✧ We were with Uthman b. Affan ؓ, and a man began to praise him, so al-Miqdad began to throw dust in his face – meaning dirt – and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "When you see the flatterers, throw dust in their faces."

✧ "O Allah, feed the one who feeds me, and give drink to the one who gives me drink." When I heard that, I tightened my cloak, took the knife, and went to the goats, looking and choosing which of them was fattest so that I could slaughter it for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I felt them and found that all of them were full of milk, so I went to a vessel belonging to the family of Muhammad which they had no hope of milking into, and I milked into it until the froth rose above it. Then I brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: "Have you not drunk your drink?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, drink." So he drank, then handed it to me, and I said: "Drink." So he drank, then handed it to me, and I took what remained. When I knew that the Prophet ﷺ had drunk and I was safe from his supplication, I laughed until I fell to the ground. He said: "One of your misdeeds, O Miqdad?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, my affair was such and such," and I told him what I had done. The Prophet ﷺ said: "This was nothing but a mercy from Allah. Why did you not inform me so that we could wake our two companions?" I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I do not care if you and I get some of it, who among the people gets some of it." This wording we do not know to be narrated except from al-Miqdad alone, and we do not know any chain for it from al-Miqdad except this chain.

✧ O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man I met who fought me and cut off one of my hands, then took refuge from me behind a tree and said: "I have submitted to Allah." Should I kill him, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "If you kill him, he is in the same position as you were before you fought him, and you are in the same position as he was before he said the word he said."

✧ Al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad came for a need, so we said: "Sit down until we seek your need for you." So he sat down and said: "I am amazed at a people I passed by who wish for trials, claiming that Allah will test them in them as He tested His Messenger ﷺ and his companions ؓ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The happy one is the one who is kept away from trials, the happy one is the one who is kept away from trials' – he repeated it three times – 'except the one who is tested and is patient.'" And by Allah, I will not testify for anyone that he is among the people of Paradise until I know what he dies upon, after a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The heart of the son of Adam changes more violently than a pot when it boils."

✧ "What do you say about adultery?" They said: "It is forbidden; Allah and His Messenger have forbidden it, so it is forbidden until the Day of Resurrection." He said: "For a man to commit adultery with ten women is easier for him than to commit adultery with his neighbor's wife. What do you say about theft?" They said: "It is forbidden; Allah and His Messenger have forbidden it, so it is forbidden until the Day of Resurrection." He said: "For a man to steal from ten houses is easier for him than to steal from his neighbor's house."

✧ People used to go out for two or three days and defecate like camels defecate. One day, al-Miqdad went out for his need until he came to al-Baqi' – and it is Baqi' al-Gharqad – and entered an old ruin for his need. While he was sitting, a rat came out of a hole and brought out a dinar, and it kept bringing out dinar after dinar until it brought out seventeen dinars. Then it brought out the edge of a rag. Al-Miqdad said: I got up and took it, and I found in it a dinar, so they became eighteen dinars. I went out with them until I brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him their story. He said: "Did you put your hand into the hole?" I said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth." He said: "There is no charity due on them; may Allah bless them for you." No sooner did the last of it end than I saw sacks of silver in the house of al-Miqdad.

✧ I do hope for them—meaning his wives—the siddiqun. We said: O Messenger of God, who are the siddiqun? Are they the children of those who die while they are young? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The siddiqun are those who give charity."
