Translation
✧ [Kaʿb's poetry on the day of Dhū Qarad] Kaʿb b. Mālik said on the day of Dhū Qarad concerning the horsemen: Do the sons of the foundling woman think that we, on horseback, are not like them among the horsemen? We are a people who do not regard killing as a disgrace, and we do not turn back before the thrusting spears. We indeed entertain the guest from the tops of the sandhills, and we strike the head of the haughty, insolent one. We repulse the warriors of the marked ones when they boast, with blows that make the vaunt of the laggard cease. With every young man, protector of what is sacred, glorious, generous, like a wolf of the ghaḍā trees, snatching. They defend their honors and their inherited wealth with white swords that cleave the skulls beneath the helmets. Ask the Banū Badr when you meet them what the brothers did on the day of mutual struggle. When you go out, tell the truth to those you meet, and do not conceal your news in the assemblies. And say: We slipped away from the claws of a lion with heat in the breast as long as one does not fight. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd recited to me his verse: “We indeed entertain the guest.”
