✧ A guest stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he sent me to get food for him. I went to a Jewish man and said, 'Muhammad ﷺ says to you: A guest has stayed with us and we do not have some of what would suit him, so sell to me or lend to me until the new moon of Rajab.' The Jew said, 'No, by Allah, I will not lend to him nor sell to him except with a pledge.' I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him. He said, 'By Allah, I am indeed trustworthy in the eyes of the people of heaven, trustworthy in the eyes of the people of earth. If he had lent to me or sold to me, I would have paid him. Go with my breastplate.' Then this verse was revealed to console him regarding the world: Do not extend your eyes toward what We have bestowed upon some pairs of them.

✧ I was in charge of al-Abbas's wealth. Islam had entered us, the people of the household, and I embraced Islam, al-Abbas embraced Islam, and Umm al-Fadl embraced Islam. Al-Abbas feared his people and disliked opposing them, and he concealed his Islam. He had abundant wealth dispersed among his people. Abu Lahab had stayed behind and sent in his place al-Asi b. Hashim b. al-Mughirah, and that is what they used to do: no man stayed behind except that he sent a man in his place. When news came of the defeat of Quraysh at Badr, we found within ourselves strength and honor. I was a weak man and I used to make wooden bowls, carving them in the chamber of Zamzam. By Allah, I was sitting there carving my bowls with Umm al-Fadl sitting beside me, and what had come to us had pleased us, when Abu Lahab came and sat at the rope of the chamber and leaned his back against my back. Then people said, 'Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib has arrived.' The people were standing around him, and he said, 'O son of my brother...'
