Translation

✧ [The Elegy of Ḥudhayfah for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said, weeping for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf, and mentioning his excellence and the excellence of Quṣayy over Quraysh, and the excellence of his descendants after him over them—that is, because he was seized for a fine of four thousand dirhams in Makkah, and he stood there, and Abū Lahab ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib passed by him and ransomed him: My two eyes, flow generously with tears upon the chest, And do not weary; may you be given the pouring rain of the downpour. And flow with tears and shed them every morning, The weeping of a man whom the calamity of time has not marred. (And pour and stream and shed as long as you remain alive, For a man of modesty among Quraysh and of protection.) For a man strong in powers, possessed of zeal, Beautiful of countenance, not ignoble and not babbling. For the noble, cheerful one, of ample reach and generosity, The spring of Luʾayy in drought and in hardship. For the best barefoot and sandaled one of Maʿadd, Generous in endeavors, good in nature and in origin. And the best of them in root and branch and source, And the most fortunate of them in honorable deeds and in remembrance. And the first of them in glory and forbearance and intelligence, And in excellence in the crushing disasters of the dust. For Shaybah of praise, whose face Would illuminate the darkness of night like the full moon. And the waterer of the pilgrims, then for the good of Hāshim And ʿAbd Manāf, that was the chief of Fihr. He filled in Zamzam near the Station, and so his watering-place became A source of pride over every possessor of pride. Let every captive in distress weep for him, And the family of Quṣayy, of the poor and the wealthy. His sons are chiefs, their elders and their youths; From them has hatched the egg of the falcon. Quṣayy, who opposed Kinānah entirely, And kept watch over the House of Allah in hardship and in ease. If death and its vicissitudes have taken him away, He lived fortunate in disposition and in command. And he left behind men, lords not defenseless, Fierce ones like Rudaynī spears of brown. Abū ʿUtbah, to whom his tent ropes are entrusted, Noble, pure of color, from a noble band. And Ḥamzah, like the full moon, who moves for generosity, Clean of garments and of the protection from treachery. And ʿAbd Manāf, noble, possessed of zeal, Keeping ties with the near of kin, merciful to the in-law. Their elders are the best of elders, and their offspring is Like the offspring of kings; it does not perish nor decline. Whenever you meet among them a young man of time, You find him following the course of his forerunners. They have filled the valley with glory and might When good things were competed for in the past age. Among them are builders of loftiness and ʿImārah, And ʿAbd Manāf their ancestor, mender of the break. By the marriage of ʿAwf to his daughter, so that he might protect us From our enemies when Banū Fihr abandoned us. So we traveled the lowlands of the lands and their highlands Under his protection, until the caravans waded into the sea. They were present while the people were in the desert, with only a portion [sedentary], And there were none there but the elders of Banū ʿAmr. They built many dwellings and dug in it Wells gushing water from the midst of a sea, So that the pilgrims and others might drink from them When they hastened to them in the morning of the day of sacrifice. For three days their riding camels remain Hobbled between al-Akhāshib and al-Ḥijr. And formerly we had been rich for a long time before that, And we did not draw water except from Khumm or al-Ḥafr. And they forgive the sin that is avenged besides it, And they pardon the word of foolishness and of obscenity. And they gathered the confederacy of all the Aḥābīsh, And they punished the transgressors of Banū Bakr on our behalf. So go forth, for if they perish, then never cease To be grateful to them until you are hidden in the grave. And do not forget what Ibn Lubnā did, for he Did a deed deserving of gratitude from you. And you are Ibn Lubnā from Quṣayy when they trace descent, To where the intention of the heart reaches from the chest. And you attained loftiness and gathered it To a root of glory, of broad and strong foundation. You preceded and surpassed the people in giving and bestowal, And you ruled as a child, surpassing every ruler of great abundance. And your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah, a jewel, When the experts one day determine the lineages, To Sabaʾ of the heroes she is traced and belongs; So honor her as a relation among the heights of the shining ones. Abū Shamar is of them, and ʿAmr b. Mālik, And Dhū Jadan of her people, and Abū al-Jabr. And Asʿad led the people for twenty pilgrimages, Supported in those stations with victory. Ibn Hishām said: “Your mother is a secret of Khuzāʿah”—he means Abū Lahab; his mother is Lubnā bt. Hājir al-Khuzāʿī. And his saying “following the course of his forerunners” is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
