كُنَّا فِي سَفَرٍ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَجَارِيَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ لَهَا فَنَظَرَتْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَلْفَهَا، وَقَدْ تَضَايَقَ بِهِمُ الْجَبَلُ، فَقَالَتْ: حَلٍ حَلْ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ - يَعْنِي لِبَعِيرِهَا - فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: مَنْ صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْبَعِيرِ أَوِ الرَّاحِلَةِ فَلَا يَصْحَبُنَا بَعِيرٌ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ اللهِ لَعْنَةٌ ؟
✧ We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a slave girl of the Ansar was on a camel of hers. She looked behind her at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for the mountain had narrowed the way for them, and she said: 'Go on! Go on! May Allah's curse be upon you!' — meaning her camel. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Who is the owner of this camel, or this mount? Let no camel that carries Allah's curse accompany us.'

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا إِلَى حَيٍّ مِنْ أَحْيَاءِ الْعَرَبِ فَضَرَبُوهُ وَسَبُّوهُ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ: لَوْ أَهْلَ عُمَانَ أَتَيْتَ إِذًا مَا ضَرَبُوكَ وَلَا سَبُّوكَ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to a clan of the Arab clans, and they beat him and reviled him. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, so he said: “Had you gone to the people of Oman, they would not have beaten you nor reviled you.”

كُنْتُ أَتَمَنَّى أَنْ أَلْقَى رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْخَوَارِجِ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَرْزَةَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ فِي الْخَوَارِجِ ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِأُذُنِي وَرَأَيْتُهُ بِعَيْنِي قَالَ: أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَالٍ فَأَعْطَى مَنْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَمَنْ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ، وَلَمْ يُعْطِ مَنْ وَرَاءَهُ شَيْئًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، وَاللهِ مَا عَدَلْتَ فِيَّ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ الْقَسْمُ رَجُلٌ أَسْوَدُ مَطْمُومُ الشَّعَرِ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ أَبْيَضَانِ قَالَ: فَغَضِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ غَضَبًا شَدِيدًا، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ لَا تَجِدُونَ بَعْدِي رَجُلًا هُوَ أَعْدَلُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنِّي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " يَخْرُجُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ كَأَنَّ هَذَا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، سِيمَاهُمُ التَّحْلِيقُ لَا يَزَالُونَ يَخْرُجُونَ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ آخِرُهُمْ مَعَ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ، فَإِذَا لَقِيتُوهُمْ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ هُمْ شَرُّ الْخَلْقِ وَالْخَلِيقَةِ
✧ I had been wishing to meet a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ to ask him about the Kharijites. I met Abu Barzah on the day of Eid among a group of his companions, and I said to him: “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention anything about the Kharijites?” He said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with my own ears and saw him with my own eyes. A property was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave to those on his right and those on his left, but did not give anything to those behind him. A man stood up from behind him and said: ‘O Muhammad, by Allah you have not been just in dividing today.’ He was a black man with shaved hair, wearing two white garments. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became extremely angry and said: ‘By Allah, you will not find after me a man more just to you than me.’ Then he said: ‘In the latter days a people will emerge, as if this man is one of them. They recite the Qur’an but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through its target. Their sign is shaving. They will continue to emerge until the last of them emerges with the False Messiah. If you meet them, kill them, for they are the worst of creation and creatures.’”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَقِيَ الْعَدُوَّ فَأَفَاءَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: " هَلْ تَفْقِدُونَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ فِي الثَّانِي وَالثَّالِثِ ؟ " قَالُوا: لَا، فَقَالَ: " لَكِنِّي أَفْقِدُ جُلَيْبِيبًا انْطَلِقُوا فَالْتَمِسُوهُ فِي الْقَتْلَى " فَالْتَمَسُوهُ فَوَجَدُوهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ سَبْعَةٍ قَدْ قَتَلَهُمْ ثُمَّ قَتَلُوهُ فَأَتَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأُخْبِرَ فَجَاءَ حَتَّى قَامَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: هَذَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ، قَتَلَ سَبْعَةً ثُمَّ قَتَلُوهُ، هَذَا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ يَقُولُهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ حَمَلَهُ عَلَى سَاعِدَيْهِ مَا لَهُ سَرِيرٌ غَيْرُ سَاعِدَيِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى حُفِرَ لَهُ وَدُفِنَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ غُسْلًا
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met the enemy, and Allah granted him victory. He said: “Do you miss anyone from the second or third?” They said: “No.” He said: “But I miss Julaybib. Go and search for him among the slain.” So they searched and found him beside seven whom he had killed, and then they killed him. The Prophet ﷺ was informed and came and stood over him, and said: “This one is from me and I am from him. He killed seven, then they killed him. This one is from me and I am from him,” saying it twice. Then he carried him on his forearms, for he had no bier other than the forearms of the Prophet ﷺ, until a grave was dug for him and he was buried, and he did not mention any washing.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا جَلَسَ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَالَ: " سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّكَ تَقُولُ كَلَامًا مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُهُ فِيمَا خَلَا، فَقَالَ: " هَذَا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي الْمَجْلِسِ
✧ When the Prophet ﷺ sat in a gathering and wanted to get up, he would say: “Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, you say words that you did not use to say before.” He said: “This is an expiation for what occurs in the gathering.”

إِنَّ لِي حَوْضًا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْلَةَ وَصَنْعَاءَ عَرْضُهُ كَطُولِهِ يَثْعَبُ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ أَحَدُهُمَا مِنْ وَرِقٍ وَالْآخَرُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَهُوَ أَبْيَضُ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَأَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَأَبْرَدُ مِنَ الثَّلْجِ فِيهِ آنِيَةٌ عَدَدَ نُجُومِ السَّمَاءِ مَنْ شَرِبَ مِنْهُ شَرْبَةً لَمْ يَظْمَأْ حَتَّى يَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ ".
✧ Indeed, I will have a cistern between Aylah and Sana’a, its width equal to its length. Two spouts from Paradise pour into it, one of silver and the other of gold. It is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and cooler than snow. In it are vessels as numerous as the stars of the sky. Whoever drinks a drink from it will never thirst until he enters Paradise.”

✧ I said to Abu Barzah ؓ: “Whom did the Prophet ﷺ stone?” He said: “A man from among us called Ma’iz b. Malik.”

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَرْزَةَ وَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْحَوْضِ قَالَ: وَأَخْبِرْنِي مَنْ دَخَلَ مَعَهُ، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا رَآهُ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ: إِنَّ مُحَمَّدِيَّكُمْ هَذَا لَدَحْدَاحٌ قَالَ: فَلَمَّا سَمِعَهَا قَالَ: مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنْ أَعِيشَ حَتَّى أُعَيَّرَ بِصُحْبَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّكَ لَا تُعَيَّرُ بِذَاكَ، وَقَالَ " وَسَأَلَهُ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَوْضِ فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ لِي حَوْضًا " فَمَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهِ فَلَا أَوْرَدَهُ اللهُ
✧ I saw Abu Barzah when Ibn Ziyad sent for him to ask him about the Cistern. He said: “And tell me who entered with him.” When Ibn Ziyad saw him, he said: “This Muhammadan of yours is indeed short.” When he heard it, he said: “I never thought I would live to be reproached for the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” It was said to him: “You are not reproached for that.” And Ibn Ziyad asked him about the Cistern, so he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘I will have a cistern.’ Whoever denies it, may Allah not bring him to it.”

الْأُمَرَاءُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، وَلِي عَلَيْهِمْ حَقٌّ، وَلَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَقٌّ مَا فَعَلُوا بِثَلَاثٍ: مَا اسْتُرْحِمُوا فَرَحِمُوا، وَحَكَمُوا فَعَدَلُوا، وَعَقَدُوا فَوَفَوْا، فَمَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
✧ The rulers are from Quraysh. They have a right over you and you have a right over them as long as they do three things: when they are asked for mercy they show mercy, when they judge they are just, and when they make a covenant they fulfill it. Whoever among them does not do that, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَظَرَ إِلَى رَجُلَيْنِ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ يَتَمَثَّلَانِ بِهَذَا الشِّعْرِ فِي حَمْزَةَ: تَرَكْتُ حَوَارِيًّا تَلُوحُ عِظَامُهُ زَوَى الْحَرْبَ عَنْهُ أَنْ يُجَنَّ فَيُقْبَرَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُمَّ ارْكُسْهُمَا فِي الْفِتْنَةِ رَكْسًا وَادْعُهُمَا إِلَى الْعَذَابِ دَعًّا
✧ The Prophet ﷺ looked at two men on the day of Uhud reciting this poetry about Hamzah: 'I left a companion whose bones gleam, war kept him away from being buried.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Allah, cast them down into trial with a mighty cast, and drive them to punishment with a forceful drive.'

إِنَّ لِي حَوْضًا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْلَةَ وَصَنْعَاءَ عَرْضُهُ كَطُولِهِ يَثْعَبُ فِيهِ مِيزَابَانِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ أَحَدُهُمَا مِنْ وَرِقٍ وَالْآخَرُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ وَهُوَ أَبْيَضُ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَأَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ وَأَبْرَدُ مِنَ الثَّلْجِ فِيهِ آنِيَةٌ عَدَدَ نُجُومِ السَّمَاءِ مَنْ شَرِبَ مِنْهُ شَرْبَةً لَمْ يَظْمَأْ حَتَّى يَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ
✧ I have a cistern between Aylah and Sana'a, its width like its length. Into it pour two spouts from Paradise, one of silver and the other of gold. It is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and colder than snow. In it are vessels as many as the stars of the sky. Whoever drinks a drink from it will never thirst until he enters Paradise.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا إِلَى حَيٍّ مِنْ أَحْيَاءِ الْعَرَبِ فَسَبُّوهُ وَضَرَبُوهُ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَقَالَ: لَوْ أَهْلَ عُمَانَ أَتَيْتَ إِذًا مَا ضَرَبُوكَ وَلَا سَبُّوكَ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man to a tribe of the Arabs, and they insulted him and beat him. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, so he said: 'If you had gone to the people of Oman, they would not have beaten you or insulted you.'

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا جَلَسَ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ قَالَ: " سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّكَ لَتَقُولُ كَلَامًا مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُهُ فِيمَا خَلَا، فَقَالَ: " هَذَا كَفَّارَةُ مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ الْمَجْلِسِ
✧ When the Prophet ﷺ sat down and wanted to get up, he would say: 'Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you are saying words that you did not say before.' He said: 'This is an expiation for what occurs in a gathering.'

✧ Muhammad b. Ja'far narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu al-Minhal, from Abu Barzah, from the Prophet ﷺ similarly. And the hadith of Khalid al-Hadhdha' from al-Mughirah b. Abi Barzah from his father—I think Uthman b. Uthman erred in it. The correct version is Khalid al-Hadhdha' from Abu al-Minhal from Abu Barzah. Abu al-Minhal's name is Sayyar b. Salamah.

الْأُمَرَاءُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، وَلِي عَلَيْهِمْ حَقٌّ، وَلَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَقٌّ مَا فَعَلُوا بِثَلَاثٍ: مَا اسْتُرْحِمُوا فَرَحِمُوا، وَحَكَمُوا فَعَدَلُوا، وَعَقَدُوا فَوَفَوْا، فَمَنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ، وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ، وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ
✧ The rulers are from Quraysh. I have a right over them and they have a right over you as long as they do three things: when they are asked for mercy, they show mercy; when they judge, they are just; and when they make a covenant, they fulfill it. Whoever among them does not do that, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.

✧ Shu'bah narrated to us, from Ali b. Zayd, from al-Mughirah b. Abi Barzah, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ similarly. We do not know this hadith to be narrated from Abu Barzah except through this route, and we do not know anyone who narrated it from Ali b. Zayd except Shu'bah.

رَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَرْزَةَ وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْحَوْضِ قَالَ: فَأَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ، دَخَلَ مَعَهُ قَالَ: فَلَمَّا رَآهُ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ: إِنَّ مُحَمَّدِيَّكُمْ هَذَا لَدَحْدَاحٌ قَالَ: فَلَمَّا سَمِعَهَا أَبُو بَرْزَةَ قَالَ: مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنْ أَعِيشَ حَتَّى أُعَيَّرَ بِصُحْبَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: فَقِيلَ لَهُ: إِنَّكَ لَا تُعَيَّرُ بِذَلِكَ، قَالَ: وَسَأَلَهُ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَوْضِ، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: إِنَّ لِي حَوْضًا فَمَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهِ فَلَا أَوْرَدَهُ اللهُ
✧ I saw Abu Barzah when Ibn Ziyad sent for him to ask about the Hawd. He said: Then someone who entered with him informed me. He said: When Ibn Ziyad saw him, he said: 'This Muhammadan of yours is short and stout.' Abu Barzah heard that and said: 'I did not think I would live to be reproached for the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Someone said to him: 'You are not reproached for that.' Then Ibn Ziyad asked him about the Hawd, and he said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say—I think he said: "I have a Hawd. Whoever denies it, may Allah not let him drink from it."'

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَظَرَ إِلَى رَجُلَيْنِ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ يَتَمَثَّلَانِ بِهَذَا الشِّعْرِ فِي حَمْزَةَ: ( 2 / 248 ) تَرَكْتُ حَوَارِيًّا تَلُوحُ عِظَامُهُ زَوَى الْحَرْبَ عَنْهُ أَنْ يُجَنَّ فَيُقْبَرَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُمَّ ارْكُسْهُمَا رَكْسًا، وَادْعُهُمَا إِلَى الْعَذَابِ دَعًّا
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at two men on the day of Uhud reciting this poetry about Hamzah: 'I left a disciple whose bones glisten; war turned him away from going mad and being buried.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Allah, cast them down headlong, and drive them harshly to the punishment.'

غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ غَزْوَةَ كَذَا وَغَزْوَةَ كَذَا حَتَّى عَدَّ ثَمَانِيَ غَزَوَاتٍ فَمَا رَأَيْنَا مِنْهُ إِلَّا التَّيْسِيرَ وَالتَّخْفِيفَ
✧ I campaigned with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in such-and-such a campaign and such-and-such a campaign until he counted eight campaigns, and we saw from him nothing but facilitation and lightening.
