Ibn Ḥiṣn's raid on the Messenger's milch-camels
Translation
✧ [The gallantry of Ibn al-Akwaʿ in this expedition] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, and one whom I do not suspect, narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik, each having related part of the account of the expedition of Dhū Qarad: that the first to give warning of them was Salamah b. ʿAmr b. al-Akwaʿ al-Aslamī. He went out early, intending [to go to] al-Ghābah, carrying his bow and arrows slung over his shoulder, and with him was a servant of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, leading a horse of his. When he ascended Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ, he saw some of their horses and looked out toward the side of Salʿ; then he cried out: “Wā ṣabāḥāh!” Then he set off hastening in the tracks of the people. He was like a beast of prey until he caught up with the people, and he began turning them back with arrows, saying whenever he shot: “Take it! I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ; today is the day of the sucklings.” When the horses were turned toward him, he fled; then he opposed them, and when shooting became possible for him, he shot and said: “Take it! I am Ibn al-Akwaʿ; today is the day of the sucklings.” He said: One of them would say, “Is it our little ʿAkwaʿ? He is the first of the day.”
