soul came forth from a good body. And when the soul of a disbeliever among them passes by him, he says uff at it and dislikes it, and that grieves him, and he says: A foul soul came forth from a foul body.

In their hands were pieces of fire like pebbles, which they threw into their mouths, and they came out from their posteriors. I said: Who are these, O Jibrīl? He said: These are those who consume the property of orphans unjustly. [The description of those who consume usury] He said: Then I saw men with bellies the like of which I have never seen before, on the path of the family of Pharaoh. They pass over them like crazed camels when they are brought to the Fire, trampling them, unable to move from that place of theirs. He said: I said: Who are these, O Jibrīl? He said: These are those who consume usury.

✧ [Return to the hadith of al-Khudrī about the Miʿrāj] Then he returned to the hadith of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. He said: Then he took me up to the second heaven, and there were the two cousins: ʿĪsā b. Maryam and Yaḥyā b. Zakariyyā. He said: Then he took me up to the third heaven, and there was a man whose appearance was like the moon on the night of the full moon. He said: I said, "Who is this, O Jibrīl?" He said, "This is your brother Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb." He said: Then he took me up to the fourth heaven, and there was a man, so I asked him, "Who is he?" He said, "This is Idrīs." He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: "And We raised him to a high station" (Q 19:57). He said: Then he took me up to the fifth heaven, and there was an elderly man with white hair and beard, great in beard, and I had never seen a more handsome elderly man than him. He said: I said, "Who is this, O Jibrīl?" He said, "This is the beloved one among his people, Hārūn b. ʿImrān." He said: Then he took me up to the sixth heaven, and there was a dark-skinned, tall man with a hooked nose, as if he were from the men of Shanūʾah. I said to him, "Who is this, O Jibrīl?" He said, "This is your brother Mūsā b. ʿImrān." Then he took me up to the seventh heaven, and there was an elderly man seated on a chair beside the door of the Much-Frequented House (al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr), into which seventy thousand angels enter every day, and they do not return to it until the Day of Resurrection. I had never seen a man more resembling your companion (the Prophet ﷺ), nor did your companion resemble anyone more than him. He said: I said, "Who is this, O Jibrīl?" He said, "This is your father Ibrāhīm." He said: Then he entered me into Paradise, and I saw in it a dark-lipped maiden, and I asked her, "To whom do you belong?" And she had pleased me when I saw her. She said, "To Zayd b. Ḥārithah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave glad tidings of her to Zayd b. Ḥārithah. Ibn Isḥāq said: And from the hadith of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd ؓ, from the Prophet ﷺ, in what has reached me, that Jibrīl did not ascend with him to any heaven of the heavens except that they said to him when he sought permission to enter it: "Who is this, O Jibrīl?" He would say, "Muḥammad." They would say, "Has he been sent?" He would say, "Yes." They would say, "May Allah greet him as a brother and companion," until he reached with him the seventh heaven, then he took him to his Lord, and He imposed upon him fifty prayers every day.

✧ [Mūsā's counsel to the Messenger, peace be upon them both, concerning the lightening of the prayer] He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: So I turned back. When I passed by Mūsā b. ʿImrān—and what an excellent companion he was for you—he asked me how much prayer had been made obligatory upon me. I said: Fifty prayers every day. He said: Prayer is heavy, and your community is weak, so return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you and for your community. So I returned and asked my Lord to lighten it for me and for my community, and He reduced it from me by ten. Then I departed and passed by Mūsā, and he said the like of that to me. So I returned and asked my Lord, and He reduced it from me by ten. Then I departed and passed by Mūsā, and he said the like of that to me. So I returned and asked Him, and He reduced it from me by ten. Then he did not cease saying the like of that to me every time I returned to him, saying: Return and ask, until I reached the point that He had reduced that from me except for five prayers in every day and night. Then I returned to Mūsā, and he said the like of that to me. I said: I have gone back to my Lord and asked Him until I felt ashamed before Him, and I will not do it. So whoever of you performs them with faith in them and seeking reward for them, he will have the reward of fifty obligatory prayers.

✧ The mention of the Isrāʾ and the Miʿrāj. Ibn Hishām said: Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bakkāʾī narrated to us, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Muṭṭalibī, who said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ was taken by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, which is the House of the Sanctuary (Bayt al-Maqdis) in Aelia. Islam had by then spread in Makkah among Quraysh and among all the tribes. Ibn Isḥāq said: The account, as it reached me, of his night journey ﷺ comes from ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, ʿĀʾishah the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Ḥasan (al-Baṣrī), Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, Qatādah, and others among the people of knowledge, and Umm Hāniʾ bt. Abī Ṭālib. What has been brought together in this account is such that each of them relates part of what is mentioned of his affair when he was taken by night ﷺ, and what occurred during his night journey. What is related about it is a trial, a testing, and a matter from the command of God (mighty and glorious be He) within His power and His dominion. In it is a lesson for those of understanding, and guidance, mercy, and steadfastness for those who believe and affirm, and who are certain of the command of God, glorified and exalted be He. So He, glorified and exalted be He, took him by night however He willed, to show him of His signs what He intended, until he beheld what he beheld of His command, His mighty dominion, and His power by which He does whatever He wills.

✧ Narration of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd concerning his night journey ﷺ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd — as far as it has reached me from him — used to say: The Messenger of God ﷺ was brought al-Burāq — the riding beast that the prophets before him used to be mounted upon, which places its hoof at the limit of its gaze — and he was mounted upon it. Then his companion set out with him, and he saw the signs between the heaven and the earth, until he reached the Holy House (Bayt al-Maqdis). There he found Abraham the Friend, Moses, and Jesus among a group of prophets who had been gathered for him, and he led them in prayer. Then he was brought three vessels: a vessel containing milk, a vessel containing wine, and a vessel containing water. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: I heard a speaker saying when they were presented to me: If he takes the water, he will drown and his community will drown; if he takes the wine, he will go astray and his community will go astray; if he takes the milk, he will be guided and his community will be guided. He said: So I took the vessel of milk and drank from it. Then Gabriel ﷺ said to me: You have been guided and your community has been guided, O Muhammad.

✧ [The tradition of al-Ḥasan concerning his nocturnal journey ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: I was told on the authority of al-Ḥasan that he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: While I was sleeping in the Ḥijr, Gabriel came to me and nudged me with his foot. I sat up but saw nothing, so I returned to my resting place. He came to me a second time and nudged me with his foot. I sat up but saw nothing, so I returned to my resting place. He came to me a third time and nudged me with his foot. I sat up, and he took hold of my upper arm. I rose with him, and he brought me out to the gate of the mosque. There was a white beast, between a mule and a donkey, with two wings on its thighs with which it propelled its legs. It placed its foreleg at the limit of its gaze. He mounted me upon it, then went out with me, neither outstripping me nor being outstripped by me.

✧ [The ḥadīth of Qatādah concerning his nocturnal journey ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: I was told on the authority of Qatādah that he said: I was told that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: When I drew near to it to mount it, it shied. Gabriel placed his hand on its forelock, then said: Are you not ashamed, O Burāq, of what you are doing? For by God, no servant of God has ever ridden you before Muḥammad who was more honored by Him than he. He said: It felt ashamed until it broke out in sweat, then it stood still until I mounted it.

✧ [Returning to the hadith of al-Ḥasan regarding his ﷺ night journey and the reason Abū Bakr was named al-Ṣiddīq] Al-Ḥasan said in his narration: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went forth, and Gabriel ﷺ went with him, until he brought him to the House of the Sanctuary (Bayt al-Maqdis). There he found Abraham, Moses, and Jesus among a group of prophets. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them and prayed with them. Then two vessels were brought: in one was wine, and in the other milk. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the vessel of milk and drank from it, and left the vessel of wine. He said: Gabriel said to him: You have been guided to the fiṭrah, and your community has been guided, O Muhammad, and wine has been forbidden to you. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to Makkah. When morning came, he went to Quraysh and told them the news. Most of the people said: This, by Allah, is a clear matter. By Allah, a caravan is driven for a month from Makkah to Syria going out, and a month coming back. Can Muhammad go that distance in a single night and return to Makkah? He said: Many of those who had accepted Islam apostatized. The people went to Abū Bakr and said to him: What do you think, O Abū Bakr, of your companion? He claims that he came this night to the House of the Sanctuary, prayed in it, and returned to Makkah. He said: Abū Bakr said to them: You are lying about him. They said: Yes, there he is in the mosque, telling the people about it. Abū Bakr said: By Allah, if he said it, he has spoken truly. What amazes you about that? By Allah, he tells me that news comes to him from Allah from heaven to earth in an hour of night or day, and I believe him. This is more extraordinary than what you marvel at. Then he went until he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Prophet of Allah, did you tell these people that you came to the House of the Sanctuary this night? He said: Yes. He said: O Prophet of Allah, describe it to me, for I have been there. Al-Ḥasan said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It was raised up for me until I looked at it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to describe it to Abū Bakr, and Abū Bakr said: You have spoken truly. I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. Each time he described something of it to him, he said: You have spoken truly. I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah. When he finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abū Bakr: And you, O Abū Bakr, are al-Ṣiddīq? On that day he named him al-Ṣiddīq. Al-Ḥasan said: Allah (Exalted is He) sent down concerning those who apostatized from their Islam for that reason: And We made not the vision which We showed you except as a trial for mankind, and the accursed tree in the Qurʾān. And We warn them, but it increases them not except in great transgression. This is the hadith of al-Ḥasan concerning the night journey of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and what is included in it from the hadith of Qatādah.

✧ The permissibility that the Isrāʾ may have been a vision. Neither of their statements is denied, because of al-Ḥasan’s saying: This verse was revealed concerning that—the saying of Allāh, blessed and exalted: “And We made not the vision which We showed you except as a trial for mankind” (Q 17:60)—and because of the saying of Allāh, exalted, in the report about Ibrāhīm ﷺ when he said to his son: “O my son, I see in sleep that I am slaughtering you” (Q 37:102), then he proceeded with that. Thus I know that revelation from Allāh comes to the prophets both awake and asleep. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ—as has reached me—used to say: “My two eyes sleep, but my heart is awake.” And Allāh knows best which of these came to him and what he witnessed therein of Allāh’s command, in whichever of his two states he was—asleep or awake. All of that is true and veracious.
