✧ There was a fright in Madinah, and the people began to go this way and that. I entered the mosque, and there was Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, sitting with his sword straps wrapped around him near the minbar—the minbar of the Prophet ﷺ. He said: I sat with Salim, and the Prophet ﷺ came and ascended the minbar and said: 'O people, should not your place of refuge have been to God and His Messenger? Should you not have done what these two believing men did?'

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for me, saying: 'Put on your weapon and come to me.' I did so, and I entered upon him. He lowered his gaze at me and then raised it, and said to me: 'O 'Amr, I want to send you out on an expedition, and God will give you booty, and I will grant you a good share of wealth.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, by God, I did not become Muslim for the sake of wealth.' He said: 'O 'Amr, excellent is righteous wealth for a righteous man.'

✧ 'Amr b. al-'As said: 'O Messenger of God, who is the most beloved of people to you?' He said: ''A'ishah.' He said: 'I mean among men.' He said: 'Her father.'

✧ I witnessed 'Amr b. al-'As when Muhammad b. Abi Bakr was brought to him—he had been governor over Egypt—and he was bound. 'Amr said to him: 'Do you have a guarantee of safety? Has anyone given you protection?' He did not mention that he had any guarantee. 'Amr said: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: The humblest of the Muslims may grant protection on behalf of the Muslims.' He said: Then his neck was struck.

✧ 'Amr b. al-'As grieved intensely at the time of death. His son 'Abd Allah said to him: 'Why this grief, when the Messenger of God ﷺ used to appoint you and keep you close?' He said: 'O my son, I will tell you about that. He used to do that, and by God, I do not know whether it was out of love or a conciliation he was using toward me. But I testify concerning two men that he departed this world loving them: the son of Umm 'Abd and the son of Sumayyah.'

✧ He sent him to 'Ali to seek permission on behalf of Asma' bt. 'Umays, and he granted him permission. When he had finished his errand, the freedman asked 'Amr about that. He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade us—or he forbade—entering upon women without the permission of their husbands.'
