قَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ، فَدَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَقُلْتُ: اللَّهُمَّ وَفِّقْ لِي جَلِيسًا صَالِحًا، قَالَ: فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ، فَقَالَ لِي: مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ؟ فَقُلْتُ: مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ. فَقَالَ: " أَلَيْسَ فِيكُمْ صَاحِبُ الْوِسَادِ وَالسِّوَاكِ ؟ " يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " أَلَيْسَ فِيكُمْ صَاحِبُ السِّرِّ الَّذِي لَمْ يَكُنْ يَعْلَمُهُ غَيْرُهُ ؟ " يَعْنِي حُذَيْفَةَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " أَلَيْسَ فِيكُمُ الَّذِي أَجَارَهُ اللهُ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ؟ " يَعْنِي عَمَّارًا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: هَلْ تَدْرِي كَيْفَ كَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ يَقْرَأُ وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى ( وَالذَّكَرِ وَالْأُنْثَى ) ؟ فَقُلْتُ: كَانَ يَقْرَؤُهَا وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى، فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: وَاللهِ مَا زَالَ هَؤُلَاءِ بِي حَتَّى كَادُوا يُشَكِّكُونِي. فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: هَكَذَا نَقْرَؤُهَا، وَهَكَذَا سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَقْرَؤُهَا
✧ I came to Syria and entered the mosque and said: 'O God, grant me a righteous companion to sit with.' He said: I sat down next to a man, and it was Abu al-Darda'. He said to me: 'Where are you from?' I said: 'From the people of Kufah.' He said: 'Is not among you the man of the cushion and the toothstick?'—meaning Ibn Mas'ud. Then he said: 'Is not among you the keeper of the secret that no one else knew?'—meaning Hudhayfah. Then he said: 'Is not among you the one whom God protected through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ from Satan?'—meaning 'Ammar. Then he said: 'Do you know how 'Abd Allah used to recite: By the night when it covers, and the male and the female?' I said: 'He used to recite it: By the night when it covers and the day when it shines.' Abu al-Darda' said: 'By God, these people kept at me until they almost made me doubt.' Then Abu al-Darda' said: 'This is how we recite it, and this is how I heard it recited by the Messenger of God ﷺ.'

" أَيَعْجِزُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ ؟ "، قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَمَنْ يُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ: " اقْرَءُوا قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ
✧ 'Would any of you be unable to recite one third of the Qur'an in a night?' It was said: 'O Messenger of God, who can do that?' He said: 'Recite: Say, He is God, the One.'

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَى فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: هِيَ الرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ يَرَاهَا الْمُسْلِمُ أَوْ تُرَى لَهُ
✧ I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about His saying: “Those who believe and were mindful—for them is good news in the life of this world.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “It is the righteous dream that the Muslim sees or is seen for him.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ رَأَى امْرَأَةً مُجِحًّا عَلَى بَابِ فُسْطَاطٍ - أَوْ قَالَ: خِبَاءٍ - فَقَالَ: لَعَلَّ صَاحِبَ هَذِهِ يُلِمُّ بِهَا ! لَقَدْ هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَلْعَنَهُ لَعْنَةً تَدْخُلُ مَعَهُ قَبْرَهُ، كَيْفَ يُوَرِّثُهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ ؟ وَكَيْفَ يَسْتَرِقُّهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ saw a woman far advanced in pregnancy at the door of a tent—or he said: a pavilion—and said: “Perhaps the owner of this tent has intercourse with her! I have considered cursing him with a curse that would enter the grave with him. How can he make him his heir while he is not lawful for him, and how can he enslave him while he is not lawful for him?”

" مَا طَلَعَتْ شَمْسٌ قَطُّ إِلَّا بَعَثَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِجَنَبَتَيْهَا مَلَكَيْنِ يُنَادِيَانِ يُسْمِعَانِ الْخَلَائِقَ كُلَّهَا إِلَّا الثَّقَلَيْنِ: اللَّهُمَّ عَجِّلْ لِمُنْفِقٍ خَلَفًا، وَأَعْطِ مُمْسِكًا تَلَفًا، وَمَا آبَتْ شَمْسٌ قَطُّ إِلَّا بَعَثَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِجَنَبَتَيْهَا مَلَكَيْنِ يُنَادِيَانِ يُسْمِعَانِ الْخَلَائِقَ إِلَّا الثَّقَلَيْنِ: مَا قَلَّ وَكَفَى خَيْرٌ مِمَّا كَثُرَ وَأَلْهَى
✧ “The sun has never risen but that God, Mighty and Majestic, sends two angels by its sides who call out, making all creation hear except the two heavy ones (humans and jinn): ‘O God, hasten for the spender a replacement, and give the withholder ruin.’ And the sun has never set but that God, Mighty and Majestic, sends two angels by its sides who call out, making all creation hear except the two heavy ones: ‘What is little and suffices is better than what is much and distracts.’”

كَانَ الضَّيْفُ إِذَا نَزَلَ بِأَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ: أَمُقِيمٌ فَنَرْعَى أَوْ مُنْطَلِقٌ فَنَعْلِفُ ؟ فَإِنْ قَالَ: مُنْطَلِقٌ قَالَ: أُخْبِرُكَ بِمَا أَخْبَرَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، ذَهَبَ أَهْلُ الْأَمْوَالِ بِالدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ؛ يُصَلُّونَ كَمَا نُصَلِّي، وَيُجَاهِدُونَ كَمَا نُجَاهِدُ، وَيَذْكُرُونَ كَمَا نَذْكُرُ، وَيَتَصَدَّقُونَ وَلَيْسَ عِنْدَنَا مَا نَتَصَدَّقُ ! فَقَالَ لِي: أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِشَيْءٍ إِذَا فَعَلْتَهُ لَمْ يُدْرِكْكَ مَنْ جَاءَ وَلَحِقْتَ مَنْ سَبَقَكَ ؟ تُكَبِّرُ اللهَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتُسَبِّحُهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتَحْمَدُهُ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ لَحِقْتَ مَنْ سَبَقَكَ وَلَمْ يَلْحَقْكَ مَنْ جَاءَ بَعْدَكَ إِلَّا مَنْ قَالَ مِثْلَ مَا قُلْتَ
✧ When a guest would stay with Abu al-Darda’, he would say: “Are you staying, so we may pasture (the animals), or leaving, so we may feed (them)?” If he said, “Leaving,” he said: “I will tell you what the Messenger of God ﷺ told me. I said: ‘O Messenger of God, the wealthy have taken the world and the Hereafter; they pray as we pray, strive as we strive, remember as we remember, and give charity, while we have nothing to give.’ He said to me: ‘Shall I not tell you something that if you do it, no one who comes after you will catch you, and you will catch up with those who preceded you? Say God is greatest after every prayer thirty-four times, glorify Him thirty-three times, and praise Him thirty-three times. If you do that, you will catch up with those who preceded you, and no one who comes after you will catch you except one who says the like of what you said.’”

أَنَّ رَجُلَيْنِ اخْتَصَمَا إِلَى أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ فِي شِبْرٍ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا كُنْتَ فِي أَرْضٍ فَسَمِعْتَ رَجُلَيْنِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ فِي شِبْرِ أَرْضٍ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا، فَخَرَجَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ فَأَتَى الشَّامَ
✧ Two men brought a dispute over a span of land to Abu al-Darda’. Abu al-Darda’ said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘If you are in a land and hear two men disputing over a span of land, leave it.’ So Abu al-Darda’ left and went to Syria.”

" إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَرَغَ إِلَى خَلْقِهِ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ؛ مِنْ أَجَلِهِ، وَعَمَلِهِ، وَأَثَرِهِ، وَمَضْجَعِهِ، وَرِزْقِهِ
✧ “God, Mighty and Majestic, has finished with His creation regarding five things: his term, his action, his trace, his resting place, and his provision.”
