54. ✧ Thawban, may Allah have mercy on him

" مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ فَلَهُ قِيرَاطٌ، وَمَنْ تَبِعَهَا حَتَّى يُقْضَى قَضَاؤُهَا فَلَهُ قِيرَاطَانِ
✧ “Whoever prays over a funeral has a qirat, and whoever follows it until its matter is concluded has two qirats.”

قِيلَ لِثَوْبَانَ مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: حَدِّثْنَا. قَالَ: كَذَبْتُمْ عَلَيَّ وَقُلْتُمْ عَلَيَّ مَا لَمْ أَقُلْ، فَقَالُوا: حَدِّثْنَا. فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَسْجُدُ لِلهِ سَجْدَةً إِلَّا رَفَعَهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهَا دَرَجَةً أَوْ حَطَّ عَنْهُ بِهَا خَطِيئَةً
✧ It was said to Thawban, the freedman of the Messenger of God ﷺ: “Narrate to us.” He said: “You have lied against me and said about me what I did not say.” They said: “Narrate to us.” He said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘No servant prostrates to God a prostration but that God, Mighty and Majestic, raises him a degree by it or removes from him a sin by it.’”

" أَفْضَلُ الدَّنَانِيرِ دِينَارٌ أَنْفَقَهُ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى عِيَالِهِ، وَدِينَارٌ أَنْفَقَهُ عَلَى دَابَّتِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، وَدِينَارٌ أَنْفَقَهُ عَلَى أَصْحَابِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ
✧ The best dinar is a dinar a man spends on his dependents, a dinar he spends on his riding beast in the way of God, and a dinar he spends on his companions in the way of God.

جَاءَتْ بِنْتُ هُبَيْرَةَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَفِي يَدِهَا فَتَخٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ - خَوَاتِيمُ ضِخَامٌ - فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَضْرِبُ يَدَهَا، فَأَتَتْ فَاطِمَةَ تَشْكُو إِلَيْهَا. قَالَ ثَوْبَانُ: فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَلَى فَاطِمَةَ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ، وَقَدْ أَخَذَتْ مِنْ عُنُقِهَا سِلْسِلَةً مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَقَالَتْ: هَذَا أَهْدَاهَا لِي أَبُو حَسَنٍ - وَفِي يَدِهَا السِّلْسِلَةُ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " يَا فَاطِمَةُ، أَيَسُرُّكِ أَنْ يَقُولَ النَّاسُ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي يَدِهَا سِلْسِلَةٌ مِنْ نَارٍ ؟ "، فَخَرَجَ وَلَمْ يَقْعُدْ، فَعَمَدَتْ فَاطِمَةُ إِلَى السِّلْسِلَةِ فَبَاعَتْهَا فَاشْتَرَتْ بِهَا نَسَمَةً فَأَعْتَقَتْهَا، فَبَلَغَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي نَجَّى فَاطِمَةَ بِي مِنَ النَّارِ
✧ The daughter of Hubayra came to the Prophet ﷺ with thick gold rings on her hand, and the Prophet ﷺ began striking her hand. She then went to Fatima complaining to her. Thawban said: The Prophet ﷺ entered upon Fatima while I was with him, and she had taken a gold necklace from her neck and said: This was gifted to me by Abu Hasan—and the necklace was in her hand. The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Fatima, would it please you that people say Fatima bt. Muhammad has a necklace of fire in her hand?" Then he left without sitting. Fatima took the necklace, sold it, bought a slave with it, and set the slave free. This reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "Praise be to God who saved Fatima from the Fire through me."

" لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَلْحَقَ قَبَائِلُ مِنْ أُمَّتِي بِالْمُشْرِكِينَ، وَحَتَّى يَعْبُدُوا الْأَوْثَانَ، وَإِذَا وُضِعَ السَّيْفُ فِي أُمَّتِي لَمْ يُرْفَعْ عَنْهُمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ The Hour will not come until tribes of my community join the polytheists and worship idols, and when the sword is placed among my community it will not be lifted from them until the Day of Resurrection.

" يُوشِكُ أَنْ تَدَاعَى عَلَيْكُمُ الْأُمَمُ كَمَا تَدَاعَى الْقَوْمُ إِلَى قَصْعَتِهِمْ، قَالَ: قِيلَ: مِنْ قِلَّةٍ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، وَلَكِنَّهُ غُثَاءٌ كَغُثَاءِ السَّيْلِ، يُجْعَلُ الْوَهْنَ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ، وَيُنْزَعُ الرُّعْبُ مِنْ قُلُوبِ عَدُوِّكُمْ لِحُبِّكُمُ الدُّنْيَا وَكَرَاهِيَتِكُمُ الْمَوْتَ
✧ The nations are about to call one another against you just as people call one another to their food bowl. It was said: Is it because of our small number? He said: "No, but you will be like the scum of a flood. Weakness will be placed in your hearts, and fear of you will be removed from the hearts of your enemy because of your love of this world and your hatred of death."

" مَنْ يَتَكَفَّلُ لِي بِوَاحِدَةٍ أَتَقَبَّلْ - أَوْ أَتَكَفَّلْ - لَهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ ؟ قَالَ ثَوْبَانُ: فَقُلْتُ: أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ. قَالَ: " لَا تَسْأَلْ أَحَدًا شَيْئًا " فَقَالَ: فَكَانَ ثَوْبَانُ رُبَّمَا وَقَعَ سَوْطُهُ فَيَنْزِلُ حَتَّى يَتَنَاوَلَهُ
✧ Who will guarantee me one thing, and I will guarantee—or I will take responsibility—for him Paradise? Thawban said: I said: I will, O Messenger of God. He said: "Do not ask anyone for anything." He said: Thawban would sometimes drop his whip and dismount to pick it up himself.

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بَعَثَ إِلَى أَبِي سَلَّامٍ الْحَبَشِيِّ - وَحُمِلَ عَلَى الْبَرِيدِ حَتَّى قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ - فَقَالَ: إِنِّي بَعَثْتُ إِلَيْكَ أُشَافِهُكَ بِحَدِيثِ ثَوْبَانَ فِي الْحَوْضِ. فَقَالَ أَبُو سَلَّامٍ: سَمِعْتُ ثَوْبَانَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: حَوْضِي مِنْ عَدَنِ أَبْيَنَ إِلَى عَمَّانِ الْبَلْقَاءِ، أَكْوَابُهُ مِثْلُ عَدَدِ نُجُومِ السَّمَاءِ، مَاؤُهُ أَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ - أَوْ قَالَ: أَشَدُّ بَيَاضًا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ - مَنْ شَرِبَ مِنْهُ شَرْبَةً لَمْ يَظْمَأْ بَعْدَهَا أَبَدًا، أَوَّلُ مَنْ يَرِدُهُ عَلَيَّ فُقَرَاءُ أُمَّتِي "، فَقَامَ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَنْ هُمْ ؟ قَالَ: " هُمُ الشُّعْثُ الرُّءُوسِ، الدُّنْسُ الثِّيَابِ، الَّذِينَ لَا يَنْكِحُونَ الْمُتَنَعِّمَاتِ وَلَا تُفْتَحُ لَهُمْ أَبْوَابُ السُّدَدِ
✧ Umar b. Abd al-Aziz sent for Abu Sallam al-Habashi, and he was brought on the postal mount until he came to him. Umar said: I sent for you to hear from you directly the hadith of Thawban about the Hawd. Abu Sallam said: I heard Thawban say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "My Pool extends from Adan Abyan to Amman al-Balqa; its cups are like the number of stars in the sky; its water is sweeter than honey—or he said: whiter than milk. Whoever drinks a drink from it will never thirst after it. The first to come to me at it are the poor of my community." Umar stood up and said: O Messenger of God, who are they? He said: "They are the disheveled-haired, dusty-clothed, who do not marry women accustomed to luxury and for whom doors of rulers are not opened."

" اسْتَقِيمُوا وَلَنْ تُحْصُوا، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ خَيْرَ دِينِكُمُ الصَّلَاةُ، وَلَا يُحَافِظُ عَلَى الْوُضُوءِ إِلَّا مُؤْمِنٌ
✧ Remain upright, though you will not be able to fully do so. Know that the best part of your religion is prayer, and no one maintains ablution except a believer.
