Translation

✧ [Ṣafiyyah's lament for her father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Ṣafiyyah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: I lay awake at the voice of a wailing woman at night, mourning a man on the edge of the hard ground. Then my tears overflowed at that, down my cheek like the sliding of pierced pearls, For a noble man, no base intruder, whose surpassing merit over all servants is clear, For the bountiful Shaybah, possessor of lofty deeds—your father, the good, heir of every generosity— Truthful in every trial, no weakling, nor feeble in standing, nor one who leans on others; Long of reach, noble in bearing, tall and lean, obeyed among his kinsmen, praiseworthy; Lofty of house, bright of face, possessed of abundant virtues, the rain of men in the barren season; Generous of fortune, free of all blemish, surpassing both the chieftain and the one made chieftain; Great of forbearance, of a noble band, lords of plenty, fierce as lions. If any man could live forever through ancient glory—but there is no way to immortality— He would have been made immortal through the rest of the nights, for the excellence of his glory and his ancient, inherited nobility.
