✧ The death of Āminah and the state of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his grandfather ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib after her [The death of Āminah] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with his mother Āminah bt. Wahb and his grandfather ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim under Allah's guardianship and protection. Allah was causing him to grow in a fine manner because of the honour He intended for him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached six years of age, his mother Āminah bt. Wahb died. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allah b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm related to me that the mother of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Āminah, died when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was six years old at al-Abwāʾ, between Makkah and Madinah. She had brought him to visit his maternal uncles of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, and she died while returning with him to Makkah.

✧ [The reason for the maternal kinship of Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Hishām said: The mother of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim was Salmā bt. ʿAmr of the Najjār clan. This is the maternal kinship that Ibn Isḥāq mentioned for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among them.

✧ [ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's honoring of him ﷺ when he was small] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with his grandfather ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim, and a bed was placed for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib in the shade of the Kaʿbah. His sons would sit around that bed of his until he came out to it, none of his sons sitting on it out of reverence for him. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come, while he was a weaned boy, until he sat on it, and his paternal uncles would take hold of him to move him away from it, and ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib would say, when he saw that from them: "Leave my son, for by Allah, he has a great affair." Then he would seat him with him on the bed, and wipe his back with his hand, and it pleased him what he saw him do.

✧ The death of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and what was said in poetry about him: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached eight years of age, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim died. That was eight years after the Elephant. Ibn Isḥāq said: al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Maʿbad b. al-ʿAbbās narrated to me from some of his family that ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib died when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was eight years old. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib narrated to me that when death came to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and he knew that he was dying, he gathered his daughters—they were six women: Ṣafiyyah, Barrah, ʿĀtikah, Umm Ḥakīm al-Bayḍāʾ, Umaymah, and Arwā—and said to them: 'Weep over me so that I may hear what you say before I die.' Ibn Hishām said: I have not seen anyone among the people of knowledge of poetry who knows this poetry, but since he narrated it from Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, we have written it down.

✧ [Ṣafiyyah's lament for her father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: I lay awake at the voice of a wailing woman at night, mourning a man on the edge of the hard ground. Then my tears overflowed at that, down my cheek like the sliding of pierced pearls, For a noble man, no base intruder, whose surpassing merit over all servants is clear, For the bountiful Shaybah, possessor of lofty deeds—your father, the good, heir of every generosity— Truthful in every trial, no weakling, nor feeble in standing, nor one who leans on others; Long of reach, noble in bearing, tall and lean, obeyed among his kinsmen, praiseworthy; Lofty of house, bright of face, possessed of abundant virtues, the rain of men in the barren season; Generous of fortune, free of all blemish, surpassing both the chieftain and the one made chieftain; Great of forbearance, of a noble band, lords of plenty, fierce as lions. If any man could live forever through ancient glory—but there is no way to immortality— He would have been made immortal through the rest of the nights, for the excellence of his glory and his ancient, inherited nobility.

✧ [Umm Ḥakīm's elegy for her father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Umm Ḥakīm al-Bayḍāʾ bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: Alas, O eye, be generous and begin to flow; weep for this man of munificence and noble deeds. Alas, O eye, woe to you, assist me with tears from abundant, pouring weepings. Weep for the best of those who have ridden mounts: your father, goodness itself, the abundant flood of the Euphrates. Tall of reach, Shaybah of lofty aspirations, noble of nature, praised in his gifts. One who maintains kinship ties, a lordly man, and a rain-laden cloud in barren years. A lion when spears clash, at whom the eyes of beholders gaze with delight. The chieftain of the sons of Kinānah and the one hoped for when the age brings misfortunes. Its refuge when a calamity stirs with a grave disaster, and the adversary of intractable difficulties. So weep for him, and do not desist in sorrow; weep, as long as the weepers remain.

✧ [Umaymah's Elegy for Her Father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Umaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: Alas, the shepherd of the clan, the one of loss, has perished, And the waterer of the pilgrims, and the defender of glory, And he to whose houses the stranger guest is brought When the sky of the people is stingy with thunder. You earned as a child the best that a young man earns, And you did not cease to increase, O Shaybah of praise. Abū al-Ḥārith al-Fayyāḍ has left his place, So be not far, for every living thing goes to distance. Indeed I am weeping as long as I live, and in pain, And he was worthy of it because of my grief. May the Guardian of the people water you in the grave with rain, And I shall weep for him, even though he is in the tomb. He was an ornament for the entire clan, And he was praiseworthy wherever there was praise.

✧ [Arwā's Elegy for Her Father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Arwā bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: My eyes wept—and weeping was their due— for a generous man whose disposition is modesty, for an easy-natured Abṭaḥī, noble of character, whose intention is loftiness, for the overflowing Shaybah, possessor of high virtues, your father, the good, who has no equal, long of reach, smooth, a tall sturdy one, more radiant, as if the blaze on his forehead were light, lean-flanked, awe-inspiring, possessed of merits, to whom belongs foremost glory and eminence, refusing humiliation, bright-faced, a lion-like chief, of ancient glory, with no obscurity in him. He was the refuge of Mālik and the spring of Fihr, and its arbiter when judgment was sought. He was the youth in generosity, munificence, and courage when blood is shed, when the brave feared death until the hearts of most of them were as air. He advanced boldly on a dappled, sharpened steed, on him, when you see him, splendor. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib asserted to me that he gestured with his head while he had become speechless: “Like this, then weep for me.” [The Lineage of al-Musayyib] Ibn Hishām said: [And] al-Musayyib b. ✧ [The Elegy of Ḥudhayfah for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said, weeping for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf, and mentioning his excellence and the excellence of Quṣayy over Quraysh, and the excellence of his descendants after him over them—that is, because he was seized for a fine of four thousand dirhams in Makkah, and he stood there, and Abū Lahab ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib passed by him and ransomed him: My two eyes, flow generously with tears upon the chest, And do not weary; may you be given the pouring rain of the downpour. And flow with tears and shed them every morning, The weeping of a man whom the calamity of time has not marred. (And pour and stream and shed as long as you remain alive, For a man of modesty among Quraysh and of protection.) For a man strong in powers, possessed of zeal, Beautiful of countenance, not ignoble and not babbling. For the noble, cheerful one, of ample reach and generosity, The spring of Luʾayy in drought and in hardship. For the best barefoot and sandaled one of Maʿadd, Generous in endeavors, good in nature and in origin. And the best of them in root and branch and source, And the most fortunate of them in honorable deeds and in remembrance. And the first of them in glory and forbearance and intelligence, And in excellence in the crushing disasters of the dust. For Shaybah of praise, whose face Would illuminate the darkness of night like the full moon. And the waterer of the pilgrims, then for the good of Hāshim And ʿAbd Manāf, that was the chief of Fihr. He filled in Zamzam near the Station, and so his watering-place became A source of pride over every possessor of pride. Let every captive in distress weep for him, And the family of Quṣayy, of the poor and the wealthy. His sons are chiefs, their elders and their youths; From them has hatched the egg of the falcon. Quṣayy, who opposed Kinānah entirely, And kept watch over the House of Allah in hardship and in ease. If death and its vicissitudes have taken him away, He lived fortunate in disposition and in command. And he left behind men, lords not defenseless, Fierce ones like Rudaynī spears of brown. Abū ʿUtbah, to whom his tent ropes are entrusted, Noble, pure of color, from a noble band. And Ḥamzah, like the full moon, who moves for generosity, Clean of garments and of the protection from treachery. And ʿAbd Manāf, noble, possessed of zeal, Keeping ties with the near of kin, merciful to the in-law. Their elders are the best of elders, and their offspring is Like the offspring of kings; it does not perish nor decline. Whenever you meet among them a young man of time, You find him following the course of his forerunners. They have filled the valley with glory and might When good things were competed for in the past age. Among them are builders of loftiness and ʿImārah, And ʿAbd Manāf their ancestor, mender of the break. By the marriage of ʿAwf to his daughter, so that he might protect us From our enemies when Banū Fihr abandoned us. So we traveled the lowlands of the lands and their highlands Under his protection, until the caravans waded into the sea. They were present while the people were in the desert, with only a portion [sedentary], And there were none there but the elders of Banū ʿAmr. They built many dwellings and dug in it Wells gushing water from the midst of a sea, So that the pilgrims and others might drink from them When they hastened to them in the morning of the day of sacrifice. For three days their riding camels remain Hobbled between al-Akhāshib and al-Ḥijr. And formerly we had been rich for a long time before that, And we did not draw water except from Khumm or al-Ḥafr. And they forgive the sin that is avenged besides it, And they pardon the word of foolishness and of obscenity. And they gathered the confederacy of all the Aḥābīsh, And they punished the transgressors of Banū Bakr on our behalf. So go forth, for if they perish, then never cease To be grateful to them until you are hidden in the grave. And do not forget what Ibn Lubnā did, for he Did a deed deserving of gratitude from you. And you are Ibn Lubnā from Quṣayy when they trace descent, To where the intention of the heart reaches from the chest. And you attained loftiness and gathered it To a root of glory, of broad and strong foundation. You preceded and surpassed the people in giving and bestowal, And you ruled as a child, surpassing every ruler of great abundance. And your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah, a jewel, When the experts one day determine the lineages, To Sabaʾ of the heroes she is traced and belongs; So honor her as a relation among the heights of the shining ones. Abū Shamar is of them, and ʿAmr b. Mālik, And Dhū Jadan of her people, and Abū al-Jabr. And Asʿad led the people for twenty pilgrimages, Supported in those stations with victory. Ibn Hishām said: “Your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah”—he means Abū Lahab; his mother is Lubnā bt. Hājir al-Khuzāʿī. And his saying “following the course of his forerunners” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Maṭrūd b. Kaʿb al-Khuzāʿī said, weeping for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and the Banū ʿAbd Manāf: O you man who is moving his saddle, why did you not ask about the family of ʿAbd Manāf? May your mother be bereft of you! Had you alighted at their abode, they would have protected you from crime and from disgrace. They mingle their rich with their poor, until their poor becomes like the sufficient one; They are gracious when the stars change, and they set out for the journey of the covenant; They feed when the winds strive together, until the sun sets in the trembling; Indeed, if you have perished, O father of deeds, no knot of a woman with a string has ever run above the like of you, Except your father, the brother of noble qualities, alone, and the overflowing Muṭṭalib, father of guests.

✧ [Al-ʿAbbās's Authority over the Watering of Zamzam] Ibn Isḥāq said: When ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim died, al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib took charge of Zamzam and the watering thereof after him. At that time he was the youngest of his brothers in age. It remained in his charge until Islam arose, and it was still in his hand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ confirmed it for him according to his previous authority. Thus it belongs to the family of al-ʿAbbās, by virtue of al-ʿAbbās's charge over it, to this day.
