✧ Your uncle Abu Talib used to protect you and do for you. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He is in a shallow part of the Fire, and were it not for me he would have been in the lowest depth.

✧ O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I may ask of my Lord. He said: Ask your Lord for well-being. Then he waited as long as Allah willed, then said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I may ask of my Lord. He said: Ask your Lord for well-being in this world and the Hereafter.

يَظْهَرُ الدِّينُ، حَتَّى يُجَاوِزَ الْبِحَارَ، وَتُخَاضُ الْبِحَارُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، ثُمَّ يَأْتِي مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ أَقْوَامٌ يَقْرَؤُونَ الْقُرْآنَ، يَقُولُونَ: قَدْ قَرَأْنَا الْقُرْآنَ، مَنْ أَقْرَأُ مِنَّا ؟ وَمَنْ أَفْقَهُ مِنَّا ؟ أَوْ مَنْ أَعْلَمُ مِنَّا ؟ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ فِي أُولَئِكَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ ؟ قَالُوا: لَا، قَالَ: أُولَئِكَ مِنْكُمْ، مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ، وَأُولَئِكَ هُمْ وَقُودُ النَّارِ
✧ The religion will prevail until it crosses the seas, and the seas will be crossed in the path of Allah. Then after you will come peoples who recite the Quran, saying: We have recited the Quran; who among us recites better? Who among us has more understanding? Or who among us has more knowledge? Then he turned to his companions and said: Is there any good in those? They said: No. He said: Those are from you, from this nation, and those are the fuel of the Fire.

كُنْتُ أَقُودُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فِي زُقَاقِ أَبِي لَهَبٍ فَقَالَ: يَا كُرَيْبُ بَلَغْنَا مَكَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا ؟ قَالَ: أَنْتَ عِنْدَهُ الْآنَ، فَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ: بَيْنَا أَنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ إِذْ أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ يَتَبَخْتَرُ بَيْنَ بُرْدَيْهِ وَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى عِطْفَيْهِ قَدْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ إِذْ خَسَفَ اللهُ بِهِ الْأَرْضَ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْطِنِ، فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ I was leading Ibn Abbas in the alley of Abu Lahab, and he said: O Kurayb, have we reached such-and-such a place? He said: You are at it now. He said: Al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib narrated to me, saying: While I was with the Prophet ﷺ in this spot, a man came swaggering between his two cloaks, looking at his sides, pleased with himself, when Allah caused the earth to swallow him in this place, and he is sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection.

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ، فَهَاجَتِ الرِّيحُ، فَوَقَعَ مَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ وَرَقٍ نَخِرٍ، وَبَقِيَ فِيهَا مَا كَانَ مِنْ وَرَقٍ أَخْضَرَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا مَثَلُ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ ؟ قَالَ الْقَوْمُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: مَثَلُهَا مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ، إِذَا اقْشَعَرَّ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللهِ، وَقَعَتْ عَنْهُ ذُنُوبُهُ وَبَقِيَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَاتُهُ
✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ under a tree. The wind blew, and the decayed leaves in it fell, while the green leaves remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What is the likeness of this tree? The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: Its likeness is the likeness of the believer: when he shivers from fear of Allah, his sins fall from him and his good deeds remain.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَعِنْدَهُ نِسَاؤُهُ فَاسْتَتَرْنَ مِنِّي إِلَّا مَيْمُونَةَ، فَدُقَّ لَهُ سَعْطَةٌ فَلُدَّ، فَقَالَ: لَا يَبْقَيَنَّ فِي الْبَيْتِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا لُدَّ إِلَّا الْعَبَّاسَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ يَمِينِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ، فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ لِحَفْصَةَ: قُولِي لَهُ إِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِذَا قَامَ ذَلِكَ الْمَقَامَ بَكَى، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ، فَقَالَ: مُرُوا أَبَا بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ، فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ثُمَّ وَجَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خِفَّةً، فَخَرَجَ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ تَأَخَّرَ، فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ بِيَدِهِ أَيْ مَكَانَكَ، فَجَاءَ، فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ، فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْ حَيْثُ انْتَهَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ
✧ I entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ while his wives were with him, and they veiled themselves from me except Maymunah. A snuff was pounded for him and he was given it orally. He said: 'No one in the house shall remain without being given it orally except al-Abbas, for my right hand did not reach him.' Then he said: 'Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' Aishah said to Hafsah: 'Tell him that when Abu Bakr stands in that place he weeps.' She told him, and he said: 'Command Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' Abu Bakr led the prayer. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ felt some relief and came out. When Abu Bakr saw him he stepped back, but he gestured to him with his hand, meaning 'stay where you are.' He came and sat beside him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ recited from where Abu Bakr had ended.

أَصَابَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ مَأْمُومَةٌ، فَأَرَادَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ أَنْ يُقِيدَ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَبَّاسُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا قَوَدَ فِي مَأْمُومَةٍ وَلَا جَائِفَةٍ وَلَا مُنَقِّلَةٍ، فَأَغْرَمَهُ الْعَقْلَ
✧ A man from Banu Kinanah suffered a head wound reaching the brain membrane, and Umar b. al-Khattab wanted to exact retaliation from the one who struck him. Al-Abbas said to him: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "No retaliation for a wound reaching the brain membrane, nor for a penetrating wound to the body cavity, nor for a wound that dislodges a bone." So he made him pay blood money.

✧ I heard Abu Hurayrah say to Ibn Abbas: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The believer's dream is one of forty parts of prophethood." Ibn Abbas said: 'Of sixty.' Abu Hurayrah said: 'You hear me say: "The Messenger of God ﷺ said," and you say: "Of sixty"?'

شَهِدْتُ حُنَيْنًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا هُزِمَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ، وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ، أَهْدَاهَا لَهُ فَرْوَةُ بْنُ نُفَاثَةَ الْجُذَامِيُّ، فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَرْكُضُهَا فِي وُجُوهِ الْكُفَّارِ، وَأَنَا آخِذٌ بِلِجَامِهَا مَخَافَةَ أَنْ تُسْرِعَ، وَأَبُو سُفْيَانَ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ آخِذٌ بِغَرْزِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: نَادِ فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّمُرَةِ، فَنَادَيْتُ بِأَعْلَى صَوْتِي: يَا أَصْحَابَ السَّمُرَةِ، وَدَاعُونَ فِي الْأَنْصَارِ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ، ثُمَّ قُصِرَتِ الدَّعْوَةُ عَلَى بَنِي الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ، وَكَانُوا أَصْبَرَ عَلَى الْمَوْتِ، فَقَالُوا: يَا لَبَّيْكَ يَا لَبَّيْكَ، فَوَاللهِ مَا شَبَّهْتُ عَطْفَهُمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا كَعَطْفِ بَقَرٍ عَلَى أَوْلَادِهَا، قَالَ: فَتَقَدَّمُوا فَاقْتَتَلُوا قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَنَاوَلَ قَبْضَةً مِنْ حَصْبَاءَ، فَرَمَى بِهَا وُجُوهَ الْقَوْمِ، وَقَالَ: شَاهَتِ الْوُجُوهُ، قَالَ: فَوَاللهِ مَا زِلْتُ أَرَى حَدَّهُمْ كَلِيلًا، وَأَمْرَهُمْ مُدْبِرًا حَتَّى هَزَمَهُمُ اللهُ
✧ I witnessed Hunayn with the Messenger of God ﷺ. When the Muslims were routed, and the Messenger of God ﷺ was on a mule that Farwah b. Nufathah al-Judhami had given him, the Messenger of God ﷺ spurred it toward the faces of the disbelievers while I held its bridle fearing it might bolt. Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib held the stirrup of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Call out to the companions of the acacia tree.' I called at the top of my voice: 'O companions of the acacia tree!' And callers among the Ansar called: 'O company of the Ansar!' Then the call was restricted to Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, and they were the most steadfast in facing death. They said: 'Labbayk, labbayk!' By God, I did not compare their turning toward the Messenger of God ﷺ except to cows turning toward their calves. He said: They advanced and fought fiercely. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw that, he took a handful of pebbles and threw them at the faces of the people, saying: 'May the faces be ugly!' He said: By God, I kept seeing their edge blunted and their affair in retreat until God routed them.

خَرَجْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ، فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهَا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ بَرَّأَ هَذِهِ الْجَزِيرَةَ مِنَ الشِّرْكِ، وَلَكِنْ أَخَافُ أَنْ تُضِلَّهُمُ النُّجُومُ، قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ تُضِلُّهُمُ النُّجُومُ ؟ قَالَ: يَنْزِلُ الْغَيْثُ، فَيَقُولُونَ: مُطِرْنَا بِنَوْءِ كَذَا وَكَذَا
✧ I went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ from Madinah, and he turned toward it and said: 'God has purified this peninsula of polytheism, but I fear that the stars may mislead them.' They said: 'O Messenger of God, how could the stars mislead them?' He said: 'Rain falls, and they say: "We were given rain by such-and-such a star."

كَانُوا يَدْخُلُونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَلَا يَسْتَاكُونَ، فَقَالَ: تَدْخُلُونَ عَلَيَّ قُلْحًا وَلَا تَسْتَاكُونَ ؟ اسْتَاكُوا، لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَفَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ السِّوَاكَ كَمَا فَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْوُضُوءَ. وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: مَا زَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ السِّوَاكَ حَتَّى خَشِينَا أَنْ يَنْزِلَ فِيهِ قُرْآنٌ
✧ They used to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ without using the tooth-stick. He said: 'You enter upon me with yellow teeth and do not use the tooth-stick? Use the tooth-stick. Were it not that I would make things difficult for my community, I would have made the tooth-stick obligatory upon them just as I made ablution obligatory upon them.' Aishah said: 'The Prophet ﷺ kept mentioning the tooth-stick until we feared that Quran would be revealed about it.'

كُنَّا جُلُوسًا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْبَطْحَاءِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: تَدْرُونَ مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: السَّحَابُ، قَالَ: وَالْمُزْنُ، قُلْنَا: وَالْمُزْنُ، قَالَ: وَالْعَنَانُ، قَالَ: فَسَكَتْنَا، فَقَالَ: هَلْ تَدْرُونَ كَمْ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ ؟ قُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: بَيْنَهُمَا مَسِيرَةُ خَمْسِمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ، وَبَيْنَ كُلِّ سَمَاءٍ إِلَى سَمَاءٍ مَسِيرَةُ خَمْسِمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ، وَكِثَفُ كُلِّ سَمَاءٍ مَسِيرَةُ خَمْسِمِائَةِ سَنَةٍ، وَالسَّمَاءُ السَّابِعَةُ بَيْنَ أَسْفَلِهِ وَأَعْلَاهُ كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ثُمَّ فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ ثَمَانِيَةُ أَوْعَالٍ، بَيْنَ رُكَبِهِمْ وَأَظْلَافِهِمْ كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ثُمَّ فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ الْعَرْشُ، وَلَيْسَ يَخْفَى عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ مِنْ أَعْمَالِ بَنِي آدَمَ
✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ in al-Batha. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Do you know what this is?' He said: We said: 'The clouds.' He said: 'And the rain-clouds.' We said: 'And the rain-clouds.' He said: 'And the high clouds.' He said: We fell silent. He said: 'Do you know how much is between heaven and earth?' We said: 'God and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Between them is a distance of five hundred years' journey, and between each heaven and the next is a distance of five hundred years' journey, and the thickness of each heaven is a distance of five hundred years' journey. The seventh heaven, between its bottom and its top, is like what is between heaven and earth. Then above that are eight mountain goats, between their knees and their hooves is like what is between heaven and earth. Then above that is the Throne, and nothing of the deeds of the children of Adam is hidden from Him.'

✧ O Messenger of God, did you benefit Abu Talib? For he used to protect you and become angry for you. He said: 'He is in a shallow part of the Fire, and were it not for me he would be in the lowest depth.'
