" كُنْتُ فِي الْقَوْمِ حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الرُّخْصَةُ فِي الْمَسْحِ بِالتُّرَابِ إِذَا لَمْ نَجِدِ الْمَاءَ، فَأَمَرَنَا فَضَرَبْنَا وَاحِدَةً لِلْوَجْهِ، ثُمَّ ضَرَبْنَا أُخْرَى لِلْيَدَيْنِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ
✧ I was among the people when the concession was revealed regarding wiping with dust when we could not find water. He ordered us, so we struck once for the face, then we struck another time for the hands up to the elbows.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى عُمَرَ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ، وَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَجْنَبْتُ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ مَاءً، فَقَالَ: عُمَرُ: لَا تُصَلِّ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: أَمَا تَذْكُرُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَأَجْنَبْنَا فَلَمْ نَجِدْ مَاءً، فَأَمَّا أَنْتَ فَلَمْ تُصَلِّ، وَأَمَّا أَنَا فَتَمَعَّكْتُ فِي التُّرَابِ وَصَلَّيْتُ، فَلَمَّا أَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ ذَكَرْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ "، وَضَرَبَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِيَدِهِ الْأَرْضَ ثُمَّ نَفَخَ، وَمَسَحَ بِهَا وَجْهَهُ وَكَفَّيْهِ
✧ A man came to 'Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, and said, "I became junub and could not find water." 'Umar said, "Do not pray." 'Ammar said, "Do you not remember, O Commander of the Faithful, when you and I were on a military expedition and became junub and could not find water? As for you, you did not pray, but as for me, I rolled in the dust and prayed. When we came to the Prophet ﷺ, I mentioned that to him, and he said, 'It would have been enough for you to do this,' and the Prophet ﷺ struck the ground with his hand, then blew on it, and wiped his face and palms with it."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَسَأَلَهُ، عَنِ الْجُنُبِ لَا يَجِدُ الْمَاءَ قَالَ: لَا يُصَلِّ حَتَّى يَجِدَ الْمَاءَ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: أَمَا تَذْكُرُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حِينَ بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنَا وَأَنْتَ إِلَى مَكَانِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَأَجْنَبْتُ فَتَمَعَّكْتُ فِي الصَّعِيدِ، فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ كَذَا وَكَذَا "، فَوَضَعَ يَدَيْهِ فِي الصَّعِيدِ فَمَسَحَ بِهِمَا يَدَيْهِ وَوَجْهَهُ
✧ A man came to 'Umar and asked him about a junub person who cannot find water. He said, "He should not pray until he finds water." 'Ammar said, "Do you not remember, O Commander of the Faithful, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent you and me to such-and-such a place, and I became junub and rolled in the dust? I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'It would have been enough for you to do this and this.' Then he placed his hands on the ground and wiped his hands and face with them."

صَلَّى عَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ صَلَاةً خَفَّفَهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ: لَقَدْ خَفَّفْتَهَا قَالَ: أَلَمْ أُتِمَّ الرُّكُوعَ وَالسُّجُودَ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى قَالَ: أَمَا إِنِّي قَدْ دَعَوْتُ، يَعْنِي فِيهَا، بِدَعَوَاتٍ أَوْ بِدُعَاءٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُمَّ بِعِلْمِكَ الْغَيْبَ وَقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَى خَلْقِكَ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَأَسْأَلُكَ خَشْيَتَكَ فِي الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ كَلِمَةَ الْحَقِّ فِي الْغَضَبِ وَالرِّضَا، وَأَسْأَلُكَ الْقَصْدَ فِي الْفَقْرِ وَالْغِنَى، وَأَسْأَلُكَ نَعِيمًا لَا يَبِيدُ، وَقُرَّةَ عَيْنٍ لَا تَنْقَطِعُ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ الرِّضَا بَعْدَ الْقَضَا، وَأَسْأَلُكَ بَرْدَ الْعَيْشِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ النَّظَرَ فِي وَجْهِكَ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ الشَّوْقَ إِلَى لِقَائِكَ فِي غَيْرِ ضَرَّاءَ مُضِرَّةٍ، وَلَا فِتْنَةٍ مُضِلَّةٍ
✧ ‘Ammār b. Yāsir prayed a prayer and made it light, so a man said to him: “You have made it light.” He said: “Did I not complete the bowing and the prostration?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Indeed I supplicated, meaning during it, with supplications—or a supplication—that I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ: O God, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over Your creation, keep me alive as long as life is good for me, and cause me to die when death is good for me. I ask You for fear of You in the unseen and the witnessed, and I ask You for the word of truth in anger and contentment, and I ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth, and I ask You for bliss that never perishes and coolness of eyes that never ceases, and I ask You for contentment after the decree, and I ask You for a pleasant life after death, and I ask You for the look at Your face, and I ask You for yearning to meet You without harmful adversity or misleading trial.”

✧ ‘Ammār prayed one day with his companions a prayer and was brief in it, so it was said to him: “O Abū al-Yaqẓān, you have made it light.” He said: “Indeed, despite that I supplicated with supplications I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he stood, I followed him—or a man stood and followed him—and asked him, then came and informed the people.” He said: “O God, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over Your creation, keep me alive as long as life is good for me, and cause me to die when death is good for me. كُنَّا عِنْدَ عَمَّارٍ، يَعْنِي فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي يُشَكُّ فِيهِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَأَتَى بِشَاةٍ مَصْلِيَّةٍ، فَقَالَ: كُلُوا، فَتَنَحَّى بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ، وَقَالَ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ، فَقَالَ عَمَّارٌ: مَنْ صَامَ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي يُشَكُّ فِيهِ فَقَدْ عَصَى أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ
✧ We were with ‘Ammār, meaning on the day about which there is doubt concerning Ramaḍān, and a roasted sheep was brought. He said: “Eat.” Some of the people withdrew and one said: “I am fasting.” So ‘Ammār said: “Whoever fasts the day about which there is doubt has disobeyed Abū al-Qāsim.”

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came upon me while I was at a well drawing water into my waterskin, and he said: “What are you doing?” I said: “O Messenger of God, I am washing my garment from janābah that affected it.” He said: “O ‘Ammār, a garment is only washed from feces, urine, vomit, and blood.”

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ divorced Ḥafṣah, Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said: “Take Ḥafṣah back, for she fasts much and prays much, and she is your wife in Paradise.”

قَدِمْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي لَيْلًا مِنْ سَفَرٍ وَقَدْ تَشَقَّقَتْ يَدَايَ، فَخَلَّقُونِي بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ، فَغَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ، وَلَمْ يُرَحِّبْ بِي، وَقَالَ: " اغْسِلْ هَذَا عَنْكَ "، فَذَهَبْتُ فَغَسَلْتُهُ، ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَرَحَّبَ بِي، وَقَالَ: إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَا تَحْضُرُ جِنَازَةَ الْكَافِرِ، وَلَا الْمُتَضَمِّخِ بِالزَّعْفَرَانِ
✧ I came to my family at night from a journey, and my hands had become cracked, so they perfumed me with saffron. Then I went in the morning to the Messenger of God ﷺ and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting or welcome me. He said: “Wash this off yourself.” So I went and washed it, then returned to him and greeted him, and he welcomed me. He said: “The angels do not attend the funeral of a disbeliever, nor of one smeared with saffron.”

صَعِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمِنْبَرَ، فَقَالَ: " آمِينَ آمِينَ آمِينَ "، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ قِيلَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: أَتَانِي جِبْرِيلُ، فَقَالَ: رَغِمَ أَنْفُ رَجُلٍ أَدْرَكَ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمْ يُغْفَرْ لَهُ أَوْ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللهُ، قُلْ: آمِينَ، فَقُلْتُ: آمِينَ، وَرَغِمَ أَنْفُ رَجُلٍ أَدْرَكَ وَالِدَيْهِ فَلَمْ يُدْخِلَاهُ الْجَنَّةَ أَوْ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللهُ، قُلْ: آمِينَ، قُلْتُ: آمِينَ، وَرَجُلٌ ذُكِرْتَ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيْكَ فَأَبْعَدَهُ اللهُ، قُلْ: آمِينَ، فَقُلْتُ: آمِينَ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and said: "Amin, Amin, Amin." When he descended, he was asked about it, and he said: "Jibril came to me and said: 'May the nose of a man be rubbed in dust who reaches Ramadan and is not forgiven—or may Allah distance him. Say: Amin.' So I said: 'Amin.' And may the nose of a man be rubbed in dust who reaches his parents and they do not admit him to Paradise—or may Allah distance him. Say: Amin.' So I said: 'Amin.' And a man in whose presence you are mentioned, yet he does not send blessings upon you—may Allah distance him. Say: Amin.' So I said: 'Amin.'"

✧ 'Ammar b. Yasir delivered a sermon to us, and he was eloquent and concise. We said: 'O Abu al-Yaqzan, you have been eloquent and concise.' He said: 'Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Verily, the length of the prayer and the brevity of the sermon are a sign of a man's understanding. So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermons."'

" مَثَلُ أُمَّتِي مَثَلُ الْمَطَرِ لَا يُدْرَى أَوَّلُهُ خَيْرٌ أَمْ آخِرُهُ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not eat from a gift until its giver was put at ease or he ate from it, on account of the sheep that was gifted to him at Khaybar.

أَنَّ عَمَّارَ بْنَ يَاسِرٍ كَانَ إِذَا سَمِعَ مَا يَتَحَدَّثُ بِهِ النَّاسُ عَنْ تَزْوِيجِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ خَدِيجَةَ، يَقُولُ عَمَّارٌ: أَنَا مِنْ أَعْلَمِ النَّاسِ بِتَزْوِيجِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِيَّاهَا، كُنْتُ مِنْ إِخْوَانِهِ فَكُنْتُ لَهُ خِدْنًا، وَإِلْفًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، وَإِنِّي خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ حَتَّى مَرَرْنَا عَلَى أُخْتِ خَدِيجَةَ، وَهِيَ جَالِسَةٌ عَلَى أَدَمٍ لَهَا، فَنَادَتْنِي فَانْصَرَفْتُ إِلَيْهَا، وَوَقَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَتْ: أَمَا لِصَاحِبِكَ فِي تَزْوِيجِ خَدِيجَةَ حَاجَةٌ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: بَلَى، لَعَمْرِي، فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهَا، فَأَخْبَرْتُهَا بِمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَتِ: اغْدُ إِلَيْنَا إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ غَدًا، فَغَدَوْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ، فَوَجَدْنَاهُمْ قَدْ ذَبَحُوا بَقَرَةً، وَأَلْبَسُوا أَبَا خَدِيجَةَ حُلَّةً، وَضَرَبُوا عَلَيْهِ قُبَّةً، فَكَلَّمْتُ أَخَاهَا، فَكَلَّمَ أَبَاهُ، فَأُخْبِرَ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَكَانِهِ، وَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُزَوِّجَهُ، فَزَوَّجَهُ، فَصَنَعُوا مِنَ الْبَقَرَةِ طَعَامًا فَأَكَلْنَا مِنْهُ، وَنَامَ أَبُوهَا ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةُ، وَهَذِهِ الْقُبَّةُ، وَهَذَا الطَّعَامُ ؟ قَالَتْ لَهُ ابْنَتُهُ الَّتِي كَلَّمَتْ عَمَّارًا: هَذِهِ الْحُلَّةُ كَسَاكَهَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ خَتَنُكَ، وَبَقَرَةً أَهْدَاهَا إِلَيْكَ فَذَبَحْنَاهَا حِينَ زَوَّجْتَهُ خَدِيجَةَ، فَأَنْكَرَ أَنْ يَكُونَ زَوَّجَهُ، وَخَرَجَ حَتَّى جَاءَ الْحِجْرَ، وَخَرَجَتْ بَنُو هَاشِمٍ حَتَّى جَاءُوا، فَقَالَ: أَيْنَ صَاحِبُكُمُ الَّذِي تَزْعُمُونَ أَنِّي زَوَّجْتُهُ خَدِيجَةَ ؟ فَلَمَّا رَأَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ قَالَ: إِنْ كُنْتُ زَوَّجْتُهُ وَإِلَّا فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُهُ.
✧ That 'Ammar b. Yasir, when he heard what people were saying about the marriage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Khadijah, would say: 'Ammar said: I am one of the people most knowledgeable about the marriage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to her. I was one of his close friends, and I was a companion and intimate to him in the pre-Islamic era. One day I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we passed by Khadijah's sister while she was sitting on her leather mat. She called me, so I went to her while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped. She said: Does your companion have any need to marry Khadijah? I informed him, and he said: Yes, by my life. I returned to her and told her what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. She said: Come to us tomorrow morning. So we went to them in the morning, and we found that they had slaughtered a cow, dressed Khadijah's father in a fine garment, and set up a dome over him. I spoke to her brother, who spoke to her father, and he was told about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his location, and was asked to marry her to him. So he married her to him. They prepared food from the cow, and we ate from it. Her father slept, then woke up and said: What is this fine garment, this dome, and this food? The daughter who had spoken to 'Ammar said to him: This fine garment was given to you by Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah, your son-in-law, and he gifted you a cow which we slaughtered when you married him to Khadijah. He denied having married her and went out until he came to al-Hijr, and Banu Hashim went out until they came. He said: Where is your companion whom you claim I married to Khadijah? When he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and looked at him, he said: If I married her to him, then it is so; if not, then I have now married her to him.

" نَزَلَتِ الْمَائِدَةُ خُبْزًا، وَلَحْمًا، وَأُمِرُوا أَنْ لَا يَخُونُوا، وَلَا يَدَّخِرُوا، وَلَا يُخَبُّوا لِغَدٍ، فَخَانُوا، وَادَّخَرُوا، وَخَبَّوْا لِغَدٍ، فَرُفِعَتْ
✧ The table spread came down as bread and meat, and they were commanded not to betray, not to store up, and not to hide anything for the next day. But they betrayed, stored up, and hid for the next day, so it was taken up.

أَنَّ عَمَّارًا صَلَّى صَلَاةً رَكْعَتَيْنِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ: لَقَدْ خَفَّفْتَهُمَا قَالَ: هَلْ رَأَيْتَنِي نَقَصْتُ مِنْ رُكُوعِهَا، أَوْ حُدُودِهَا شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: لَا وَلَكِنَّكَ خَفَّفْتَهُمَا قَالَ: إِنِّي بَادَرْتُ بِهَا الْوَسْوَاسَ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُصَلِّي صَلَاةَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ، وَلَعَلَّهُ أَلَّا تَكُونَ لَهُ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ إِلَّا عُشْرُهَا، وَتُسْعُهَا ثُمُنُهَا سُبُعُهَا سُدُسُهَا خُمُسُهَا، حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى آخِرِ الْعَدَدِ
✧ That 'Ammar prayed two rak'ahs, and 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith said to him: You made them very light. He said: Did you see me reduce anything from its bowing or its limits? He said: No, but you made them light. He said: I hastened with them to avoid distraction. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: A man may pray the obligatory prayer, and perhaps he has only a tenth of his prayer, or a ninth, an eighth, a seventh, a sixth, a fifth, until he reaches the end of the count.

✧ Ibn 'Ajlan narrated to us, from Sa'id al-Maqburi, from 'Umar b. al-Hakam, from 'Abd Allah b. 'Anama, from 'Ammar, from the Prophet ﷺ with something similar. And Ibn Ishaq said in it, from Muhammad b. Ibrahim, from 'Umar b. al-Hakam, from 'Ammar.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: إِنَّ أَشْقَى الْأَوَّلِينَ عَاقِرُ النَّاقَةِ، وَإِنَّ أَشْقَى الْآخِرِينَ لَمَنْ يَضْرِبُكَ ضَرْبَةً عَلَى هَذِهِ "، وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى رَأْسِهِ، " يُخَضِّبُ هَذِهِ "، وَأَوْمَأَ إِلَى لِحْيَتِهِ.
✧ That the Prophet ﷺ said to 'Ali: The most wretched of the former peoples was the one who hamstrung the she-camel, and the most wretched of the latter peoples is the one who strikes you a blow on this - and he pointed to his head - dyeing this - and he pointed to his beard.

✧ Allah has appointed over my grave an angel whom He has given the hearing of all creatures. No one sends blessings upon me until the Day of Resurrection except that he informs me of his name and his father's name: 'So-and-so, son of so-and-so, has sent blessings upon you.'

✧ I saw 'Ammar on the Day of the Camel, and with him was a horn which he had attached with urine in it. I said: 'I would like to fight alongside you.' He said: 'Fight under the banner of your people, for the Messenger of God ﷺ used to like a man to fight under the banner of his people.'

بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى حَيٍّ مِنْ قَيْسٍ، أُعَلِّمُهُمْ شَرَائِعَ الْإِسْلَامِ قَالَ: فَإِذَا قَوْمٌ كَأَنَّهُمُ الْإِبِلُ الْوَحْشِيَّةُ طَامِحَةٌ أَبْصَارُهُمْ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ هَمٌّ إِلَّا شَاةٌ أَوْ بَعِيرٌ، فَانْصَرَفْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: " يَا عَمَّارُ مَا عَمِلْتَ ؟ "، فَقَصَصْتُ عَلَيْهِ قِصَّةَ الْقَوْمِ، وَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا بِهِمْ مِنَ السَّهْوَةِ قَالَ: يَا عَمَّارُ أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِأَعْجَبَ مِنْهُمْ، قَوْمٌ عَلِمُوا مَا جَهِلَ أُولَئِكَ، ثُمَّ سَهَوْا كَسَهْوِهِمْ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me to a tribe of Qays to teach them the laws of Islam. He said: 'And there was a people as if they were wild camels, their gazes wandering, having no concern except a sheep or a camel. So I returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: "O 'Ammar, what did you do?" I related to him the story of the people and told him of their heedlessness. He said: "O 'Ammar, shall I not tell you of something more astonishing than them? A people who knew what those others were ignorant of, then became heedless like their heedlessness."
