✧ Abu Lu'lu'ah was a slave of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah. He used to make millstones, and al-Mughirah used to take from him four dirhams every day. Abu Lu'lu'ah met Umar ؓ and said: O Commander of the Faithful, al-Mughirah has made my tax heavy; speak to him to lighten it for me. Umar ؓ said to him: Fear Allah, the Exalted, and be good to your master. Umar ؓ intended to meet al-Mughirah and speak to him to lighten it. The slave became angry and said: His justice has encompassed all the people except me. He resolved to kill him. He fashioned a dagger with two heads, sharpened it, and poisoned it. Then he brought it to al-Hurmuzan and said: How do you see this? He said: I see that you will not strike anyone with it except that you kill him. Abu Lu'lu'ah waited for an opportunity and came at the dawn prayer until he stood behind Umar ؓ. When the prayer was about to begin and someone spoke, Umar ؓ used to say: Straighten your rows. He went to say as he used to say, and when he said the takbir, Abu Lu'lu'ah stabbed him in his shoulder and stabbed him in his side. Umar ؓ fell, and he stabbed with his dagger thirteen men; seven of them died and six were wounded. Umar ؓ was carried and taken to his house. The people surged until the sun almost rose. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf ؓ called out: O people, the prayer, the prayer. They rushed to the prayer, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf ؓ stepped forward and led them with the two shortest surahs in the Quran. When he finished the prayer, they went to Umar ؓ. He called for a drink to see the extent of his wound. He was brought nabidh and drank it, and it came out of his wound, and they did not know whether it was nabidh or blood. He ؓ called for milk and drank it, and it came out of his wound. They said: No harm upon you, O Commander of the Faithful. He said ؓ: If killing is harm, then I have been killed. The people began to praise him, and he said: Despite what you say, I wish I had come out of it even, and that the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is secure for me. Ibn Abbas ؓ spoke and said: No, by Allah, you will not come out of it even. And he mentioned the hadith. He said: Umar ؓ used to find rest in the words of Ibn Abbas ؓ, so he said: Repeat. He repeated it to him, and he said ؓ: Despite what you say, if I had the fill of the earth, I would ransom myself with it from the terror of the rising.
