107. ✧ 'Uqbah b. 'Amir al-Juhani

    أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ ؟ قَالَ عُقْبَةُ: فَأَمَّنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِهِمَا فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ، ثُمَّ دَعَانِي فَذَكَرْتُ حَدِيثَهُ فِيهِمَا

    ✧ He asked the Prophet ﷺ about the two protective surahs? 'Uqbah said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ led us in the dawn prayer reciting them, then called me." So he mentioned his hadith about them.

    بَيْنَا أَنَا أَقُودُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَقْبٍ مِنْ تِلْكَ النِّقَابِ، قَالَ: يَا عُقْبَ، أَلَا تَرْكَبُ ؟ فَأَجْلَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَرْكَبَ مَرْكَبَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا عُقْبَ، أَلَا تَرْكَبُ ؟ فَأَشْفَقْتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ مَعْصِيَةً، فَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَرَكِبْتُ هُنَيْهَةً، ثُمَّ رَكِبَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا عُقْبَ، أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ سُورَتَيْنِ مِنْ خَيْرِ السُّورَتَيْنِ قَرَأَ بِهِمَا النَّاسُ ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: فَأَقْرَأَنِي: قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ، وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ، ثُمَّ أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، فَتَقَدَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَرَأَ بِهِمَا ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِي، قَالَ: كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ يَا عُقْبَ ؟ اقْرَأْ بِهِمَا كُلَّمَا نِمْتَ وَقُمْتَ

    ✧ While I was leading the Messenger of God ﷺ by the reins through a mountain pass, he said: "O 'Uqbah, will you not ride?" I held back from riding the mount of the Messenger of God ﷺ out of reverence. Then he said: "O 'Uqbah, will you not ride?" I feared it would be disobedience. So the Messenger of God ﷺ dismounted, and I rode for a little while, then he mounted. Then he said: "O 'Uqbah, shall I not teach you two surahs that are among the best surahs that people recite?" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of God." He said: "Then he recited to me: 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak,' and 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.' Then the prayer was called, and the Messenger of God ﷺ went forward and recited them. Then he passed by me and said: "How did you find it, O 'Uqbah? Recite them whenever you sleep and whenever you rise."

    الْمُسِرُّ بِالْقُرْآنِ كَالْمُسِرِّ بِالصَّدَقَةِ، وَالْجَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ كَالْجَاهِرِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

    ✧ The one who recites the Qur'an quietly is like the one who gives charity secretly, and the one who recites the Qur'an aloud is like the one who gives charity openly.

    لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ، قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اجْعَلُوهَا فِي رُكُوعِكُمْ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى، قَالَ: اجْعَلُوهَا فِي سُجُودِكُمْ

    ✧ When it was revealed: "So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great," the Messenger of God ﷺ said to us: "Place it in your bowing." When it was revealed: "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High," he said: "Place it in your prostration."

    أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ لِأَصْحَابِهِ: لَا تُخِيفُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ، أَوْ قَالَ: الْأَنْفُسَ، قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَبِمَ نُخِيفُ أَنْفُسَنَا ؟ قَالَ: بِالدَّيْنِ

    ✧ He heard the Prophet ﷺ saying to his companions: "Do not frighten your selves," or he said: "the selves." It was said: "O Messenger of God, with what do we frighten our selves?" He said: "With debt."

    كُنَّا جُلُوسًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ نَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: تَعَلَّمُوا كِتَابَ اللهِ وَأَفْشُوهُ، قَالَ قَبَاثٌ: حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ: وَتَغَنَّوْا بِهِ، فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَهُوَ أَشَدُّ تَفَلُّتًا مِنَ الْعِشَارِ مِنَ الْعُقُلِ

    ✧ We were sitting in the mosque reciting the Qur'an, when the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon us and said: "Learn the Book of God and spread it." Qabath said: I think he also said: "and chant it. For by the One in whose hand is my soul, it slips away faster than untethered camels."

    ✧ Lands will be opened to you and God will suffice you, so let none of you fail to amuse himself with his arrows.

    هَلَاكُ أُمَّتِي فِي الْكِتَابِ وَاللَّبَنِ، قَالُوا: وَمَا الْكِتَابُ وَاللَّبَنُ ؟ قَالَ: يَتَعَلَّمُونَ الْقُرْآنَ فَيَتَأَوَّلُونَهُ عَلَى غَيْرِ تَأْوِيلِهِ، وَيُحِبُّونَ اللَّبَنَ فَيَدَعُونَ الْجَمَاعَاتِ وَالْجُمَعَ وَيَبْدُونَ

    ✧ The ruin of my nation is in the Book and milk. They said: What is the Book and milk? He said: They learn the Qur'an and interpret it other than its interpretation, and they love milk and abandon the congregations and Friday prayers and go into the desert.

    مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ كُتِبَتْ لَهُ بِكُلِّ خُطْوَةٍ يَخْطُوهَا عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ، وَالْقَاعِدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُ الصَّلَاةَ كَالْقَانِتِ، وَيُكْتَبُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَى بَيْتِهِ

    ✧ Whoever goes out from his house to the mosque, ten good deeds are written for him for every step he takes, and the one sitting in the mosque waiting for the prayer is like the devout worshipper, and is written among those who pray until he returns to his house.

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَلَّى عَلَى قَتْلَى أُحُدٍ بَعْدَ ثَمَانِ سِنِينَ كَالْمُوَدِّعِ لِلْأَحْيَاءِ وَالْأَمْوَاتِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ فَرَطَاتٍ أَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدٌ، وَإِنَّ مَوْعِدَكُمُ الْحَوْضُ، وَإِنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ فِي مَكَانِي هَذَا، وَإِنَّ عَرْضَهُ كَمَا بَيْنَ أَيْلَةَ وَالْجُحْفَةَ، وَإِنِّي أُتِيتُ بِمَفَاتِيحِ خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ وَأَنَا فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا، وَإِنِّي لَسْتُ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُشْرِكُوا، وَلَكِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا أَنْ تَنَافَسُوهَا. قَالَ عُقْبَةُ: فَكَانَ آخِرَ نَظْرَةٍ نَظَرْتُهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over the slain of Uhud after eight years, like one bidding farewell to the living and the dead. He said: Verily before you are forerunners; I am a witness over you. Your appointed meeting is the Hawd, and I see it from this place of mine. Its width is as between Ayla and al-Juhfa. Verily I have been given the keys of the treasures of the earth while I am in this station of mine. Verily I do not fear for you that you associate partners, but I fear for you the world, that you compete for it. 'Uqbah said: It was the last look I looked at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

    سَمِعْتُ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنَ مُخَلَّدٍ، وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَخْطُبُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، أَمَا لَكُمْ فِي الْعَصْبِ وَالْكَتَّانِ مَا يُغْنِيكُمْ عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ ؟ وَهَذَا رَجُلٌ فِيكُمْ يُخْبِرُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، قُمْ يَا عُقْبَةُ، فَقَامَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ. وَأَشْهَدُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا، حُرِمَهُ أَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ

    ✧ I heard Maslama b. Mukhallad while he was standing on the pulpit giving a sermon, saying: O people, do you not have in coarse cloth and linen what suffices you from silk? Here is a man among you who reports from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Stand, O 'Uqbah. So 'Uqbah b. 'Amir stood while I was listening, and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him take his seat in the Fire. And I bear witness that I heard him say: Whoever wears silk in this world will be deprived of wearing it in the Hereafter.

    ✧ Whoever is thrown from his mount in the path of Allah and dies is a martyr.

    ✧ He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about his sister who vowed to walk veiled. So he commanded her to veil, ride, and fast three days.

    ✧ The most deserving conditions to be fulfilled are those by which the private parts are made lawful.

    ثَلَاثُ سَاعَاتٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ فِيهِنَّ، وَأَنْ نَقْبُرَ فِيهِنَّ مَوْتَانَا: حِينَ تَطْلُعُ الشَّمْسُ حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ، وَحِينَ يَقُومُ قَائِمُ الظَّهِيرَةِ حَتَّى تَمِيلَ الشَّمْسُ، وَحِينَ تَضَيَّفُ لِلْغُرُوبِ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ

    ✧ Three hours in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid us to pray and to bury our dead: when the sun rises until it has risen high, when the sun stands at its zenith until it declines, and when it inclines toward setting until it sets.

    ✧ O son of Adam, are you unable to pray four rak'as at the beginning of the day, and I will suffice you for the rest of it?

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided sacrificial animals, and I received a jadha'. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, a jadha' fell to my lot.' He said, 'Sacrifice it.'

    مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ تَمِيمَةً فَلَا أَتَمَّ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَمَنْ تَعَلَّقَ وَدَعَةً فَلَا وَدَعَ اللهُ لَهُ

    ✧ Whoever hangs a tamima, may Allah not complete it for him, and whoever hangs a wada'a, may Allah not grant him peace.

    مَنْ أَعْتَقَ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً فَهِيَ فِدَاؤُهُ مِنَ النَّارِ

    ✧ Whoever frees a believing slave, it will be his ransom from the Fire.

    خَرَجْنَا فِي سَفَرٍ وَمَعَنَا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: صَلِّ بِنَا رَحِمَكَ اللهُ، فَقَالَ: لَا أَفْعَلُ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَمَّ النَّاسَ فَأَصَابَ الْوَقْتَ وَأَتَمَّ الصَّلَاةَ فَلَهُ وَلَهُمْ، وَمَنِ انْتَقَصَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا فَعَلَيْهِ وَلَا عَلَيْهِمْ

    ✧ We went out on a journey, and with us was 'Uqba b. 'Amir. We said to him, 'Lead us in prayer, may Allah have mercy on you.' He said, 'I will not do it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever leads the people in prayer and gets the time right and completes the prayer, the reward is for him and for them. And whoever falls short in any of that, it is against him and not against them."'

    لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَخْطُبَ عَلَى خِطْبَةِ أَخِيهِ حَتَّى يَتْرُكَ، وَلَا يَبِيعَ عَلَى بَيْعِهِ حَتَّى يَتْرُكَ

    ✧ It is not lawful for a Muslim man to propose to a woman when his brother has proposed, until he gives up, nor to buy when his brother has bought, until he gives up.

    أَنَّهُ خَرَجَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ، فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمًا يُحَدِّثُ أَصْحَابَهُ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ قَامَ إِذَا اسْتَقْبَلَتْهُ الشَّمْسُ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ وُضُوءَهُ، ثُمَّ قَامَ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ غُفِرَ لَهُ خَطَايَاهُ، وَكَانَ كَمَا وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ

    ✧ He went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition to Tabuk. One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat talking to his companions and said: "Whoever rises when the sun meets him, performs ablution and does it well, then stands and prays two rak'as, his sins will be forgiven, and he will be as his mother bore him."

    مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَوْ كَانَ لَهُ ثَلَاثُ بَنَاتٍ فَصَبَرَ عَلَيْهِنَّ، فَأَطْعَمَهُنَّ، وَسَقَاهُنَّ، وَكَسَاهُنَّ مِنْ جِدَتِهِ، كُنَّ لَهُ حِجَابًا مِنَ النَّارِ

    ✧ Whoever has three daughters and is patient with them, feeds them, gives them drink, and clothes them from his wealth, they will be a screen for him from the Fire.

    إِنْ كَانَ فِي شَيْءٍ شِفَاءٌ فَفِي شَرْطَةِ حَجَّامٍ، أَوْ شَرْبَةٍ مِنْ عَسَلٍ، أَوْ كَيَّةِ نَارٍ تُصِيبُ الدَّاءَ، وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ الْكَيَّ وَلَا أُحِبُّهُ

    ✧ If there is healing in anything, it is in the cut of a cupper, a drink of honey, or a cauterization that hits the disease. But I dislike cauterization and do not love it.

    الرَّجُلُ فِي ظِلِّ صَدَقَتِهِ حَتَّى يُقْضَى بَيْنَ النَّاسِ، أَوْ قَالَ: حَتَّى يُقْتَصَّ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ

    ✧ A man will be in the shade of his charity until judgment is passed among people—or he said: until retribution is taken among people.

    مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ بَاعَدَ اللهُ مِنْهُ جَهَنَّمَ مَسِيرَةَ مِائَةِ عَامٍ

    ✧ Whoever fasts one day in the path of God, God will distance Hell from him a distance of one hundred years.
