Translation

✧ [Arwā's Elegy for Her Father ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Arwā bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, weeping for her father: My eyes wept—and weeping was their due— for a generous man whose disposition is modesty, for an easy-natured Abṭaḥī, noble of character, whose intention is loftiness, for the overflowing Shaybah, possessor of high virtues, your father, the good, who has no equal, long of reach, smooth, a tall sturdy one, more radiant, as if the blaze on his forehead were light, lean-flanked, awe-inspiring, possessed of merits, to whom belongs foremost glory and eminence, refusing humiliation, bright-faced, a lion-like chief, of ancient glory, with no obscurity in him. He was the refuge of Mālik and the spring of Fihr, and its arbiter when judgment was sought. He was the youth in generosity, munificence, and courage when blood is shed, when the brave feared death until the hearts of most of them were as air. He advanced boldly on a dappled, sharpened steed, on him, when you see him, splendor. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib asserted to me that he gestured with his head while he had become speechless: “Like this, then weep for me.” [The Lineage of al-Musayyib] Ibn Hishām said: [And] al-Musayyib b. Ḥazn b. Abī Wahb b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀʾidh b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm.
