حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمِنْقَرِيُّ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْكَبِيرِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: نَا الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَادِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْكِنْدِيِّ - وَكَانَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا - أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:

يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا لَقِيتُهُ فَقَاتَلَنِي، فَقَطَعَ إِحْدَى يَدَيَّ، ثُمَّ لَاذَ مِنِّي بِشَجَرَةٍ فَقَالَ: أَسْلَمْتُ لِلهِ أَفَأَقْتُلُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: إِنْ قَتَلْتَهُ فَهُوَ بِمَنْزِلَتِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُقَاتِلَهُ، وَأَنْتَ بِمَنْزِلَتِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُولَ كَلِمَتَهُ الَّتِي قَالَ

✧ O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man I met who fought me and cut off one of my hands, then took refuge from me behind a tree and said: "I have submitted to Allah." Should I kill him, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "If you kill him, he is in the same position as you were before you fought him, and you are in the same position as he was before he said the word he said."

Muslim: Abū al-Walīd al-Qurashī narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī and al-Layth b. Saʿd, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd and omitted Ibrāhīm b. Murrah. ʿĪsā b. Musāwir contradicted him and narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention Ibrāhīm b. Murrah in it, and put Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in the place of ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd. Al-Firyābī narrated it from al-Awzāʿī, from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, as a mursal report from al-Miqdād. The correct one is the version of Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and those who followed him.
