✧ When Umar ؓ was stabbed, we entered upon him while he was saying: Do not rush to this man. If I live, I will see my opinion about him; if I die, he is your affair. They said: O Commander of the Faithful, by Allah, he has been killed and cut to pieces. He said ؓ: Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. Then he said ؓ: Woe to you, who is he? They said: Abu Lu'lu'ah. He said ؓ: Allah is greatest. Then he ؓ looked at his son Abdullah ؓ and said: O my son, what kind of father was I to you? He said: The best of fathers. He said ؓ: I adjure you to carry me until you press my cheek to the ground, so that I die as a slave dies. Abdullah ؓ said: By Allah, that is hard for me, O father. He said: Then he said: Get up and do not argue with me. So he got up and carried him until he pressed his cheek to the ground. Then he said ؓ: O Abdullah, I adjure you by the right of Allah, the Exalted, and the right of Umar, when I die and you bury me, do not wash your head until you sell from the properties of the family of Umar for eighty thousand and place it in the treasury of the Muslims. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf ؓ, who was at his head, said: O Commander of the Faithful, what is the value of these eighty thousand? You have harmed your dependents, or the family of Umar. He said ؓ: Get away from me, O Ibn Awf. Then he looked at Abdullah ؓ and said: O my son, and thirty-two thousand I spent in twelve pilgrimages I performed during my governance and in needs that came to me from messengers arriving from the provinces. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf ؓ said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, rejoice and think well of Allah, the Exalted. There is no one among us of the Muhajirun but has taken the like of what you took from the fay' that Allah, the Exalted, has assigned to us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while pleased with you, and you have with him ﷺ prior merits. He said ؓ: O Ibn Awf, Umar wishes that he had come out of it as he entered it. I wish to meet Allah, the Exalted, and that you do not hold me accountable for little or much. Thumamah: Ali ibn al-Madini and others spoke about him. The narration of the story of Umar ؓ in the two Sahihs does not contain most of what is mentioned here.
