ʿAlī’s description of the Messenger of God ﷺ
Translation
✧ [ʿAlī's description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Hishām said: The description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was, according to what ʿUmar, the client of Ghufrah, mentioned from Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, who said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ﷺ, when he described the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: He was neither excessively tall and lanky, nor short and stubby. He was of medium stature among his people. He did not have tightly curled hair nor lank hair; his hair was wavy, neither curly nor straight. He was not fat-faced nor round-faced. He was fair with a reddish tinge, with very dark eyes, long eyelashes, prominent joints and shoulder-blades, a fine line of hair from the chest to the navel, and he was not hairy; his palms and feet were thick and rough. When he walked, he lifted his feet firmly, as though walking downhill. When he turned, he turned with his whole body. Between his shoulder-blades was the seal of prophethood, and he ﷺ is the seal of the prophets. He was the most generous of people in giving, the most courageous of people in heart, the most truthful of people in speech, the most faithful of people in fulfilling trusts, the gentlest of them in nature, and the most honorable of them in companionship. Whoever saw him unexpectedly was awed by him, and whoever associated with him loved him. His describer would say: I have never seen before him or after him anyone like him, ﷺ
