  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1Sahih

The owner of this house – and he pointed at the house of Abdullah b. Masud – said, "I asked the Prophet ﷺ which action Allah loves best. He replied, "(1) Prayer at its proper time." "Then what," I asked. He said, "(2) Then kindness to parents." I asked, "Then what?" He replied, "(3) Then jihad in the Way of Allah." He added, "He told me about these things. If I had asked him to tell me more, he would have told me more."

  2. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 2Hasan

The pleasure of the Lord lies in the pleasure of the parent. The anger of the Lord lies in the anger of the parent.

  3. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 3Hasan

I said, “O Messenger of Allah, whom should I treat with the greatest kindness?” He said, “Your mother.” I said, “Whom should I treat with the greatest kindness ˹next˺?” He said, “Your mother.” I said, “Whom should I treat with the greatest kindness ˹next˺?” He said, “Your mother.” I said, “Whom should I treat with the greatest kindness ˹next˺?” He said, “Your father, then the nearest ˹in kinship˺, then the nearest.”

  4. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 4Sahih

a man came to him and said: “I proposed marriage to a woman, but she refused to marry me. Someone else proposed to her and she wanted to marry him. I became jealous of her and killed her. Do I have any repentance?” He said: “Is your mother alive?” He said: “No.” He said: “Repent to Allah ﷻ and draw near to Him as much as you are able.” He said: “So I went and asked Ibn ʿAbbās: ‘Why did you ask him about whether his mother was alive?’ He said: ‘I do not know of any deed closer to Allah ﷻ than dutifulness to one’s mother.’”

  5. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 5Sahih

The Prophet was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, to whom should I be dutiful?" "Your mother," he replied. He was asked, "Then whom?" "Your mother," he replied. He was asked, "Then whom?" "Your mother," he replied. He was asked, "Then whom?" He replied, "Your father."

  6. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 6Sahih

A man came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, “What do you command me to do?” He replied, “Be dutiful to your mother.” Then he asked again and he replied, “Be dutiful to your mother.” Then he asked again and he replied, “Be dutiful to your mother.” Then he asked again the fourth time and he replied, “Be dutiful to your father.”

  7. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 7Weak

he said: There is no Muslim who has two Muslim parents and begins the day with them seeking reward ˹from Allah˺ except that Allah opens for him two gates —meaning, of Paradise— and if there is only one ˹parent˺, then ˹this is true for the˺ one. If he angers one of them, Allah will not be pleased with him until that parent is pleased with him. It was said: Even if they wrong him? He said: Even if they wrong him.

  8. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 8Sahih

I was with the Najdāt (a group from the sect of Khawārij) and I committed sins that I see as nothing but among the major sins. I mentioned that to Ibn ʿUmar, and he said, “What are they?” I said such-and-such. He said, “These are not among the major sins. They are nine: (1) associating partners with Allah, (2) killing a soul, (3) fleeing from the battlefield, (4) falsely accusing a chaste woman, (5) consuming usury, (6) consuming the wealth of an orphan, (7) committing sacrilege in the Sacred Mosque, (8) the one who mocks, and (9) making one’s parents weep because of disobedience.” Ibn ʿUmar said to me, “Do you dread the Fire and love to enter Paradise?” I said, “Yes, by Allah.” He said, “Is your father alive?” I said, “I have my mother.” He said, “By Allah, if you speak gently to her and feed her, you will surely enter Paradise, so long as you avoid the major sins.”

  9. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 9Sahih

He said: “And lower for them the wing of humility out of mercy.” ([Isra 17:24](/quran:17:24)) He said: Do not withhold from them anything they love.

  10. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 10Sahih

from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "A child cannot repay his parent unless he finds them as a slave and then buys them and ˹thereby˺ sets them free."

  11. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 11Sahih

He witnessed Ibn Umar and a Yemeni man doing the Tawaf of the House (the Kābah). The man was carrying his mother on his back and saying, "I am her humble camel. If her ride is frightened, I will not be frightened." Then he said, "O Ibn Umar, do you think I have repaid her?" Ibn Umar replied, "No, not even for a single groan ˹of labor pain˺ of hers." Ibn Umar then continued the Tawaf and came to the Maqam ˹Ibrahim˺, where he prayed two units of prayer. Then he said, "O son of Abu Musa, indeed, every two units of prayer expiate what comes ahead of them."

  12. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 12Weak

Marwan ˹b. al-Hakam˺ used to appoint Abu Hurayrah as his deputy, and he would be at Dhu al-Hulayfah. His mother would be in one house and he in another. He said: When he wanted to go out, he would stand at her door and say, “Peace be upon you, my mother, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.” She would say, “And upon you be peace, my son, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.” Then he would say, “May Allah have mercy on you as you raised me when I was small.” And she would say, “May Allah have mercy on you as you have been dutiful to me when I am old.” Then when he wanted to enter, he would do the same.

  13. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 13Sahih

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him for emigration, and he had left his parents weeping. He said: "Go back to them and make them laugh as you made them weep."

  14. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14Hasan

✧ That he rode with Abu Hurayrah to his land in al-Aqiq. When he entered his land, he called out at the top of his voice: Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings, my dear mother. She would say: And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. He would say: May Allah have mercy on you; you raised me when I was small. She would say: My dear son, and you—may Allah reward you with good, and may He be pleased with you, as you were dutiful to me when I was old.

  15. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 15Sahih

Abu Bakra reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I tell you which is the worst of the major wrong actions?" "Yes, Messenger of Allah," they replied. He said, "Associating something else with Allah and disobeying parents." He had been reclining but then he sat up and said, "and, unquestionably, false witness." ˹Abu Bakrah said,˺ "He continued to repeat it until I said, 'Is he going to stop?'"

  16. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 16Sahih

Muawiyah wrote to al-Mughirah, asking him to write back with what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Warrad said: So he dictated to me, and I wrote with my own hand: I heard him forbid excessive questioning, wasting wealth, and idle talk.

  17. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 17Sahih

Ali was asked, “Did the Prophet ﷺ give you something exclusively that he did not give to all the people?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not give us anything exclusively that he did not give to the people, except what is in the sheath of my sword.” He then brought out a document, on which was written: “Allah curses whoever sacrifices to other than Allah; Allah curses whoever steals a boundary marker of the land; Allah curses whoever curses his parents; and Allah curses whoever shelters an offender.”

  18. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 18Hasan

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed me in nine things: “(1) Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are cut to pieces or burned. (2) Never deliberately abandon the prescribed prayer, for whoever deliberately abandons it is no longer under the covenant of protection. (3) Never drink wine, for it is the key to every evil. (4) Obey your parents; if they command you to relinquish your worldly possessions, relinquish them for their sake. (5) Do not contend with those in authority, even if you believe that you are in the right. (6) Do not flee from the advancing army, even if you perish and your companions flee. (7) Spend on your family according to your means. (8) Do not withhold your rod from your family, and (9) make them fear Allah ﷻ.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “May his nose be rubbed in dust! May his nose be rubbed in dust! May his nose be rubbed in dust!” They asked, “Who, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “Whoever lives to see both of his parents—or one of them—in old age, yet enters Hellfire.”

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever is dutiful to his parents—blessed is he! May Allah ﷻ increase his lifespan."

  23. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 23Hasan

Regarding the saying ˹of Allah˺ ﷻ, “If one or both of them reach old age in your care, do not say to them, ‘Uff’” ([Isra 17:23](https://quran.islamunlocked.com/quran:17:23)), through His saying, “as they raised me when I was small” ([Isra 17:24](https://quran.islamunlocked.com/quran:17:24): The verse in Baraah abrogated it: “Neither the Prophet nor those who believe may seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire” ([Tawbah 9:113](https://quran.islamunlocked.com/quran:9:113)).

  24. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 24Sahih

Four ayat from the Book of Allah ﷻ were revealed concerning me: (1) My mother had sworn that she would neither eat nor drink until I parted from Muhammad ﷺ, so Allah ﷻ revealed: "If they strive against you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but keep their company in this world with kindness." (2) The second was that I had taken a sword that pleased me, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, grant this to me," and then was revealed: "They ask you about the spoils of war." (3) The third was that I became ill, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I want to divide up my wealth; should I make a bequest of half?" He said: "No." I said, "A third?" He remained silent, and thereafter a third became permissible. (4) The fourth was that I drank wine with a group from the Ansar, and one of them struck my nose with a camel's jawbone. I came to the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah ﷻ revealed the prohibition of wine.

He replied, 'Only a person who has no portion in the Next World could wear this.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was given some robes made of the same material. He sent one of the robes to 'Umar. 'Umar exclaimed, 'How can I wear it when you said what you said about it?' The Prophet replied, 'I did not give it to you so that you could wear it. You can sell it or give it to someone.' 'Umar sent it to a brother of his in Makka who had not yet become Muslim."

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No newborn has spoken in the cradle except Jesus, the son of Mary ﷺ, and the companion of Jurayj." It was asked, "O Prophet of Allah, and who is the companion of Jurayj?" He said, "Jurayj was a monk who used to worship in his hermitage. A cattle shepherd would take refuge under his hermitage, and there was a woman from the village who frequently visited the shepherd. One day, Jurayj's mother came and called out, 'O Jurayj!' while he was praying. He thought to himself as he was praying: 'My mother or my prayer?' He decided to prefer his prayer. She called out to him a second time, and he thought to himself: 'My mother or my prayer?' He decided to prefer his prayer. She called out to him a third time, and he again thought: 'My mother or my prayer?' and he decided to prefer his prayer. When he did not respond to her, she said, 'May Allah not let you die, Jurayj, until you have looked in the faces of the wicked women.' Then she left. Later, the king was presented with that woman who had given birth. He asked, 'Whose child is this?' She said, 'Jurayj’s.' The king asked, 'The companion of the hermitage?' She replied, 'Yes.' He said, 'Destroy his hermitage and bring him to me!' So they destroyed his hermitage with axes until it collapsed. They tied his hands to his neck with a rope and brought him. He was taken past the wicked women, and he saw them and smiled while they were looking at him among the people. The king asked him, 'What does she claim?' Jurayj asked, 'What does she claim?' The king answered, 'She claims that her child is yours.' Jurayj asked her, 'Do you claim this?' She replied, 'Yes.' He asked, 'Where is the child?' They said, 'He is in her arms.' Jurayj turned to him and asked, 'Who is your father?' The baby responded, 'The cattle shepherd.' The king then asked, 'Shall we make your hermitage out of gold?' Jurayj replied, 'No.' The king asked, 'Out of silver?' Jurayj replied, 'No.' The king asked, 'Then what shall we make it from?' Jurayj replied, 'Return it as it was.' The king asked, 'Why did you smile?' Jurayj said, 'Something I understood: my mother's supplication reached me,' and then he explained to them."
