43. Asking Permission

  1. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1051Sahih

✧ He was ten years old when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah. My mothers urged me to serve him, and I served him for ten years. He died when I was twenty years old, so I was the most knowledgeable of people about the matter of the veil. The first time it was revealed was when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh. He awoke with her as a bridegroom and invited the people. They ate the food, then left, but a group remained with the Prophet ﷺ and stayed long. He stood and went out, and I went out so that they might leave. He walked and I walked with him until he reached the threshold of ʿĀʾisha's room. Then he thought they had left, so he returned and I returned with him until he entered upon Zaynab, but they were still sitting. He returned and I returned until he reached the threshold of ʿĀʾisha's room, and he thought they had left. He returned and I returned with him, and they had left. The Prophet ﷺ then drew the curtain between me and him, and the verse of veiling was revealed.

  2. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1052Sahih

✧ About the three times of nakedness, and he used to act upon them. He said: 'What do you want?' I said: 'I want to act upon them.' He said: 'When I remove my garments at midday, no one of my family who has reached puberty may enter upon me except with my permission, unless I call him; that is his permission. And not when dawn breaks and people move about until the prayer is prayed, and not when I have prayed ʿIshāʾ and removed my garments until I sleep.'

  3. Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1053Sahih

'A'isha said, "I used to eat date and butter mixture with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. 'Umar visited and the Prophet invited him and he ate. 'Umar's hand touched my fingers and he said, 'Oh! If I were to be obeyed about you, no eye would ever see you!' Then the veil was revealed."

✧ He reported to him from Abu Musa: I asked permission to enter upon Umar three times, and permission was not granted to me, so I turned away. He sent after me and said, "O servant of Allah, is it hard on you that you should be stopped at my door? Know that people are like that, it is hard on them to be stopped at your door." I said, "Rather I asked permission to enter upon you three times, and permission was not granted to me, so I returned." He said, "From whom did you hear this?" I said, "I heard it from the Prophet ﷺ." He said, "Did you hear from the Prophet ﷺ what we did not hear? If you do not bring me clear proof of this, I will make an example of you." So I went out until I came to a group of the Ansar sitting in the mosque, and I asked them. They said, "Does anyone doubt this?" I told them what Umar had said. They said, "No one will stand with you except the youngest of us." So Abu Sa'id al-Khudri or Abu Mas'ud stood up with me and went to Umar. He said, "We went out with the Prophet ﷺ while he was going to Sa'd b. Ubadah until he came to him. He greeted, but permission was not granted to him. Then he greeted a second time, then a third time, but permission was not granted to him. He said, 'We have fulfilled what was due from us.' Then he returned. Sa'd caught up with him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, you did not greet once except that I heard and answered you, but I preferred that you should give many greetings of peace upon me and upon my household.'" Abu Musa said, "By Allah, I was trustworthy in transmitting the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Yes, but I wished to ascertain."

I asked him about vessels, and I did not ask him about anything except that he said, "Forbidden," until I asked him about the waterskin. He said, "Forbidden." Muhammad said: "A hide is put over its opening and tied."
