✧ When a guest would stay with Abu al-Darda’, he would say: “Are you staying, so we may pasture (the animals), or leaving, so we may feed (them)?” If he said, “Leaving,” he said: “I will tell you what the Messenger of God ﷺ told me. I said: ‘O Messenger of God, the wealthy have taken the world and the Hereafter; they pray as we pray, strive as we strive, remember as we remember, and give charity, while we have nothing to give.’ He said to me: ‘Shall I not tell you something that if you do it, no one who comes after you will catch you, and you will catch up with those who preceded you? Say God is greatest after every prayer thirty-four times, glorify Him thirty-three times, and praise Him thirty-three times. If you do that, you will catch up with those who preceded you, and no one who comes after you will catch you except one who says the like of what you said.’”

machine translationIt is narrated by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ and al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah, and there is disagreement about them. As for ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ, Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd and Abū l-Aḥwaṣ Sallām b. Sulaym narrated it from him, and both said: from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. Sufyān al-Thawrī contradicted them and narrated it from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ, from Abū ʿUmar al-Ṣīnī, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. Sharīk said: from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ, from Abū ʿUmar, from Umm al-Dardāʾ, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. Sharīk was not corroborated in mentioning Umm al-Dardāʾ. As for al-Ḥakam, Mālik b. Mighwal, Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj and Zayd b. Abī Unaysah narrated it from him. Shuʿbah and Mālik b. Mighwal said: from al-Ḥakam, from Abū ʿUmar al-Ṣīnī, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. Zayd b. Abī Unaysah said: from al-Ḥakam, from Abū ʿUmar, from a man, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. Layth b. Abī Sulaym also narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. It was said from him: al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. And al-Ḥimmānī said: from al-Muḥāribī, from Layth, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. But this is not from the hadith of Ibn Abī Laylā, nor from the hadith of Mujāhid. The correct one among these is the statement of Shuʿbah and Mālik b. Mighwal, from al-Ḥakam, from Abū ʿUmar al-Ṣīnī, from Abū l-Dardāʾ, and the statement of al-Thawrī, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Rufayʿ, from Abū ʿUmar, from Abū l-Dardāʾ. He was asked about the name of Abū ʿUmar al-Ṣīnī and said: He is not known, and nothing was narrated from him other than this hadith.
